[Complete restoration of supination and flexion strength after surgical treatment of distal biceps tendon rupture by the Boyd-Andersson method]. / Fuld restitution af supinations- og fleksionskraft efter kirurgisk behandling af distal bicepsseneruptur a.m. Boyd-Andersson.

Two patients with rupture of the distal biceps brachii tendon were treated using the Boyd-Andersson two-incision technique. The aim of the method is to restore the anatomy and the important function of the biceps muscle as the strongest supinator of the forearm. In the present investigation, both patients returned to their preinjury activities at 8 and 12 weeks, respectively. At follow-up 20 and 101 months postoperatively they had returned to normal levels of elbow flexion and supination strength measured with a strain-gauge. One patient suffered from a partial radial nerve palsy, which, however, disappeared completely after three months. With the Boyd-Andersson technique it is possible to obtain a good functional result. This is of particular importance, since the lesion is most often seen in middle-aged laborers.

Displaced tibial shaft fractures treated with ASIF compression internal fixation.

Fifty-one tibial shaft fractures treated by ASIF compression osteosynthesis were seen at follow-up at a median time of 46 weeks after injury. Twenty-four were open fractures and the patients received prophylactic antibiotics. The median stay in hospital was 15 days for open fractures and 6 days for closed fractures. There were complications in 26 cases, with deep infection in 9 cases. At present we cannot advocate the use of ASIF compression osteosynthesis for displaced tibial fractures.
