This article presents a study of the excited state relaxation dynamics of N-salicylidene-o-aminophenol (SOAP) in ethanol solution. Femtosecond transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy and theoretical calculations are used in combination to establish the mechanism of the excited state relaxation and type of molecular species involved in the accompanying phototransformations. TA spectra show that upon photoexcitation two SOAP tautomers (E-enol and Z-keto) interconvert by ESIPT. The molecule can subsequently isomerize to the E-keto form of SOAP. An intriguing observation is that the TA spectra of this compound in ethanol show modulations of the signal at the stimulated emission spectral range. It is found that these modulations are due to the coherence of the excited ensemble of molecules whose evolution over time represents a moving wave packet. After Fourier transform of the modulations, two characteristic frequencies are identified. These frequencies refer to the corresponding vibrational modes of the excited state and their nature is elucidated by DFT quantum chemical calculations. The obtained experimental and theoretical data reveal the nature of the vibronic coupling between the ground and excited state and the type of molecular vibrations involved in the molecular dynamics along the potential surface of the first excited state at the initial moment right after excitation. These vibrations characterize the starting point in the excited state dynamics of the molecule toward Z-E isomerization of the keto form of SOAP. This study provides a comprehensive picture of the dynamic processes taking place upon photoexcitation of the compound, which might enable control over the various relaxation channels.

The red-breasted goose Branta ruficollis is a globally threatened species (IUCN Vulnerable) and the only European goose species currently in decline. Working on the wintering grounds on the Black Sea Coast, we address two potential causes of decline of this species for the first time: lead poisoning, and contamination from pesticides. We quantified the densities of spent Pb shot in three wetlands used by the geese in north-east Bulgaria, and analysed the Pb concentration in the faeces of red-breasted geese and the more abundant greater white-fronted geese Anser albifrons, using Al concentration as an indicator of soil ingestion. Pb shot densities in sediments were low, and we found no evidence for Pb shot ingestion in red-breasted geese. On the other hand, we found that the geese were feeding on wheat whose seeds were treated with four fungicides: thiram, tebuconazole, difenoconazole and fludioxonil, and the two first were even detected in geese faecal samples. Using data on the daily food intake, we estimated the exposure levels of the geese to these fungicides, both by measuring the concentrations remaining on seeds and by estimating the amount used to coat the seeds at the time of sowing. We found that the exposure rates estimated during the sowing period for both geese species can exceed the recognized hazardous doses for thiram, and to a lesser extent for tebuconazole, which indicates that some pesticides may be playing a previously overlooked role in the decline of red-breasted geese.

BACKGROUND: Medical practice and patient-doctor relationship will continue improving while technology is integrated in our everyday life. In recent years the term eHealth landmarked a new era with improved health provider's skills and knowledge, and increased patient participation in medical care activities. OBJECTIVE: To show why the design and implementation of a healthcare system needs to follow a specific philosophy dictated by the level of eHealth maturity of a country and its citizens. METHODS: Based on the maturity level, an adaptable framework for implementing an Electronic Health System at national level is derived, guided by the Patient Centered Philosophy as defined and introduced by the EU directives. Implementation prerequisites are analyzed together with guiding principles for identifying the maturity level of an organization or country. RESULTS: Cyprus being a small EU country, it can be used as pilot site for the whole Europe, was chosen for this study and its maturity level analysis is presented. Recommendations that determine general steps needed to prepare the ground for an adequate patient-centered national healthcare system are accompanied. CONCLUSION: The implementation of an integrated Electronic Health Record at National level, as a prerequisite for a patient-centered eHealth environment is evidently demonstrated.
