RESUMO

We report the results of a multi-day diurnal study in which polarimetric and conventional thermal imagery is recorded in the mid- and long-wave IR to identify and compare the respective time periods in which minimum target contrast is achieved. The data shows that the chief factors affecting polarimetric contrast in both wavebands are the amount of thermal emission from the objects in the scene and the abundance of MWIR and LWIR sources in the optical background. In particular, it has been observed that the MWIR polarimetric contrast was positively correlated to the presence of MWIR sources in the optical background, while the LWIR polarimetric contrast was negatively correlated to the presence of LWIR sources in the optical background.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the use of near-infrared spectroscopy as an analytical tool to quantify concentrations of urea, creatinine, glucose, ketone, and protein in urine. DESIGN AND METHODS: FT-IR spectroscopy in conjunction with a polynomial based spectral smoothing method was applied to urine specimens. A partial factorial experimental design was employed to collect spectra using normal and spiked urine samples. RESULTS: Our results show that the spectral signatures of urea, creatinine, glucose, ketone, and protein in the 1350 to 1800 nm and 2050 to 2375 nm range are sufficiently strong and unique for accurate measurements. CONCLUSIONS: The accuracy of near infrared for quantifying concentrations of urea and creatinine is only slightly less than our selected reference methods. Glucose, ketone and protein are sufficiently accurate to be useful as a screening tool for wellness. The method successfully accounts for biologic matrix variation. The advantages of near-infrared analysis are (1) no reagents, (2) ease of sample preparation, (3) speed, and (4) the ability to quantify multiple analytes with one spectra.

RESUMO

An instrument to measure total integrated scattering (TIS) in space was built as part of the Optical Properties Monitor instrument package and flown on the Russian Mir Space Station in a low Earth orbit. TIS at two wavelengths was measured in space at approximately weekly intervals from 29 April to 26 December 1997 and telemetered to Earth during the mission. Of the 20 TIS samples, 13 are described here to illustrate the performance of the TIS instrument. These include ten optical samples and three thermal control samples. Two optical samples and one thermal control sample were severely degraded by atomic oxygen. All samples received a light dusting of particles during the mission and an additional heavier layer after the samples returned to Earth. The initial brassboard instrument and the validation tests of the flight instrument are also described.

RESUMO

Mueller-matrix polarimetry performed in the visible and near IR indicates that an integrating sphere acts as an ideal depolarizer to the 0.5% accuracy of the polarimeter. The integrating sphere emits unpolarized light regardless of the incident polarization state.
