BACKGROUND: In 2019, the EAT-Lancet Commission proposed a healthy dietary pattern that, along with reductions in food waste and improved agricultural practices, could feed the increasing global population sustainably. We developed a Planetary Health Diet Index (PHDI) to quantify adherence to the EAT-Lancet reference diet. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess associations between PHDI and total and cause-specific mortality in 3 prospective cohorts of males and females in the United States. METHODS: We followed 66,692 females from the Nurses' Health Study (1986-2019), 92,438 females from the Nurses' Health Study II (1989-2019), and 47,274 males from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (1986-2018) who were free of cancer, diabetes, and major cardiovascular diseases at baseline. The PHDI was calculated every 4 y using a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. Hazard ratios (HRs) were calculated using multivariable proportional-hazards models. RESULTS: During follow-up, we documented 31,330 deaths among females and 23,206 among males. When comparing the highest with the lowest quintile of PHDI, the pooled multivariable-adjusted HRs were 0.77 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.75, 0.80] for all-cause mortality (P-trend < 0.0001). The PHDI was associated with lower risk of deaths from cardiovascular diseases (HR: 0.86; 95% CI: 0.81, 0.91), cancer (HR: 0.90; 95% CI: 0.85, 0.95), respiratory diseases (HR: 0.53; 95% CI: 0.48, 0.59), and neurodegenerative diseases (HR: 0.72; 95% CI: 0.67, 0.78). In females, but not males, the PHDI was also significantly associated with a lower risk of deaths from infectious diseases (HR: 0.62; 95% CI: 0.51, 0.76). PHDI scores were also associated inversely with greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts. CONCLUSIONS: In 3 large United States-based prospective cohorts of males and females with up to 34 y of follow-up, a higher PHDI was associated with lower risk of total and cause-specific mortality and environment impacts.

PURPOSE: We aimed to assess knowledge, attitudes, and perceived barriers among health care professionals (HCPs), policymakers, and regulators in Vietnam related to opioid therapy for cancer pain. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in Vietnam from June to August 2022. Participants completed a questionnaire on their demographic characteristics, knowledge and attitudes toward opioid therapy, and barriers to accessing opioids for cancer pain. RESULTS: Two hundred seven HCPs and 15 policymakers/regulators completed the questionnaire. Poor knowledge about opioids in cancer pain was found in 63.3% of HCPs and 80.0% of policymakers/regulators. Poor knowledge was associated with a lack of training in cancer pain management or palliative care (PC; prevalence ratio [PR], 1.14 [95% CI, 1.04 to 1.24]). Negative attitudes toward opioid therapy in cancer pain were held by 64.7% of HCPs and 80.0% of policymakers/regulators. Negative attitudes were associated with the unavailability of oral morphine in the workplace (PR, 1.10 [95% CI, 1.01 to 1.20]). The most common major barriers reported were the absence of national policy on pain management and PC (34.7%), inadequate training in opioid use for cancer pain (33.8%), lockdown of health facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic (32.4%), limited opioid availability in local health facilities (32.4%), and excessively restrictive regulation of opioid dispensing in pharmacies (32.4%). CONCLUSION: This study found a knowledge deficit and negative attitudes toward opioid therapy for cancer pain among HCPs and policymakers/regulators. Improving education and training in opioid therapy is essential. Recognizing major barriers can guide strategies to enhance safe opioid accessibility for cancer pain management in Vietnam.

Integrated safety sensors for personal protection equipment increasingly attract research activities as there is a high need for workers in delicate situations to be physically monitored in order to avoid accidents. In this work, we present a simple approach to generate thin, homogeneous polypyrrole (PPy) layers on flexible textile polyamide fabrics. PPy layers of 0.5-1 µm were deposited on the fabric, which thus kept its flexibility. The conductive layers are multifunctional and can act as temperature and gas sensors for the detection of corrosive gases such as HCl and NH3. Using three examples of life-threatening environments, we were able to monitor temperature, atmospheric NH3 and HCl within critical ranges, i.e., 100 to 400 ppm for ammonia and 20 to 100 ppm for HCl. In the presence of HCl, a decrease in resistance was observed, while gaseous NH3 led to an increase in resistance. The sensor signal thus allows for distinguishing between these two gases and indicating critical concentrations. The simple and cheap manufacturing of such PPy sensors is of substantial interest for the future design of multifunction functional sensors in protective clothing.

The comfort of walking depends heavily on the shoes used. Consequently, the midsole of shoes is designed in such a way that it can dampen force peaks during walking. This significantly increases the overall wellness during walking. Therefore, the midsole usually consists of rubber-like polymers, such as polyurethane and ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer. Furthermore, the manufacturing process of these polymers results in a foam-like structure. This further enhances the damping behavior of the material. Nevertheless, it would be desirable to find a cheap and sustainable method to enhance the damping behavior of the shoe midsole. The purpose of this work is to see if hemp fibers, which are part of the polymer matrix material, could improve the stiffness without losing the damping behavior. The mechanical properties of such prepared fiber-reinforced composites were characterized by quasi-static tensile testing and dynamic mechanical analysis. The mechanical properties were examined in relation to the fiber type, weight fraction, and type of polyurethane used. Furthermore, the investigation of the embedding of these fibers in the polymer matrix was conducted through the utilization of optical and electron microscopy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Metabolic syndrome (MtS) is associated with increased risk of many health disorders, especially cardiovascular diseases. In Vietnam, study examining MtS is meager and especially lacking for the workforce. We estimated the prevalence of MtS and its associated factors among Vietnamese employees. METHODS AND RESULTS: We analyzed secondary data of annual health check of employees of 300 Vietnamese companies from the Vinmec Healthcare System. We used three definitions for MtS: International Diabetes Federation (IDF), National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III), and NCEP ATP III-Asia. Of 57,997 participants evaluated, 48.5 % were males and 66.2 % were younger than 40 years old. The unadjusted MtS prevalence was 8.4 % (IDF), 10.2 % (NCEP ATP III), and 16.0 % (NCEP ATP III-Asia). The age-sex adjusted prevalence of MtS (NCEP ATP III-Asia) was 21.8 % (95 % confidence interval (CI): 21.4 %, 22.2 %). MtS prevalence increased with age, reached 49.6 % for age ≥60. The aging related increase was more remarkable in females than males (prevalence ratio (PR) (95 % CI) for age ≥60 comparing to age <30 years old in males vs. females was 4.0 (3.6, 4.3) vs. 20.1 (17.7, 22.9)). High blood triglyceride (83.4 %) and abdominal obesity (74.5 %) were the predominant contributors to MtS. CONCLUSION: In this relatively young Vietnamese working population, 16 % had MtS with high triglyceride and abdominal obesity being the predominant contributors. These findings emphasize the need for developing effective high triglyceride and abdominal obesity prevention and control programs to curb the emerging epidemic of metabolic disorders in the workforce.

Polypropylene-based multiphase compositions with a disperse elastomer phase provide superior impact strength. Making this property indifferent to processing steps requires stabilization of the morphology of these materials. Various approaches have been tested over time, each of which shows limitations in terms of performance or applicability. Using polyethylene (PE) homo- and copolymers capable of silane-based crosslinking as modifiers was explored in the present study, which allows decoupling of the mixing and crosslinking processes. Commercial silane-copolymerized low-density PE (LD-PEX) from a high-pressure process and silane-grafted high-density PE (HD-PEX) were studied as impact modifiers for different types of PP copolymers, including non-modified reference PE grades, LDPE and HDPE. Blends based on ethylene-propylene random copolymers (PPR) and based on impact- (PPI) and random-impact (PPRI) copolymers show improvements of the stiffness-impact balance; however, to different degrees. While the absolute softest and most ductile compositions are achieved with the already soft PPRI copolymer base, the strongest relative effects are found for the PPR based blends. Modifiers with lower density are clearly superior in the toughening effect, with the LD-PEX including acrylate as second comonomer sticking out due to its glass transition around -40 °C. The impact strength improvement found in most compositions (except at very high content) results, however, not from the expected phase stabilization. For comparable systems, particle sizes are normally higher with crosslinking, probably because the process already starts during mixing. Thermoplastic processability could be retained in all cases, but the drop in melt flow rate limits the practical applicability of such systems.

The work addresses the use of bio-based and -degradable materials for the production of a moist, adaptive and anti-microbial wound dressing. The dressing is targeted to exhibit a pH-dependent active agent release. Xanthan hydrogel structures are coated on cellulose fabrics via stencil printing and subsequently cross-linked using glyoxal. By alteration of the cross-linker content from 1 to 6% by mass, the hydrogel elasticity can be tuned within a range of 2-16 kPa storage modulus. Increasing initial glyoxal concentrations also result in higher amounts of glyoxal release. Glyoxal, an anti-microbial agent with approval in veterinary medicine, is mostly released upon wound application supporting infection management. As wound simulation, normal saline, as pH 5 and pH 8 buffer solutions, were used. The release profile and magnitude of approx. 65%-90% glyoxal is pH-dependent. Increased release rates of glyoxal are present in pH 8 fluids, which mostly base on faster hydrogel swelling. Higher total glyoxal release is present in pH 5 fluid and normal saline after 3 days. Accordingly, a pH-dependent release profile was encountered. As glyoxal attacks any cell unselectively, it is expected to be effective against antibiotic resistant bacteria. By stencil printing the dressing size can be adjusted to minimize healthy glyoxal tissue exposure.

Disperse dyes are an important group of colorants for dyeing polyester fibers. Approximately 30.000 tons of disperse dyes are released into the waste water annually from spent dyebaths. Therefore, methods for decolorizing such dyes are of general interest. The reductive after-treatment of disperse dyes using reducing agents, such as Na2S2O4, is a widely used process to improve rub fastness through dye reduction. Electrochemical dye reduction could be an alternative process for reductive dye treatment. In this work C.I. Disperse Orange 62 was used as a representative dye to study the direct cathodic reduction of a disperse dye with cyclic voltammetry. As anticipated for dispersed organic matter, relatively low current densities were observed, which strongly depend on the state of dispersion of the dye. The current density was increased by using dispersions prepared through dye precipitation from DMF solution and by the use of N-cetyl-N,N,N,-trimethyl-ammonium bromide as a cationic surfactant. The results demonstrate the successful cathodic reduction of a dispersed organic dye; however, the low solubility of the reaction products in the aqueous electrolyte hinders an efficient cathodic dye reduction.

Post-transplantation tracking of pancreatic islets is a prerequisite for advancing cell therapy to treat type 1 diabetes. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has emerged as a safe and non-invasive technique for visualizing cells in clinical applications. In this study, we proposed a novel MRI contrast agent formulation by encapsulating iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) in poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) particles functionalized with a tissue adhesive polydopamine (PD) layer (IONP-PLGA-PD MS). Intriguingly, our particles facilitated efficient and robust labeling through a one-step process, allowing for the incorporation of a substantial amount of IONPs without detrimental impacts on the viability and functionality of pancreatic islets. The MRI signals emanating from islets labeled using our particles were found to be stable over 30 days in vitro and 60 days when transplanted under kidney capsules of diabetic mice. These results suggest that our approach provides a potential platform for monitoring the fate of pancreatic islets after transplantation.

Cultivated peatlands are important for grass production in Northern Europe, but the potential impact of nutrients leaching to surface waters is a major concern. Due to a lack of data on nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and organic carbon leaching, a monitoring programme was established at Ruukki (Siikajoki, Finland), an agricultural, subsurface drained peat site with a peat thickness of 20-80 cm. Concentrations and loading of N, P, and total organic carbon (TOC) were monitored, along with other water quality parameters for the field discharge, in 2018-2021. We observed N leaching from subsurface discharge to be 25 kg N ha-1 year-1 (range 11-40 kg N ha-1 year-1, 74 % as nitrate NO3-N). The least N leaching was recorded from plots of thinner peat topsoil and those with grass cover, while the majority of N leaching originated from thicker peat plots (bare or under barley) in spring. Leaching of N strongly decreased during periods of thick grass cover. Significant N leaching also occurred during the mild winter of 2019-2020, characterized by alternating freeze and thaw periods. Annual P loading from subsurface drainage was 0.30 kg P ha-1 (0.20-0.43 kg P ha-1), low compared to that of average cultivated soils in Finland. It was estimated that 13 % of the total N leaching and 50 % of the total P leaching occurred in surface runoff. Leaching of TOC was significant at 87 kg ha-1 year-1 (31-137 kg ha-1 year-1). Leaching of dissolved P and TOC increased with peat thickness. Abundant loading of sulfur and acidity indicates the oxidation of sulfidic material in the subsoil. Leaching concentrations correlated with discharge quantity, suggesting that mobilization processes during the dry periods resulted in leaching during high discharge periods. The results show the importance of avoiding bare peat soil for NO3-N leaching reduction, even during wintertime in cultivated peatlands.

Background: The abdominal obesity trends and prevalence are important contributing factors to significant rise of many noncommunicable diseases in Vietnam but have not been well-documented in the literature. This study aimed to describe the prevalence and trends of obesity and abdominal obesity in Vietnam from 2009 to 2015 and evaluate how different definitions of obesity and abdominal obesity are associated with metabolic-related conditions. Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis based on the Vietnam STEPS (STEPwise approach to Surveillance) cross-sectional Survey 2009 and 2015. Obesity and abdominal obesity were defined using the body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-hip ratio (WHR) cut-offs from the World Health Organization (WHO) and International Diabetes Federation (IDF). Findings: Depending on the specific cut-offs, from 2009 to 2015, obesity prevalence increased from 0.8%-10% to 1.7%-16.4% in women and from 0.8%-10.3% to 1.7%-15% in men; abdominal obesity prevalence increased from 3%-31.3% to 8%-41.7% in women and from 0.3%-19.3% to 0.4%-25% in men. Abdominal obesity using WC-IDF and WHR-WHO definitions had noticeably higher sensitivity and lower specificity for metabolic-related conditions compared to the other four criteria. All anthropometric measurements were statistically correlated with biomarkers/blood pressure in 2009 and 2015 except for fasting glucose. Only WC-IDF and WHR-WHO definitions showed consistent association with all reported metabolic-related conditions regardless of sex and survey years. Interpretation: The prevalence of obesity and abdominal obesity in Vietnam is increasing rapidly, especially abdominal obesity in women regardless of the criteria used. More studies are needed to investigate how using different diagnostic criteria for obesity and abdominal obesity could better identify metabolic-related conditions. C.I. Sulphur Black 1 is among the most important dyes for cellulose textiles, as this dye offers a maximum colour depth at reasonable costs. In its final form the dye is present as solid pigment, thus limited wet rub fastness can be an issue. Controlled re-oxidation of the leuco form into the oxidised dye pigment and intensive washing and soaping are measures to achieve acceptable wet rub fastness. In this study pad-steam dyeing with C.I. Sulphur Black 1 was used to investigate the effects of an intensified washing process with use of ultrasonification on rub fastness. Ultrasound was applied following to steam fixation of the dye. Introduction of ultrasound into the following process steps was investigated: water seal, warm rinse, oxidation, soaping, cold rinse. Best results in rub fastness were obtained by combination of soaping and ultrasound processing. The high shear rate near to the fibre surface led to a reduction of the thickness of the stagnant diffusion layer and more intense removal of loosely bound dispersed dye. As a result of the treatment an improvement in wet rub fastness of the dyeings was achieved. Duration of 60 - 120 s was found sufficient to remove the major part of surface bound pigments which allows an integration into continuous pad-steam dyeing processing. The results demonstrate that ultrasound washing may lead to improved rub fastness of other dyeings where a pigment is the final form of the dye. The method thus could be extended to vat dyes including indigo, or naphthol dyes.

Identifying modifiable risk factors that contribute to cancer is essential in setting up preventive strategies. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the number and proportion of cancer cases and deaths attributable to five behavior-related risk factors-tobacco smoking, second-hand smoking, alcohol consumption, high body mass index and insufficient physical activity in Vietnam in 2020. Population attributable fractions were calculated for relationships of risk factors and cancer types based on sufficient evidence according to IARC or strong evidence according to WCRF/AICR. Relative risks were retrieved from meta-analyses where possible. Prevalence of risk factors was obtained from the most current available nationally representative population surveys in Vietnam. Cancer cases and deaths were obtained from GLOBOCAN 2020. An estimated 40.5% of all cancer cases in men (39 924 cases) and 7.8% in women (6542 cases) were attributable to these risk factors. The proportions of cancer deaths attributable to these risk factors were 44.0% in men (32 807 cases) and 8.9% in women (4235 cases). Tobacco smoking was the leading cause of cancer cases and deaths in men, followed by alcohol consumption and high BMI. In women, high BMI accounted for the highest proportion of cancer cases and second-hand smoking accounted for the highest proportion of cancer deaths. Lung and upper aerodigestive tract cancer cases and deaths could have been reduced at least by half if these risk factors had been eliminated. To reduce cancer incidence and mortality, preventive actions focusing on tobacco control are likely to have the most significant impact, especially in men.

Conductive textiles play an important role in recent electronics development; however, one of the major challenges remains their machine-washing durability. For the investigation of the basic wash ageing mechanisms, we used copper-plated polyamide 66 and cellulose fabrics and developed a wet and dry operable flex tester with online resistance recording. The evaluation was supported by abrasion tests, cyclic elongation tests and tribological investigation of dry and wet textile-textile friction. It was found that the contribution of mechanical and chemical ageing to wash ageing strongly depends on the substrate material. A bad adhesion of copper on polyamide 66 leads to early fatigue while better stability of the copper on cellulose leads to a stronger resistance against ageing. For both substrates, the delamination of the copper layer was the root cause of the fatigue, which is facilitated by the washing solution. Finally, a cumulative fatigue model was developed and the determination of the end of lifetime by the intended use is discussed.

In this report, red-emitting alumina nanophosphors doped with Mn4+ and Mg2+ (Al2O3:Mn4+, Mg2+) are synthesized by a hydrothermal method using a Pluronic surfactant. The prepared samples are ceramic-sintered at various temperatures. X-ray diffraction shows that Al2O3:Mn4+, Mg2+ annealed at 500 °C exhibits a cubic γ-Al2O3 phase with the space group Fd3m-227. The tetragonal δ-Al2O3 and rhombohedral α-Al2O3 phase is obtained at 1000 and 1300 °C, respectively. Cube-like nanoparticles in a size of ∼40 nm are observed for the alumina heated at 500-1000 °C. The size and red-emitting intensity of the phosphors remarkably increased with annealed temperature ∼1300 °C. Emission spectra of the phosphors show strong peaks at 678 and 692 nm due to 2 E g → 4 A 2 transitions of the Mn4+ ion, under a light excitation of 460 nm. A strong zero-phonon line (ZPL) emission is observed in the luminescence spectra of δ-Al2O3:Mn4+, Mg2+ at 298 K, whereas a weak one is observed in those of α- and γ-Al2O3:Mn4+, Mg2+. The alumina phosphors exhibited an excellent waterproof ability during 60 days in water and good thermal stability in the range of 77-573 K. A warm-white light-emitting diode (WLED) fabricated using In x Ga1-x N nanowire chips with Al2O3:Mn4+, Mg2+ red-emitting nanophosphors presents a high color rendering index of ∼95.1 and a low correlated color temperature of ∼4998 K. Moreover, the current-voltage characteristic of the nanowire LEDs could be improved using Al2O3:Mn4+, Mg2+ nanophosphors which is attributed to the increased heat dissipation in the nanowire LEDs.

AIM: The study aimed to determine potential risk factors associated with Premenstrual Syndrome and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. METHODS: Three hundred two female student participants who were 18-45 years old completed a questionnaire including demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, and a Vietnamese Premenstrual Syndrome Screening Tool. We then followed up participants during at least two menstrual cycles using the Daily Record of Severity of Problems. The Premenstrual Syndrome and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder diagnosis was established using The Carolina Premenstrual Assessment Scoring System, based on the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. RESULTS: According to the Carolina Premenstrual Assessment Scoring System, 35 out of 302 students (11.6%; 95%CI: 8.2-15.7%) met the diagnosis of PMS (31 students) or PMDD (4 students). We found that age at menarche (PR = 0.77, 95%CI: 0.63-0.96), having negative Rh blood type (PR = 4.43, 95%CI: 1.95 to 10.08), being moderately depressed or higher (PR = 2.81, 95%CI: 1.24 to 6.36), and consuming caffeine more than three times per week were statistically associated with having Premenstrual Syndrome or Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder after adjusting for other variables. CONCLUSION: The prominent risk factors for Premenstrual Syndrome and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder were negative Rhesus blood type, menarche age, caffeine consumption, and self-reported depression.

Penicillium oxalicum has been reported as a multienzyme-producing fungus and is widely used in industry due to great potential for cellulase release. Until now, there are only 10 available genome assemblies of P. oxalicum species deposited in the GenBank database. In this study, the genome of the I1R1 strain isolated from the root of Ixora chinensis was completely sequenced by Pacbio Sequel sequencing technology, assembled into 8 chromosomes with the genome size of 30.8 Mb, as well as a mitogenome of 26 kb. The structural and functional analyses of the I1R1 genome revealed gene model annotations encoding an enzyme set involved in significant metabolic processes, along with cytochrome P450s and secondary metabolite biosynthesis. The comparative analysis of the P. oxalicum species based on orthology and gene family duplications indicated their large and closed pan-genome of 9,500 orthologous groups. This is valuable data for future phylogenetic and population genomics studies.

Circularity of cellulose-based pre- and post-consumer wastes requires an integrated approach which has to consider the characteristics of the fibre polymer and the presence of dyes and additives from textile chemical processing as well. Fibre-to-fibre recycling is a condition to avoid downcycling of recycled material. For cellulose fibres regeneration via production of regenerated cellulose fibres is the most promising approach. Textile wastes contain dyes and additives, thus a recycling technique has to be robust enough to process such material. In an ideal case the reuse of colorants can be achieved as well. At present nearly 80% of the regenerated cellulose fibre production utilises the viscose process, therefore this technique was chosen to investigate the recycling of dyed material including the reuse of the colorant. In this work, for the first time, a compilation of all required process steps to a complete circular concept is presented and discussed as a model. Indigo-dyed viscose fibres were used as a model to study cellulose recycling via production of regenerated cellulose fibres to avoid downcycling. Indigo was found compatible to the alkalisation and xanthogenation steps in the viscose process and blue coloured cellulose regenerates were recovered from indigo-dyed cellulose. A supplemental addition of reduced indigo to the cellulose solution was also found feasible to adjust colour depth in the regenerated cellulose to the level required for use as warp material in denim production. By combination of fibre recycling and indigo dyeing the conventional yarn dyeing in denim production can be omitted. Model calculations for the savings in water and chemical consumption demonstrate the potential of the process. The proportion of the substitution will depend on the collection rate of denim wastes and on the efficiency of the fibre regeneration process. Estimates indicate that a substitution of more than 70% of the cotton fibres by regenerated cellulose fibres could be achieved when 80% of the pre- and post-consumer denim wastes are collected. Therefore, the introduction of fibre recycling via regenerated cellulose fibres will also make a substantial impact on the cotton consumption for jeans production.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and governments' response lead to dramatical change in quality of life worldwide. However, the extent of this change in Vietnamese medical and nursing students has not been documented. OBJECTIVES: The study aims to describe the quality of life and changes in quality of life of medical and nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic and examine the association of quality of life and changes in quality of life with fear of COVID-19 and other socio-economic and demographic factors. METHODS: The study was a cross-sectional study on all students of Hanoi Medical University from 3 majors: General Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Nursing (3672 invited students); from 7th to 29th of April 2020; using an online questionnaire that included demographic and academic information, the Vietnamese version of the SF-36 Quality of Life questionnaire and the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S). Linear and modified Poisson regression was used to examine the association between quality of life, changes in quality of life and other factors. RESULTS: The number of participants was 1583 (response rate 43%). Among 8 dimensions of the SF-36 (ranged 0-100), Vitality had the lowest score with a median score of 46. The median physical composite score (PCS) of the sample was 40.6 (IQR:20.8-53.2), 33.5% of the sample had an above-population average PCS score. The median mental composite score (MCS) of the sample was 20.3 (IQR:3.8-31.7), and 98.2% had an MCS score below average. 9.9% (95%CI:8.5%-11.4%) of the population reported a significant negative change in the quality of life. Fear of COVID-19 was not associated with significant changes in quality of life, nor MCS while having some association with PCS (Coef:-5.39;95%CI:-3to-7.8). Perceived reduction in quality of life was also associated with: being on clinical rotation COVID-19 (PR:1.5;95%CI:1.05-2.2), difficulties affording health services (PR:1.4;95%CI:1.02-1.95), obesity (PR:2.38;95%CI:1.08-5.25) and chronic disease (PR:1.92;95%CI:1.23-3), typical symptoms (PR:1.85; 95%CI:1.23-2.78) and atypical symptoms of COVID-19 (PR:2.32;95%CI:1.41-3.81). CONCLUSION: The majority of medical and nursing students had below average quality of life, with lower vitality and mental composite health score in the settings of COVID-19. Perceived decrease in quality of life was associated with clinical rotation, difficulties affording healthcare services and was not associated with Fear of COVID-19.

A paper-based chemiresistive sensor consisting of a single-walled carbon nanotubes network with electrodeposited gold nanoparticles (AuNPs-SWCNTs) was developed for the sensitive detection of As(III). A new sensing strategy was also proposed combined with a paper-based device for As(III) chemiresistive detection based on the electrochemical doping of As(0) on the AuNPs-SWCNTs channel. The proposed paper-based chemiresistive sensor was manufactured by wax printing and vacuum deposition using a water-based SWCNTs ink. The sensor sensitivity was enhanced by optimizing the volume of SWCNTs ink used in the formation of the sensing network in the paper and the sweep segment of cyclic voltammetry used for the electrochemical deposition of AuNPs. Additionally, the mechanism of the sensing strategy based on the electrochemical n-doping of As(0) to the AuNPs-SWCNTs sensing channel was investigated using a liquid-ion gated FET system. The As(III) concentration detected by the as-fabricated chemiresistive sensor is as low as 1.35 × 10-5 µM which is even lower than the maximum permissible concentration in drinking water defined by the WHO. In this paper, we provide a simple strategy for developing paper-based chemiresistive sensors with unique properties for practical As(III) determination.
