Primary care for women. Management of common problems of the head and neck.

As the companion article to Part I of the Journal of Nurse-Midwifery (JNM) series on "Primary Care for Women: Comprehensive Assessment of the Head and Neck", the pertinent primary care management steps involved in the prevention and treatment of problems of the head and neck in women are addressed. Emphasis is placed on the diagnosis and management of the most common head and neck illnesses; less common diagnoses that may be acute, seasonal, and/or life-threatening are also presented. Collaborative roles in the management of women with problems of the head and neck are discussed, and emphasis is placed on the importance of both preventive strategies and coordination of referrals.

Primary care for women. Comprehensive dermatologic assessment.

This article identifies the components necessary for comprehensive dermatologic assessment, including the pertinent anatomy and physiology, appropriate health history, and physical examination strategies. An overview of common dermatologic conditions in women is presented, and the identification of and action needed for life-threatening dermatologic conditions are reviewed. This article is the first of two articles on primary care for women with dermatological complaints; the subsequent article will address primary care management of common dermatologic conditions.

Primary care for women. Comprehensive assessment of the head and neck.

This article reviews the pertinent anatomy of each body system involved in the assessment of the head and neck (including the eyes, ears, nose, and throat) and describes the basic elements of the comprehensive health assessment. Frequently encountered chief complaints are discussed. Aspects of the health assessment that will assist the primary care provider in making a differential diagnosis and determining the need for referral are presented. This article is the first of two articles on this topic; the subsequent article will address primary care management of common conditions of the head and neck.

Endocytosis of erythrocytes in vivo and particulate substances in vitro by feline neoplastic mast cells.

Clinical evidence for the phagocytic capability of neoplastic feline mast cells was provided by recognition of endocytosed erythrocytes in seven of 12 cytological smears of mast cell neoplasms, particularly in those cells collected from splenic tumors. The capability of these neoplastic mast cells to endocytose particulate substances was also studied in vitro. Evidence is presented that under cultural conditions, feline neoplastic mast cells are capable of endocytosing a variety of substances including polystyrene latex microspheres, zymosan particles, horse spleen ferritin, salmon sperm nuclei, horseradish peroxidase, and carbon particles.
