RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the effectiveness of a modified hybrid brainstorming (MHB) program against conventional brainstorming (CB) to achieve idea generation during innovation initiatives in nursing. METHOD: Pretest and posttest outcomes comparing the two brainstorming methods were tested during a training exercise (N = 56). The MHB group (n = 29) was trained to apply CB for problem identification and MHB for idea generation. The CB group (n = 27) was trained to apply only CB. RESULTS: The MHB method significantly enhanced idea fluency, flexibility, and originality from pretest to posttest (p < .05) and increased idea fluency and originality to a greater extent than the CB method. CONCLUSION: The MHB learning program can enhance nurses' innovative idea generation by promoting idea fluency and originality. [J Contin Educ Nurs. 2021;52(2):72-78.].

RESUMO

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore and describe lived experience of blood glucose self-monitoring among pregnant Thai women with gestational diabetes mellitus. BACKGROUND: Self-monitoring of blood glucose is an essential practice among pregnant women with diabetes to prevent complications in pregnancy and the newborn infant. DESIGN: Phenomenological research was employed to understand lived experiences in glycemic control. METHODS: Thirty participants were approached and interviewed using a semistructured interview guides. Qualitative data were analysed following Colaizzi's method. RESULTS: The findings revealed three themes: being worried about diabetes and blood testing, trying to control it and being patient for the child. Their worry comprised three dimensions: (1) wondering about the impacts of diabetes on the child, (2) concern about maternal health and (3) being worried about doing blood test. Trying to control diabetes was composed of three dimensions: (1) learning to test blood glucose, (2) being afraid of elevated blood sugar and (3) being aware of what to eat. Being patient for the child was composed of three dimensions: (1) overcoming food desires, (2) tolerating the fingerprick pain and (3) satisfaction with the outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Women with gestational diabetes experienced being worried and afraid regarding blood glucose self-monitoring; however, they could overcome and tolerate this with some difficulties. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: These findings can be used to guide nursing practice in assessment of perception and response towards blood glucose self-monitoring in order to improve achievement of a good glycaemic control among pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus.

RESUMO

AIM: This randomized controlled trial was carried out to investigate the effect of mindfulness eating and yoga exercise on blood sugar levels among pregnant Thai women with GDM. BACKGROUND: Interventions promoting achievement of good glycemic control result in desired pregnancy outcomes. Little is known about the health benefits of mindfulness eating and yoga exercise on blood sugar levels among pregnant with GDM. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was carried out. Main outcome measures were capillary fasting plasma glucose, 2-h postprandial blood glucose, and hemoglobin A1c. RESULTS: The intervention group showed significantly reduced fasting plasma glucose, 2-h postprandial blood glucose, and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in the intervention group (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Mindfulness eating and yoga exercise had health benefits on glycemic control in pregnant women with GDM. It should be recommended in clinical and community health services.

RESUMO

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To determine the association between hypoglycaemia among neonates born to mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus and their postpartum prediabetes. BACKGROUND: Infants born to mothers with diabetes who experienced hyperglycaemia are more likely to develop hypoglycaemia. DESIGN: A prospective-descriptive research was conducted in three tertiary hospitals in southern Thailand. METHODS: One hundred and fifty matched pairs of mothers and their newborns were included in the study. Data were analysed using descriptive statistic, odds ratio, Spearman's rho correlation and binary logistic regression. RESULTS: The incidence of neonatal hypoglycaemia was 42·37% and odds ratio was 0·30. The findings showed the significant association between neonatal hypoglycaemia and postpartum blood sugar levels of women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus. CONCLUSIONS: Neonatal hypoglycaemia was associated with maternal hyperglycaemia and prediabetes. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Neonatal hypoglycaemia might be used to predict prediabetes of postpartum women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus.

RESUMO

Women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus are at risk of developing prediabetes. Using a cross-sectional analytic design, the factors related to prediabetes among Thai women (n = 210) with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus were investigated. The main outcomes measured were two-hour plasma glucose after taking a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test at a six week postpartum visit. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation. The study showed that the incidence of prediabetes among postpartum Thai women was 26.67%. Factors associated with prediabetes were: (i) being over 35 years of age; (ii) three or more pregnancies; (iii) recurrent gestational diabetes mellitus; (iv) high plasma glucose before taking a 100 g glucose tolerance test and high postprandial plasma glucose during pregnancy; and (v) being overweight or obese at six weeks' postpartum. The results showed that nursing interventions need to be implemented to reduce plasma glucose and body mass index in order to prevent or reverse prediabetes.

RESUMO

Labor pain is often severe, and analgesic medication may not be indicated. In this randomized controlled trial we examined the effects of music on sensation and distress of pain in Thai primiparous women during the active phase of labor. The gate control theory of pain was the theoretical framework for this study. Randomization with a computerized minimization program was used to assign women to a music group (n = 55) or a control group (n = 55). Women in the intervention group listened to soft music without lyrics for 3 hours starting early in the active phase of labor. Dual visual analog scales were used to measure sensation and distress of pain before starting the study and at three hourly posttests. While controlling for pretest scores, one-way repeated measures analysis of covariance indicated that those in the music group had significantly less sensation and distress of pain than did the control group (F (1, 107) = 18.69, p <.001, effect size =.15, and F (1, 107) = 14.87, p <.001, effect size =.12), respectively. Sensation and distress significantly increased across the 3 hours in both groups (p <.001), except for distress in the music group during the first hour. Distress was significantly lower than sensation in both groups (p <.05). In this controlled study, music--a mild to moderate strength intervention--consistently provided significant relief of severe pain across 3 hours of labor and delayed the increase of affective pain for 1 hour. Nurses can provide soft music to laboring women for greater pain relief during the active phase when contractions are strong and women suffer.
