RESUMO

The epidemiological analysis of morbidity in meningococcal infection in the USSR in the period of 1969-1987 showed that the second rise of the morbidity level occurred in 1984 and was followed by its decrease in most of the regions of the USSR. This study also revealed that the characteristic feature of the second rise of morbidity in meningococcal infection was a considerable involvement of young children (aged up to 3 years), as well as the increased etiological role of group B meningococci in cases of meningococcal infection and the circulation of these microorganisms among the population. Besides, the preservation of the etiological importance of group A meningococci in many regions of the USSR, especially among adults, was noted. In this connection, the use of Soviet group A meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine on epidemiological indications was considered to be epidemiologically substantiated.

RESUMO

The diagnostic characteristics of 8 nutrient media most frequently employed at practical bacteriologic laboratories for the isolation of C. diphtheriae have been under study. Clauberg-2 medium and blood-tellurite agar have been found the most suitable for the diagnostic studies. Addition of extra ingredients to the standard recipe deteriorates the diagnostic potentialities of the media. Tinsdal's medium is characterized by the lowest diagnostic efficacy. The schemes of using these media are presented, with due consideration for their diagnostic potentialities.

RESUMO

Observations on the stratum immune to diphtheria among the population, carried out over a period of many years and involving more than 37,000 people, have shown its gradual decrease in all adult age groups. In recent years the number of adults susceptible to diphtheria exceeded the number of susceptible children by 10.6%, and in some age groups by 18.5-21.8%, which makes for the total increase of diphtheria morbidity in recent years owing to its rise among adults. Regular revaccination of the adult population against diphtheria, made simultaneously with that against tetanus, is recommended.

RESUMO

The work deals with the prospects of scientific research in the prophylaxis of diphtheria. The authors consider the necessity of creating the complex goal-oriented program of scientific research, such program being the basis of forward planning.

RESUMO

Vaccinal prophylaxis against poliomyelitis , carried out regularly in the USSR for many years, has erected a reliable barrier to the epidemic manifestation of this disease in large areas of the USSR over the period of almost 25 years (the term of observation) and introduced new features into its epidemiology: the sluggish course of the epidemic process, a decrease in the relative morbidity rate in cities, a lower morbidity rate among children attending preschool institutions, the absence of the family foci of poliomyelitis, more favorable outcome oft the disease.

RESUMO

The results of testing the blood sera of children and adults for the presence of antibodies to poliomyelitis have shown the low level of immunity to this infection. The authors believe that the main reasons of the tendency towards the decrease in immunity to poliomyelitis, observed in recent years, are the drawbacks of the vaccinal prevention of this infection and the absence of a differentiated approach to the choice of immunization methods under concrete conditions. Mass immunization against poliomyelitis is recommended, especially in the southern and south-eastern regions of the U.S.S.R.

RESUMO

A comparative analysis of the antihaemagglutinating, virus-neutralizing and complement-fixing activities of 19 S, 7 S, 4S and 1.5 S fractions of blood sera from goats of different ages pastured in a tick-borne encephalitis focus was carried out. Changes in the immunological activity of different fractions in relation to the age of the animals are discussed.
