RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Observational instruments are preferred for assessment of cultural competence. The aim of the current study is to identify observational instruments to assess cultural competence in healthcare providers and dieticians specifically and assess their psychometric properties. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in Cinahl, Cochrane, EMBASE, PsycInfo, Pubmed, and Web of Science using search terms related to cultural competency and measurement properties. Methodological quality of the selected studies of observational cultural competence instruments in dieticians, other healthcare professionals and psychological counsellors and the measurement properties of instruments were assessed using the COSMIN checklist. RESULTS: From 11,913 articles, six articles on five instruments were selected. Instruments were targeted at health professionals and counsellors only, and designed for face-to-face communication (n = 4) or verbal responses to videotaped simulated interactions (n = 1). The instruments' content varied largely, with main focus on attitude, and little on knowledge and skills. The measurement properties were suboptimal. CONCLUSION: No observational instrument are available to evaluate cultural competence of dieticians. Studies on psychometric properties of instruments targeted at other health professionals lack methodological rigour. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Future work should focus on developing an instrument that encompasses both 'general' cultural competences necessary for all healthcare professionals and dietetic specific competences.

Baitchain is a novel molluscicide system that consists of metaldehyde pellets arranged on a cord and is designed to be tied around the base of tree trunks and act as a physical and chemical control method for molluscs. In this study, Baitchain is tested in a South African apple orchard and compared with traditional metaldehyde pellets (Sluggit) applied to the soil surface to determine the efficacy of the products against the brown garden snail, Cornu aspersum (Helicidae). The products were applied at two different concentrations, including 15 g/kg (Baitchain 15 and Sluggit 15) and 40 g/kg (Baitchain 40 and Sluggit 40) metaldehyde, and the products were either applied on their own, or in combination. Both treatments at 40 g/kg metaldehyde caused significant snail mortality when applied either on their own or in combination. However, significant mortality was also achieved by Baitchain 15 when applied on its own as well as in combination with Sluggit 15. The increased efficacy achieved by using Baitchain, even at the lower concentration, indicates that this novel method offers a viable physical and chemical control option for molluscs and could be incorporated as part of an integrated pest management strategy in South Africa, as well as other parts of the world.

RESUMO

During a survey for mollusc-associated nematodes in South Africa, a new Phasmarhabditis species was isolated from the invasive slug, Deroceras reticulatum, collected from a nursery near George in the Western Cape province. The nematode was identified using a combination of morphological, morphometric, molecular, and phylogenetic techniques. The new species, P. safricana n. sp., is characterised by the cupola-shaped tail of the female with a spike, small, non-protruding phasmids, a fingerprint-like pattern of the cuticle covering the female tail, toothlike cephalic structures of the infective juveniles, and the distinct molecular characteristics of the species. The molecular phylogeny of the new species, as inferred from its SSU and LSU rRNA gene, places P. safricana n. sp. in close proximity to P. papillosa. Virulence tests were conducted, which demonstrated that P. safricana n. sp. caused significant mortality to the European invasive slug, D. reticulatum. The new species brings the total complement of the genus to eleven species.
