RESUMO
Neutrons produced by the carbon fusion reaction (12)C((12)C,n)(23)Mg play an important role in stellar nucleosynthesis. However, past studies have shown large discrepancies between experimental data and theory, leading to an uncertain cross section extrapolation at astrophysical energies. We present the first direct measurement that extends deep into the astrophysical energy range along with a new and improved extrapolation technique based on experimental data from the mirror reaction (12)C((12)C,p)(23)Na. The new reaction rate has been determined with a well-defined uncertainty that exceeds the precision required by astrophysics models. Using our constrained rate, we find that (12)C((12)C,n)(23)Mg is crucial to the production of Na and Al in pop-III pair instability supernovae. It also plays a nonnegligible role in the production of weak s-process elements, as well as in the production of the important galactic γ-ray emitter (60)Fe.
RESUMO
The need of neutron capture cross section measurements for astrophysics motivates present work, where calculations to generate stellar neutron spectra at different temperatures are performed. The accelerator-based (7)Li(p,n)(7)Be reaction is used. Shaping the proton beam energy and the sample covering a specific solid angle, neutron activation for measuring stellar-averaged capture cross section can be done. High-quality Maxwell-Boltzmann neutron spectra are predicted. Assuming a general behavior of the neutron capture cross section a weighted fit of the spectrum to Maxwell-Boltzmann distributions is successfully introduced.
RESUMO
The angiotensin II receptor subtype 2 (AT2-R) has been proposed to mediate protective vascular actions after brain injury. In this study we investigated the participation of this peptide in the tolerance to cellular damage induced by preconditioning in a rat model of neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI). We found that injured animals present a decreased number of microvessels in the ipsilateral (IPLT) side of the brain while in the contralateral (CNLT) side the microvessel number is increased. On the contrary, in the preconditioned animals the microvessels maintained the same number as in control animals. However these vessels show a remarkable increase of the fluorescent signal when they are labeled with antiFlk-1 (VEGFR2), while the Flt-1 (VEGFR1) signal faded in both the injured and the preconditioned animals. The pharmacological blockade of the AT2-R by the drug PD123319 (1.69 mM in the lateral ventricle) diminished the resilience of the microvasculature to HI injury provided by preconditioning and also the Flk-1 increase that occurred in these animals. In conclusion these results suggest an interaction of the AT2-R with VEGFR2 in the neonatal brain microvasculature that produces protective effects which are associated with injury tolerance.

Observations of galactic gamma-ray activity have challenged the current understanding of nucleosynthesis in massive stars. Recent measurements of (60)Fe abundances relative to ;{26}Al;{g} have underscored the need for accurate nuclear information concerning the stellar production of (60)Fe. In light of this motivation, a first measurement of the stellar (60)Fe(n, gamma)(61)Fe cross section, the predominant destruction mechanism of (60)Fe, has been performed by activation at the Karlsruhe Van de Graaff accelerator. Results show a Maxwellian averaged cross section at kT = 25 keV of 9.9 +/-_{1.4(stat)};{2.8(syst)}mbarn, a significant reduction in uncertainty with respect to existing theoretical discrepancies. This result will serve to significantly constrain models of (60)Fe nucleosynthesis in massive stars.
