RESUMO

The genus Pseudaethria Schaus is revised and redescribed based on morphological characters of male and female adults. Its type species, Pseudaethria cessogae Schaus, was found out to be a junior subjective synonym of Heliura cosmosomodes Dognin. Therefore, the new combination Pseudaethria cosmosomodes is proposed along with another one: Pseudaethria analis Gaede new combination. A lectotype is designated to P. cessogae, which was described from an undetermined number of specimens. The distribution of the species is discussed as well as its systematic placement.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate genetic divergence in the 'Carioca' (beige with brown stripes) common bean cultivar used by different institutions and in 16 other common bean cultivars used in the Rede Cooperativa de Pesquisa de Feijão (Cooperative Network of Common Bean Research), by using simple sequence repeats associated with agronomic traits that are highly distributed in the common bean genome. We evaluated 22 polymorphic loci using bulks containing DNA from 30 plants. There was genetic divergence among the Carioca cultivar provided by the institutions. Nevertheless, there was lower divergence among them than among the other cultivars. The cultivar used by Instituto Agronômico do Paraná was the most divergent in relation to the Carioca samples. The least divergence was observed among the samples used by Universidade Federal de Lavras and by Embrapa Arroz e Feijão. Of all the cultivars, 'CNFP 10104' and 'BRSMG Realce' showed the greatest dissimilarity. The cultivars were separated in two groups of greatest similarity using the Structure software. Genetic variation among cultivars was greater than the variation within or between the groups formed. This fact, together with the high estimate of heterozygosity observed and the genetic divergence of the samples of the Carioca cultivar in relation to the original provided by Instituto Agronômico de Campinas, indicates a mixture of cultivars. The high divergence among cultivars provides potential for the utilization of this genetic variability in plant breeding.

RESUMO

The type material of 54 names of Ctenuchina, Euchromiina and Pericopina proposed by Hans Zerny are treated. Of these, the material belonging to 43 of the 54 names, represented by 118 specimens, are deposited at the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (NHMW). The remaining are at the BMNH, NMNH, ZMHB or the ZSM, except for one of the species, which material was not traced. Comments on each name and its current taxonomic status, illustrations of holotypes and lectotypes, as well as information about their conservation status are provided. Lectotypes are designated for 23 of the taxa, and two new synonyms are proposed Eucyane variabilis flavofasciata and E. variabilis roseofasciata (=Hypocrita variabilis variabilis). Additionally, nine names have their taxonomic status changed: Correbia columbiana stat. nov., Autochloris jordani comb. nov., Chrostosoma exomelan comb. nov., C. flavothoracides comb. nov., C. pseudothia comb. nov., C. xanthomelan comb. nov., Ecdemus imbecillus comb. nov., Pseudomya clandestina comb. nov., and Uranophora felderi, comb. nov. Illustrations of the genitalia of some of the species are also provided.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to test the precision and accuracy of three-dimensional (3D) linear measurements for Le Fort I osteotomy, obtained from multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. The study population consisted of 11 dried skulls submitted to 64-row MSCT and CBCT scans. Three-dimensional reconstructed images (3D-CT) were generated, and linear measurements (n=11) based on anatomical structures and landmarks of interest for Le Fort I osteotomy were performed independently by two oral and maxillofacial radiologists, twice each, using Vitrea software; this allows true 3D measurement on 3D-CT images. The results demonstrated no statistically significant differences between the inter-examiner and intra-examiner analyses, and physical and true 3D linear measurements using MSCT and CBCT images. Regarding examiner accuracy, no statistically significant differences were found for the comparisons among the physical and the MSCT and the CBCT linear measurements by either examiner. For examiners 1 and 2, the analysis intra-examiner correlation coefficient ranged from 0.87 to 0.96 and 0.82 to 0.98, respectively, using MSCT, and from 0.84 to 0.98 and 0.80 to 0.98, respectively, using CBCT, indicating almost perfect agreement for all analyses performed. 3D linear measurements obtained from MSCT and CBCT images were considered precise and accurate for Le Fort I osteotomy and thus accurate and helpful for Le Fort I osteotomy planning.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the precision and accuracy of linear measurements for Le Fort I osteotomy performed by two different imaging software programs and obtained from three-dimensional cone beam CT (3D-CBCT) images. METHODS: The study population consisted of 11 dried skulls submitted to CBCT, which generated 3D images. Linear measurements were based on craniometric anatomical landmarks pre-defined by the authors as specifically used for Le Fort I osteotomy and were identified by two radiologists twice each, independently, using Vitrea 3.8.1 (Vital Images Inc., Plymouth, MN) and open-source digital imaging communication in medicine viewer OsiriX 1.2 64-bit (Pixmeo, Geneva, Switzerland). Subsequently, a third examiner made physical measurements using a digital caliper (167 series; Mitutoyo Sul Americana Ltd, Suzano, SP, Brazil). RESULTS: The results demonstrated a statistically significant difference between OsiriX and the gold standard, especially in the pterygoid process (TPtg L = 0.019, LLpPtg R = 0.016 and LLpPtg L = 0.012). Vitrea showed no statistical difference in comparison with the gold standard, and showed a high level of accuracy in all the measurements performed. The major difference found was 0.42 mm (LLpPtg R). Interexaminer analysis ranged from 0.90 to 0.97 using Vitrea and from 0.8 to 0.97 using OsiriX. Intraexaminer correlation coefficient ranged from 0.90 to 0.98 and from 0.84 to 0.98 for Examiners 1 and 2, respectively, using Vitrea and from 0.93 to 0.99 for Examiner 1 and from 0.64 to 0.96 for Examiner 2 using OsiriX. CONCLUSION: Vitrea may be considered as precise and accurate, insofar as it was able to perform all the 3D linear measurements. On the other hand, linear measurements performed using OsiriX were not successful in producing accurate linear measurements for Le Fort I osteotomy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: A wide variety of manifestations is presented in patients with Gaucher's disease (GD), including bone, haematology and visceral disturbances. This study was conducted to ascertain the main maxillofacial abnormalities by means of clinical survey, panoramic and cone beam CT (CBCT); to compare the patient's group with an age-sex matched control group; and to correlate clinical and radiological data. METHODS: Ten patients previously diagnosed with GD were submitted to clinical and radiological surveys (CBCT and panoramic radiographs). The examination consisted of anamnesis, extra- and intraoral examinations and analyses of each patient's records. Imaging data were collected from the point of view of 3 observers, and the results compared with a healthy group (20 individuals) by means of statistical analysis (Fisher's exact test). RESULTS: Gaucher patients had significantly more manifestations than otherwise healthy carriers. The most prevalent findings were enlarged marrow spaces, generalized osteopenia and effacement of jaw structures (mandibular canal, lamina dura and mental foramen). Here we describe a case in which thickening of the maxillary sinus mucosa was observed on CBCT rather than opacification of the sinus as seen on panoramic radiographs. Pathological fractures, root resorption and delay on tooth eruption were not observed. CONCLUSIONS: A poor relationship could be observed between clinical and radiological data. Patients showed important bone manifestations, which require careful diagnostic and surgical planning whenever necessary. Although panoramic radiographs have shown significant differences, CBCT is more effective in pointing out differences between patients and a control group, thus showing it as an important tool for evaluation of Gaucher patients.

RESUMO

After to characterize the clinic and epidemiological picture of the onchocerciasis in Yanomâmi region, RR, Brazil, begun in 1993, the National Health Foundation (FNS) implemented a Control and Treatment Pilot Project in Tootobi and Balawaú. Here, it was studied skin biopsies from 426 inhabitants. In the nodules of 86.7% from patients was encountered Onchocerca volvulus. The over-all prevalence in the examined population was 66.2%. The treatment with ivermectin covered 80.1% of total population. Adverse reactions, light and moderate, of the medicament were reported in 12.3% of the patients. These results agreeing with the medical literature and suggesting the viability of to increase of the programme for all Yanomâmi area in the next phase.

RESUMO

The Program of the Fundação "Centro de Pesquisa de Oncologia" (FCPO) and the Instituto Brasileiro de Controle do Câncer (IBCC) in São Paulo has examined 980,977 women from 1970 to September 1985. Dysplasias, in situ, and invasive carcinomas were detected in 15,123 women (1.5%). The rates of false-negative and false-positive cytologic diagnoses of the program are 2.3% and 27%, respectively. The following epidemiological variables were evaluated: age, parity, age at first sexual intercourse, age at first pregnancy, education, and age at menarche. It was found that women at higher risk for cervical carcinoma in this population were those 26 years of age or older, with 4 or more pregnancies, women who had the first coitus before 18 years of age, and the first complete pregnancy before 19, as well as illiterate women or those who did not complete the first 4 years of primary school. In Brazil, the frequencies of cervical carcinomas are 25.8% for in situ and 72.2% for invasive (0.4 to 1). In this program, the corresponding percentages are 61.0% for in situ and 39.0% for invasive carcinomas (1.6 to 1). Including dysplasias, the percentages for Brazil are 56.3% for severe dysplasias plus in situ carcinomas and 43.7% for invasive carcinomas (1.3 to 1). In the FCPO/IBCC Program these percentages are 83.2% and 16.8% (5 to 1).
