Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common primary tumor of the liver. Spreading outside the liver usually takes place in advanced stages of the disease, and bone is the third most common site of metastases. We present a case of hepatocellular carcinoma in which the first clinical manifestation was a single metastasis to the carpal bones. The interest of this case lies in the way this hepatocellular carcinoma manifested as well as in the unusual site of the metastasis (AU)

Antimalarial activity of 10 vegetal extracts (9 ethanolic extracts and 1 crude alkaloid extract), obtained from eight species traditionally used in Colombia to treat malaria symptoms, was evaluated in culture using Plasmodium falciparum chloroquine resistant (FcB2) strain and in vivo on rodent malaria Plasmodium berghei. The activity on ferriprotoporphyrin biomineralization inhibition test (FBIT) was also assessed. Against Plasmodium falciparum, eight extracts displayed good activity Abuta grandifolia (Mart.) Sandwith (Menispermaceae) leaves, Acacia farnesiana (L.) Willd. (Mimosaceae) leaves, Acnistus arborescens (L.) Schltdl. (Solanaceae) aerial part, Croton leptostachyus Kunth (Euphorbiaceae) aerial part, Piper cumanense Kunth (Piperaceae) fruits and leaves, Piper holtonii C. DC. (Piperaceae) aerial part and Xylopia aromatica (Lam.) Mart. (Annonaceae) bark with IC(50) values ranging from <1 to 2.1 microg/ml, while in the in vivo model only Abuta grandifolia alkaloid crude extract exhibits activity, inhibiting 66% of the parasite growth at 250 mg/kg/day. In the FBIT model, five extracts were active (Abuta grandifolia, Croton leptostachyus, Piper cumanense fruit and leaves and Xylopia aromatica).

RESUMO

Rapanone (2,5-dihydroxy-3-tridecyl-1,4-benzoquinone), a natural compound isolated from Myrsine guianensis growing in the Andean highlands of Colombia, was studied in different in vitro and in vivo models as a potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory drug. Rapanone showed a mild anti-lipoperoxidative profile in rat liver microsomes and inhibited potently degranulation (IC(50) of 9.8 microM) and superoxide chemiluminescence (IC(50) of 3.0 microM) in human neutrophils. In addition, rapanone is a selective and potent human synovial PLA(2) inhibitor (IC(50) of 2.6 microM). In vivo experiments using the carrageenan paw oedema and the zymosan air pouch model in mice as well as the adjuvant arthritis model in rats have proved that rapanone is very efficient in controlling the inflammatory process by different administration routes.

RESUMO

Oral administration of rapanone to a group of female mice at doses of 60 and 120 mg/kg, reduced the percentage of pregnancies compared to control group, suggesting an anovulatory effect. Postcoital administration induced uterine alteration in both the first and second gestation periods. These results seem to indicate inhibition of trophoblast implantation in the first period, and an abortive effect and/or reabsorption in the second. Daily administration of rapanone to a group of male mice resulted in fertility alteration, which is attributed to an antispermatogenic effect. Rapanone did not show acute toxic effects at the doses tested in this research.

RESUMO

Petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and methanolic leaf extracts of Viburnum toronis Killip et Smith were studied. From the petroleum ether extract, fatty acids of methyl esters such as methyl myristate, methyl palmitate, methyl stearate and methyl araquidonate were identified by means of GC-MS. From the ethyl acetate extract, 2-methylbutanoic, 2-methyl-2-butenoic, 3-methylbutanoic acids and 4-hydroxy-4-methylpentanone were identified by means of GC-MS. Through the isolated organ technique, uterine relaxant was verified; and through the method of writhings induced by acetic acid, the antinociceptive activity of methanolic extracts and the extract in ethyl acetate were verified. It was found that the extract in ethyl acetate showed the greatest in both uterine relaxant and antinociceptive activity at doses of 250 mg/kg.

RESUMO

CH2Cl2 and MeOH extracts of 15 Argentine plants used locally as insecticides, were evaluated for their insecticidal activity. Chenopodium multifidum L. (Chenopodiaceae); Flaveria bidentis (L.) O.K. (Compositae); Aristolochia argentina Gris. (Aristolochiaceae) and Tagetes erecta L. (Compositae) showed a significant activity against Sitophilus oryzae.

RESUMO

It is common belief that carcinoma of the pancreas has an inherent and unique ability to induce a hypercoagulable diathesis that leads to clinically significant thrombosis. We evaluated 130 consecutive patients with adenocarcinoma of the pancreas to document the incidence and the predisposing factors related to the postulated increased association of thromboembolic disorder (TED) and pancreatic carcinoma. Only nine such patients (6.9%) demonstrated TED complications of the classical Trousseau syndrome. In these instances, the location of the tumor and its mucin-producing potential were significant predisposing factors. In our series, TED was usually associated with tumors of the body and tail, which had a greater likelihood to be mucinogenic as compared with those localized to the head of the pancreas. Routine tests for hemostasis were not helpful in predicting the development of TED except, perhaps, for decreased platelet counts. Therefore, we believe that the relationship between cancer of the pancreas and TED should be de-emphasized since it is neither unique nor especially common to pancreatic carcinoma and since it may be frequently encountered in other varieties of visceral malignancies of the cancer patient population.

RESUMO

Enzyme extraction methods are commonly used to release antigen for Lancefield serogrouping of streptococci. Recently, up to 47% of enterococci have been found to possess antigens cross-reactive with both the group D and the group G grouping reagents. We investigated whether the organisms had recently emerged or whether changes in extraction methods (enzyme extraction) have resulted in our awareness of their existence. We found that approximately 20% of our enterococcal isolates released material cross-reactive with the group G reagents. These organisms have been present for at least 6 years, and probably for many more. In addition, we found that most strains of Listeria monocytogenes also released antigen cross-reactive with the group G reagent. The clinical significance of these findings is also discussed.
