Introduction There have been many barriers to exercising at a gym due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic worldwide. Home-based aerobic interval training (AIT) combined with resistance training (RT) may be helpful for obese adults with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) to overcome those barriers and improve their subjective sleep disorders. Thus, the present study aimed to examine the effects of home-based AIT combined with RT on subjective sleep disorders in obese adults with SDB. Material and Methods This study has a one-group pretest-posttest design. Twenty-one adults with obesity and SDB were assigned to perform 8 weeks of AIT combined with RT. Subjective sleep disorder variables including the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Berlin Questionnaire, and Epworth Sleepiness Scale were defined as primary outcomes. Anthropometric variables, physical fitness components, and blood biomarkers were assigned as secondary outcomes. All outcome measurements were examined at baseline and after 8 weeks of training. Results Daytime dysfunction of PSQI was significantly improved after 8 weeks of the exercise program ( p < 0.05). Upper and lower chest expansion and estimated maximum oxygen consumption were significantly increased after 8 weeks of the exercise program (all p < 0.05). None of the blood biomarkers changed after 8 weeks of training. Conclusion This study suggests that home-based AIT combined with RT effectively alleviates daytime dysfunction and seems to be more helpful in improving global PSQI in adults with obesity. Future studies with a larger sample size, under a controlled trial are recommended to prove the benefits of the exercise program.

Purpose: The Nijmegen questionnaire is a screening tool for detecting hyperventilation syndrome. The present study aimed to cross-culturally adapt the questionnaire to Thai language and test its psychometric properties for screening hyperventilation syndrome, in which the prevalence is increasing due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.Design/methodology/approach: The Thai version of the Nijmegen questionnaire (NQ-TH) was generated following a cross-cultural adaptation guideline including initial translation, synthesis of forward translation, back translation, expert committee review, and prefinal testing. Fifty control participants and one-hundred patients with symptoms related to hyperventilation syndrome were enrolled in this study for the determination of psychometric properties. Content validity, construct validity, internal consistency reliability, and test-retest reliability of the NQ-TH were assessed. Its discriminant ability and cutoff point for screening hyperventilation syndrome were also revealed. Findings: The obtained IOC and disappeared floor and ceiling effects indicated excellent content validity of the questionnaire. There were significant correlations between the total scores of the NQ-TH and other questionnaires and recorded respiratory measurements obtained from the patients, i.e., SF-36-TH (r = -0.257), HADS-TH (r = 0.331), RR (r = 0.377), and BHT (r = -0.444). This supported the construct validity of the NQ-TH. An acceptable internal consistency was also observed (Cronbach's alpha = 0.789). Test-retest repeatability of the questionnaire was high (ICC = 0.90). Moreover, the NQ-TH reliability was also ensured by calculated MDC (2.68). The cutoff point of the NQ-TH was at 20 with 98% sensitivity and 94% specificity.Originality/value: The NQ-TH established by the present study is a valid and reliable tool for screening hyperventilation syndrome among Thais.

Home-based pulmonary rehabilitation can decrease symptoms in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a home-based pulmonary rehabilitation by instructive multimedia in the form of videos and flip charts on clinical symptoms and exercise performance in COPD patients. An eight-week home-based pulmonary rehabilitation program was performed with twenty COPD patients older than 60 years of age with moderate to severe stages. They were separated into two groups: a multimedia group (n = 10) and a control group, which was only provided with telephone monitoring (n = 10). Clinical symptoms were measured by using the clinical COPD questionnaire (CCQ), and exercise performance was measured using a six-minute walk test (6MWT) and an upper-lower limb muscle strengthening test. After 8 weeks, the results showed that both groups showed a statistically significant decrease in the CCQ (p < 0.05). The multimedia group showed a statistically significant increase in the lower-limb muscle strengthening (p < 0.05), while the control group was not found to show a statistically significant increase in the lower-limb muscle strengthening. Therefore, a pulmonary rehabilitation program using multimedia at home can lessen symptoms and improve exercise performance in COPD patients.

INTRODUCTION: Most young adults do not achieve the recommended physical activity, and physical inactivity thus is a worldwide public health problem contributing to premature death. Although Thai dance has been reported to increase physical activity, a small number of studies have reported on the impact of Manorah. Herein Manorah is a signature traditional dramatic art of Southern Thailand. The present study aimed to reveal the effects of Manorah training on health-related variables. METHODS: Thirty-four young females were divided into two groups, where one group underwent Manorah training and the other represented the control. Manorah training was performed for 45 min/day, 3 days/week for 4 weeks. Median neural tension, balance, flexibility, and muscle endurance were determined. RESULTS: Manorah significantly decreased nerve tension (p < 0.001). Physical fitness was also markedly improved after the training. CONCLUSIONS: This Manorah program may be recommended as an exercise and an intervention for symptoms related to positive tension.

The COVID-19 global pandemic has had a socioeconomic effect, including many people suffering from stress and mental disorders. Health professional students are at risk of health issues as well when compared to their age-matched counterpart in the population. The present study aimed to find out the impact of COVID-19 awareness on the wellness of Thai health professional students. The awareness of COVID-19 and wellness among Thai health professional students, such as medical, physical therapy, nursing, pharmacy, and medical technology students were surveyed during the early "new normal" informing policy. The participants included 1,001 students, aged 17 to 25 years old, who responded to a Google form questionnaire set by request. The results showed that the prominent health risks among the Thai health professional students included sedentary behavior, obesity, and mental symptoms. A positive rating in attitude towards the COVID-19 epidemic was mostly observed. There was a negative influence on anxiety symptoms (standardized coefficient beta = -0.079, p-value = 0.012), but a positive impact on social well-being (standardized coefficient beta = 0.158, p-value < 0.001) and quality of life (standardized coefficient beta = 0.136, p-value < 0.001) among the students even when the situation was improving. To relieve the domino effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on students' wellness, an updated policy for enhancing awareness and providing updated information is continuously required. Improvements on self and situational awareness may help prevent health risk behaviors and promote health among Thai health professional students.

BACKGROUND: Childhood is an important period for developing maturity in thinking. Accumulating evidence shows the association between physical activity and cognitive function. Although both the intelligence quotient and emotional quotient have been reported to be associated with physical activity, there is a limited amount of published research regarding the association between physical activity and cognitive function in children and youths. With respect to creativity, an important skill for the twenty-first century, little evidence on the creative quotient promotion in childhood is available. The present study, therefore, is designed to explore the correlation between physical activity and creativity. METHODS: The participants included 1447 students with different age groups in 34 schools from Southern Thailand. Age groups were categorized according to Thailand's 2016 Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth, where 521 students were aged 6-9 years, 487 students were aged 10-13 years, and 439 students were aged 14-17 years. Creativity was measured through the use of the Test for Creative Thinking-Drawing Production (TCT-DP). Active play, time with family and peers, and sedentary behavior were monitored by the Thailand Physical Activity Children Survey-the Student Questionnaire (TPACS-SQ). RESULTS: The correlation between the TCT-DP score representing creativity and active play was noticed in adolescents (r = 0.148, p = 0.001), but not found in participants aged 6-13 years. Active play was associated with time with family and peers in all age groups (r = 0.485, p <  0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The present data supports the idea that optimal physical activity is required during childhood for developing thinking process. Promotion of active play with family and peers may facilitate creativity skills.
