RESUMO

Orthopaedists are increasingly using femoral heads as bone grafts, which can be easily stored by freezing without elaborate equipment and with minimum personnel involved. Our experience has shown that if standard sterile techniques are followed in procurement and storage, an abundant supply of useful allografts can be ensured.

RESUMO

In 19 patients with unstable angina pectoris at rest, plasma levels of the platelet-derived proteins beta-thromboglobulin and platelet factor 4 were significantly elevated in blood samples obtained during or within 4 hours after episodes of angina, but were usually normal during quiescent intervals. Plasma levels of the arachidonic acid metabolite thromboxane B2 were less clearly related to angina, and there was no association of angina with levels of the coagulation product fibrinopeptide A. This demonstration of an association of platelet activation and secretion with unstable angina pectoris by radioimmunoassay of circulating platelet constituents offers a new approach to assessment of therapy in ischemic heart disease and suggests that agents that alter platelet function should be evaluated in patients with unstable angina.

RESUMO

We compared the results of cranial computed tomography (CT) and lumbar puncture (LP) in patients who had subarachnoid hemorrhage due to proven ruptured intracranial aneurysm. We found no correlation between the number of red blood cells in the cerebrospinal fluid collected by LP and the amount and extent of blood detected by CT.

RESUMO

Patients who underwent radiographic phlebography were studied to determine the frequency of postphlebographic venous thrombosis. In a group of 23 patients who had negative phlebograms performed with standard contrast agent (60% sodium methylglucamine diatrizoate), nine had positive 125I-fibrinogen leg scans. On repeat phlebography, three had confirmed deep vein thrombosis, six overall developed deep or superficial thrombosis, and three had positive scans without demonstrable thrombi. In a second group of 34 patients studied with the contrast material diluted to 45%, only three developed positive scans, one due to deep venous thrombosis and two to superficial thrombosis. There was also a reduction in the incidence of postphlebographic symptoms of pain, tenderness, and erythema, but no apparent sacrifice in diagnostic accuracy.

RESUMO

In a prospective randomized study of patients undergoing open urological operations, we found external pneumatic compression (EPC) of the calves applied in the operating room and recovery room as effective in reducing deep vein thrombosis as EPC continued during convalescence until resumption of ambulation. Provided early postoperative ambulation is practiced, intraoperative EPC appears to be adequate prophylaxis and equivalent to long-term EPC for prevention of deep venous thrombosis in urological patients.
