RESUMO

Employing ultrafast laser excitation and time-correlated single-photon counting, we have measured the fine-structure transfer between Rb 5P states induced by collisions with 4He buffer gas at temperatures up to 150 °C. The temperature dependence of the binary cross section agrees with earlier measurements. Our data show that the temperature dependence of the three-body rate is about the same as that of the binary rate. The three-body rate can be described as arising from the reduction of the rubidium fine-structure splitting due to nearby helium atoms.

RESUMO

Treatment of ischemic cerebrovascular disease is a complex area requiring multi-level assessment and intervention. The need for urgent acute and aggressive intervention is clear. The armamentarium in stroke treatment is growing with new therapies under active investigation including thrombolytic agents, NMDA antagonists and amino acid blockers, and for radical scavengers. Very likely a multimodality medical therapy approach will evolve and the time has arrived for aggressive care of the stroke patient.

RESUMO

Epilepsy is a fascinating disorder reflective of ongoing brain activity which at times is disordered. There have been significant advances in the understanding of the pharmacology of antiepileptic drugs such that effective treatment is feasible. Understanding the epilepsies and the phenomena of epileptic seizures will permit one to successfully deal with the major issues around these syndromes and lead to a very rewarding outcome.

RESUMO

With recent technological and medical advances, basic cardiopulmonary function can now be prolonged in many patients. Concurrently, organ transplantations have become more common and interest in living wills has increased. As a result, the South Carolina physician is increasingly obligated to determine whether a patient receiving cardiopulmonary support is dead due to irreversible cessation of brain function (ICBF) (brain dead). Here we review the bedside clinical valuation of brain death (ICBF), the adjunctive use of the EEG and other tests, and the South Carolina laws pertaining to this complex decision.
