RESUMO

AIM: Study prevalence of adenovirus species and serotypes that had caused acute respiratory viral infection (ARVI) in Moscow in 2004 - 2014. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Material from respiratory tract of 4731 patients with ARVI and 663 conditionally healthy children and adults was used. ARVI causative agents were detected by PCR with real-time detection using AmpliSens reagent kits (CRIE, Moscow). Membership of adenoviruses to a certain serotype was determined by sequencing of hexon gene segment. Adenoviruses that had caused ARD in servicemen in 2010 - 2014 were also studied. RESULTS: ARVI causative agents were detected in 64.6% ill children and 58% of adults. Respiratory-syncytial and rhinoviruses prevailed in children, influenza A virus--in adults. Adenoviruses were detected in 6.9% of ill children and 2.9% of adults during the whole year, with a rise in October-December. B and C species occurred at an equal frequency, E species was found less often. Serotypes 3 and 2 prevailed in 34% and 21% of cases of adenovirus mono-infection, respectively, serotypes 7, 6 and 4 occurred less often. 4 out of 5 outbreaks of adenovirus infection in servicemen were caused by serotype 7. Adenoviruses were absent in the group of healthy adults, in conditionally healthy children were detected in 0.4% of cases and were attributed to serotypes 1 and 2. CONCLUSION: Etiological structure of ARVI was studied for the last decade. Adenovirus infection ranked 5th in children and 7th in adults. 9 serotypes of 3 species of respiratory adenoviruses were identified. Varying prevalence of species and serotypes depending in season, clinical diagnosis and patient age was demonstrated.

RESUMO

The data on natural course of chronic viral hepatitis C infection (HCV) and the efficacy of antiviral treatment depending on virus genotype are summarized in the article. The significance of virus genotype in progression of liver fibrosis and liver steatosis is discussed. It is pointed out that chronic HCV infection caused by genotype 3 is characterized by a more aggressive clinical course of disease and less favorable prognosis. Optimal approaches to the management of patients with genotype 3 of chronic HCV infection as well as perspectives of antiviral therapy in this group of patients are discussed in the article. RESUMO

During a 2-year period in 2005-2007, we conducted surveillance of group A rotaviruses and other enteric agents among patients hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis in 8 different cities of the Russian Federation. Fecal specimens were gathered from 3208 children (including 2848 children aged <5 years) and 1354 adults who were admitted to hospitals in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Chelyabinsk, Nizhnii Novgorod, Tyumen, Khabarovsk, Makhachkala, and Yakutsk. Polymerase chain reaction was performed to detect rotaviruses of groups A and C, noroviruses of genogroups I and II, astrovirus, sapovirus, and enteric adenoviruses (group F). Group A rotavirus was the most common viral pathogen detected among children aged <5 years (43.6%), followed by norovirus (12.5%), whereas norovirus was the pathogen most commonly detected in adults (11.9%). P and G genotypes were determined for 515 rotavirus specimens, and the most prevalent genotypes were G1P[8] (44.9%), G4P[8] (40.0%), G2P[4] (8.5%), and G3P[8] (6.6%). This study is the first multicenter study of rotaviruses in the Russian Federation and documents the important burden of disease caused by this pathogen, which soon may be preventable by vaccination.

RESUMO

Synthetic Salmonella O-antigens of a new copolymeric type, unlike natural antigens (lipopolysaccharides), exhibit monospecificity for groupspecific factors 0 : 3, 0 : 4, and 0 : 9 of Salmonella serogroups E, B, and D, and are, by 1-2 orders of magnitude, more sensitive in double immunodiffusion and passive hemagglutination inhibition tests. The use of the synthetic antigens for detection of antibodies in patients' sera by means of passive hemagglutination increased the specificity of this test considerably, thereby improving immunodiagnosis of salmonellosis.
