Hemorrhage and Sudden Death in a Cat with Pancreatic Hemangiosarcoma.

A 15-year-old female, indoor, spayed, domestic shorthair cat was presented for post-mortem evaluation with a history of sudden death. A red-brown 3 cm x 4 cm neoplastic mass was identified within the body of the pancreas, along with multiple similar nodular structures within the omentum and liver. Associated lesions included hemoperitoneum, yellow discoloration of the peritoneal wall, and severe anemia. Spindle-shaped neoplastic cells exhibiting malignancy features, which occasionally contained within the cytoplasm haematoidin crystals and/or red blood cells, were observed during cytological examination. Histologically, the neoplastic cells were organized in short streams forming vascular spaces filled with erythrocytes. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were immunolabeled for vimentin and CD31, supporting the diagnosis of hemangiosarcoma. This report offers a complete post-mortem and histological evaluation of a rare tumor in cats with an unusual location and a comparative assessment of 3 anti-CD31 antibodies.

Curcumin and Vitamin C Attenuate Gentamicin-Induced Nephrotoxicity by Modulating Distinctive Reactive Species.

Gentamicin remains widely used in all age groups despite its well-documented nephrotoxicity; however, no adjuvant therapies have been established to counteract this side effect. Our study aimed to experimentally determine whether curcumin and vitamin C have nephroprotective effects and whether certain reactive species could be used as markers of early gentamicin nephrotoxicity. Wistar adult male rats were evenly distributed into four groups: control, gentamicin, curcumin and gentamicin, vitamin C and gentamicin (gentamicin: 60 mg/kg/day, intraperitoneally, 7 days). We determined renal function (urea, creatinine), oxidative stress (malondialdehyde, nitric oxide, 3-nitrotyrosine, total oxidative stress), and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory status (thiols, total antioxidant capacity, interleukin-10). Nephrotoxicity was successfully induced, as shown by the elevated creatinine levels in the gentamicin group. In contrast, supplementation with curcumin and vitamin C prevented an increase in urea levels while decreasing total oxidative stress levels compared to the gentamicin group. Moreover, vitamin C and curcumin distinctively modulate the levels of nitric oxide and malondialdehyde. Histological analysis showed more discrete lesions in rats that received vitamin C compared to the curcumin group.

Acute dental malocclusion associated with lateral pterygoid muscle partial tear: Case Report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: The article presents a rare case of acute malocclusion produced by a unilateral partial tear of the lateral pterygoid muscle and an up-to-date literature review of the pathology. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old female was examined; her chief complaints were pain on the right side of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) area and mastication impairment associated with major occlusal modifications and anterior open bite. After magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) of the TMJ and subsequent MRI for soft tissue, the final diagnosis was a partial right lateral pterygoid muscle tear. CONCLUSION: The case shows the value of combined imaging in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and the importance of soft tissue evaluation in addition to articular examination, as the primary pathology might lie outside the joint. The authors' review of the current literature did not hitherto reveal a similar case.

Exogenous Jaagsiekte Sheep Retrovirus type 2 (exJSRV2) related to ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma (OPA) in Romania: prevalence, anatomical forms, pathological description, immunophenotyping and virus identification.

BACKGROUND: Ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma (OPA) is a neoplastic disease caused by exogenous Jaagsiekte Sheep Retrovirus (exJSRV). The prevalence of JSRV-related OPA in Eastern European countries, including Romania is unknown. We aimed to investigate: the prevalence and morphological features of OPA (classical and atypical forms) in the Transylvania region (Romania), the immunophenotype of the pulmonary tumors and their relationships with exJSRV infection. A total of 2693 adult ewes slaughtered between 2017 and 2019 in two private slaughterhouses from Transylvania region (Romania) was evaluated. Lung tumors were subsequently assessed by cytology, histology, immunocytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy and DNA testing. RESULTS: Out of 2693 examined sheep, 34 had OPA (1.26% prevalence). The diaphragmatic lobes were the most affected. Grossly, the classical OPA was identified in 88.24% of investigated cases and the atypical OPA in 11.76% that included solitary myxomatous nodules. Histopathology results confirmed the presence of OPA in all suspected cases, which were classified into acinar and papillary types. Myxoid growths (MGs) were diagnosed in 6 classical OPA cases and in 2 cases of atypical form. Lung adenocarcinoma was positive for MCK and TTF-1, and MGs showed immunoreaction for Vimentin, Desmin and SMA; Ki67 expression of classical OPA was higher than atypical OPA and MGs. JSRV-MA was identified by IHC (94.11%) in both epithelial and mesenchymal cells of OPA. Immunocytochemistry and electron microscopy also confirmed the JSRV within the neoplastic cells. ExJSRV was identified by PCR in 97.05% of analyzed samples. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the presence of the exJSRV type 2 (MT809678.1) in Romanian sheep affected by lung cancer and showed a high similarity with the UK strain (AF105220.1). CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we confirmed for the first time in Romania the presence of exJSRV in naturally occurring OPA in sheep. Additionally, we described the first report of atypical OPA in Romania, and to the best of our knowledge, in Eastern Europe. Finally, we showed that MGs have a myofibroblastic origin.

The use of modern ultrasound tridimensional techniques for the evaluation of fetal cerebral midline structures- a practical approach.

Fetal central nervous system midline structures represent an essential landmark for the confirmation of normality or for the identification of severe pathology. The ultrasound examination of the fetal brain using modern 3D techniques allows the creation of high sensitivity reconstructions. The facility of 3D volume acquisition permits the identification of corpus callosum, median septum, cavum septi pellucid and cerebellar vermis even in difficult cases. The examination should rely on both static (3D) and dynamic acquisition (4D). The use of a practical ultrasound protocol in clinical settings ensures the visualization of the midline cerebral structures in the vast majorities of fetuses. In selected cases MRI can be performed.

Rehabilitation in a patient with replantation of amputated distal leg.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have been reported on replantation of an upper extremity after traumatic amputation, but there are only a few case reports on replantation of the lower extremities rather than amputation surgery. This is due to preoperative factors, complications and the possibility of good prosthetic substitution.We describe here the dynamic evaluation necessary for a continuous rehabilitation treatment in a subject with replanted left foot after traumatic amputation. CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old male person with amputation of the left leg at the level of the left talocrural joint, with talar dome and bimalleolar fractures and complete section of the blood vessels, nerves and tendons was considered for replantation surgery 7 hours after a traumatic injury.For an accurate evaluation of the postoperative conditions over time, clinical functional assessment combined with imaging and neurophysiological examination were conducted.Rehabilitation program is aimed to train the motor and sensory function of the replanted foot and to prevent undesired biomechanical changes that limit person's ability to perform everyday tasks. During the rehabilitation program there were a progressive recovery of the patient's protective sensation, active motion angles of the left ankle joint and muscle power of the replanted leg. Those are sufficient for walking activity and help the patient considerably in performing his everyday minimal housework. CONCLUSIONS: A well designed postoperative dynamic rehabilitation program is necessary in order to regain functionality after successful distal leg replantation surgery. The clinical and imaging evaluation support a dynamic rehabilitation program adapted to different stages of functional recovery.

Ultrasonography contribution in detection of reno-urinary anomalies: a cohort study.

AIMS: The current study aims to assess the role of ultrasound (US) parameters in explaining the variance of hydronephrosis grades in reno-urinary anomalies, as well as their performance in quantifying the incidence of patients with uropathies. METHODS: In this study 196 patients were prospectively included. All of them had renal/urinary tract anomalies and were recruited from 5992 US examined hospitalized patients. Fifty patients were referred also to renal 99mTc- DMSA or 99mTc-DTPA scintigraphy. The diagnostic performance of renal ultrasound and scintigrafy parameters was assessed. RESULTS: Pelvis antero-posterior diameter (APD) values were strongly correlated with other investigated parameters. They correlated with measurements of US parenchyma values (r=0.59, p=0.001), pelvis area (r=0.76, p=0.001) and with scintigraphy long axis measurements (r=0.89, p=0.001). In multiple regression analysis, the pelvis APD is the only independent predictor of high grades hydronephrosis (p=0.001) and explained 62.4% of the variance of hydronephrosis grades. The cut-off values for detection of significant hydronephrosis (grades 3,4) was 11 mm or more, and for detection of severe, in need of surgery, hydronephrosis was 19 mm or more. CONCLUSIONS: The diagnostic performance of ultrasound was good, similar to those previously published by other authors. US detected pelvis APD is the main predictor for high grades hydronephrosis but other parameters also influence the uropathy grades.

Interhemispheric lipoma associated with agenesis of corpus callosum in an infant: case report.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is an anomaly that may occur as isolated or in association with other central nervous system or systemic malformations. We report the case of an infant antenatal diagnosed with ventriculomegaly referred in the postnatal period to our department for imaging evaluation. Ultrasonography showed the absence of the corpus callosum and an interhemispheric lesion highly suggestive for a cerebral lipoma. The diagnosis was confirmed through MRI.
