RESUMO

The presence of exorbitant arsenic contamination in the aquatic environment causes astronomically immense health quandaries affecting millions of people, which may lead to death in the case of prolonged indigestion of arsenic-containing drinking water. Herein, we are reporting porous chelating resin with an iron precursor for the removal of arsenic ions from water. Weak acid cation resin was functionalized under varying experimental conditions to get a suitable resin with high arsenic uptake. The theoretical results revealed that the maximum Langmuir adsorption capacities of 3.27 mg g-1 and 1.13 mg g-1 were achieved for As(V) and As(III), respectively. The kinetics of adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order (PSO) model with a high determination coefficient (R2) of 0.9963 and 0.9895 for As(V) and As(III), respectively. The Adams-Bohart, Thomas, Yoon-Nelson, and Pore diffusion models were used to identify the breakthrough curve in the fixed bed adsorption column. The column performance improved with a larger bed height (55 cm), low concentration of influent (0.25 mg L-1), and low flow rate of influent (80 mL min-1). Under this condition, the breakthrough time and exhaustion time were 314 min and 408 min for As(V) and 124 min and 185 min for As(III), respectively.

RESUMO

A simple and eco-friendly method for the synthesis of hybrid bead silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) employing the aqueous extract derived from natural and renewable source namely tropical benthic green seaweed Ulva flexuosa was developed. This route involves the reduction of Ag+ ions anchored onto macro porous methacrylic acid copolymer beads to AgNPs for employing them as antibacterial agents for in vitro water disinfection. The seaweed extract itself acts as a reducing and stabilizing agent and requires no additional surfactant or capping agent for forming the AgNPs. The nanoparticles were analyzed using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. The study elucidates that such biologically synthesized AgNPs exhibit potential antibacterial activity against two Gram positive (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus) and two Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacterial strains tested. The bacterial count in treated water was reduced to zero for all the strains. Atomic force microscopy was performed to confirm the pre- and post-state of the bacteria with reference to their treatment with AgNPs. Attributes like facile environment-friendly procedure, stability and high antibacterial potency propel the consideration of these AgNPs as promising antibacterial entities.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cancer cells can produce lactate in high concentrations. Two previous studies examined the clinical relevance of serum lactate as a biomarker in patients with brain tumors. Patients with high-grade tumors have higher serum concentrations of lactate than those with low-grade tumors. We hypothesized that serum lactic could be used of biomarker to predictor of survival in patients with glioblastoma (GB). METHODS: This was a retrospective study. Demographic, lactate concentrations and imaging data from 275 adult patients with primary GB was included in the analysis. The progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) rates were compared in patients who had above and below the median concentrations of lactate. We also investigated the correlation between lactate concentrations and tumor volume. Multivariate analyses were conducted to test the association lactate, tumor volume and demographic variables with PFS and OS. RESULTS: The median serum concentration of lactate was 2.3mmol/L. A weak correlation was found between lactate concentrations and tumor volume. Kaplan-Meier curves demonstrated similar survival in patients with higher or lower than 2.3mmol/L of lactate. The multivariate analysis indicated that the intraoperative levels of lactate were not independently associated with changes in survival. On another hand, a preoperative T1 volume was an independent predictor PFS (HR 95%CI: 1.41, 1.02-1.82, p=0.006) and OS (HR 95%CI: 1.47, 1.11-1.96, p=0.006). CONCLUSION: This retrospective study suggests that the serum concentrations of lactate cannot be used as a biomarker to predict survival after GB surgery. To date, there are no clinically available serum biomarkers to determine prognosis in patients with high-grade gliomas. These tumors may produce high levels of lactic acid. We hypothesized that serum lactic could be used of biomarker to predictor of survival in patients with glioblastoma (GB). In this study, we collected perioperative and survival data from 275 adult patients with primary high-grade gliomas to determine whether intraoperative serum acid lactic concentrations can serve as a marker of prognosis. The median serum concentration of lactate was 2.3mmol/L. Our analysis indicated the intraoperative levels of lactate were not independently associated with changes in survival. This retrospective study suggests that the serum concentrations of lactate cannot be used as a biomarker to predict survival after GB surgery.

RESUMO

We develop, analyze, and apply a specific form of mixture modeling for density estimation within the context of image and texture processing. The technique captures much of the higher order, nonlinear statistical relationships present among vector elements by combining aspects of kernel estimation and cluster analysis. Experimental results are presented in the following applications: image restoration, image and texture compression, and texture classification.

RESUMO

The effect of exercise on pulmonary gas exchange was investigated in 7 patients with pulmonary hypertension resulting from primary pulmonary hypertension or recurrent pulmonary emboli. During supine bicycle exercise averaging 2.4 times baseline O2 consumption there was a significant fall in the arterial PO2 (64 +/- 1.1 to 56 +/- 5.4) and widening of the alveolar-arterial gradient for O2 (50 +/- 4.6 to 62 +/- 5.5). Measurement of the distribution of ventilation-perfusion (VA/Q) ratios by the multiple inert gas technique demonstrated no increase in VA/Q inequality. The increased hypoxemia was due to the fall in the mixed venous PO2 and its impact on the end-capillary blood of the shunt and low VA/Q units present at both rest and exercise. A concomitant shift in the mean VA/Q ratio for the normal lung units mitigated but could not eliminate the fall in the arterial PO2. We conclude that the increased hypoxemia seen during exercise in these patients is due to the widened arterial-venous O2 difference expected with exercise and its effect on the mild VA/Q inequality characteristic of this disorder.

RESUMO

Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) has been shown to limit infarct size, improve coronary blood flow, inhibit platelet aggregation, and reduce both left ventricular (LV) preload and afterload in experimental animals. Its use in the therapy of patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and congestive heart failure (CHF) has not, however, been reported. Five patients with AMI of less than 12 hours' duration and LV dysfunction were studied to assess the hemodynamic effects of IV infusion of PGE1. PGE1 in the concentration of 0.4 microgram/ml was infused at a rate of 0.003 microgram2kg/min (3 ng . kg-1 . min-1) to a maximum rate of 0.021 microgram/kg/min (21 ng . kg-1 . min-1) for a total time of up to 90 minutes. There was an insignificant increase in heart rate, with significant decreases in mean arterial blood pressure and systemic vascular resistance. Pulmonary capillary wedge pressure declined from 21 +/- 3 to 15 +/ 1 mm Hg (p less than 0.05), mean pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance decreased (p less than 0.05), mean pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance decreased (p less than 0.05), with increases in cardiac index from 2.38 +/- 0.08 to 2.89 +/- 0.58 L/min/m2 (p less than 0.01) and stroke volume from 51 +/- 17 to 59 +/- 20 ml/beat (p less than 0.05). No major cardiac or extracardiac side effects were encountered during PGE1 infusion. One patient had transient nausea which did not require discontinuation of the drug. PGE1 is an effective vasodilator and deserves further application in therapy for AMI patients with CHF.

RESUMO

Two patients were treated with bretylium tosylate for malignant ventricular arrhythmias after inadequate response to conventional agents. In the first patient, two episodes of ventricular tachycardia requiring cardioversion occurred in close temporal sequence with administering bretylium. With drug rechallenge two days later, ventricular tachycardia recurred within minutes. In the second case, five cardiac arrests due to ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation occurred during several hours after beginning a trial of bretylium maintenance therapy for complex ventricular ectopy. Although transient increases in ectopy after bretylium therapy have been described, presumably due to catecholamine release, the occurrence of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmia leading to cardiac arrest has not previously been emphasized. There is potential for this side effect, and additional caution in the use of this drug should be followed.

RESUMO

Six normal male volunteers received 0.5 mg label doses of digoxin as (a) a bolus intravenous injection over 2 min, (b) a constant rate intravenous infusion over 1 hr, (c) a constant rate intravenous infusion over 3 h, and (d) a solution in 5% dextrose given orally. Plasma concentrations of digoxin were measured by radioimmunoassay for a 4 day period and urinary excretion for a 6 day period after the single doses. The mean (coefficient of variation) total areas under the plasma concentration-time curves per 0.5 mg of digoxin were (a) 35.55 (14.8%), (b) 30.20 (27.7%), (c) 25.80 (35.5%), and (d) 15.47 (49.9%); the means differed significantly (0.01 greater than p greater than 0.005). The mean (coefficient of variation) total amounts excreted in the urine as a fraction of the dose were (a) 0.689 (6.31%), (b) 0.517 (20.4%), (c) 0.588 (16.8%), and (d) 0.374 (23.4%); the means differed significantly (p less than 0.001). Both the total clearance and the nonrenal clearance of digoxin differed significantly with the method of intravenous administration. The slower the rate of input of digoxin to the body, the greater were both the total clearance and the nonrenal clearance of the drug, which strongly suggests nonlinear pharmacokinetics.
