PURPOSE: Analysis of local and systemic effects of RS-timolol enantiomer and S-timolol in patients with ocular hypertension and glaucoma: evaluation of Risk/Benefit Ratio. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 19 patients (38 eyes) receiving 0.85% RS-timolol and 10 patients (20 eyes) receiving 0.5% S-timolol were evaluated using a double-blank test. Intraocular pressure, heart rate, systemic arterial blood pressure, ECG and spirometry were recorded before and 2 hours after drugs administration and after 7 days of treatment. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between intraocular pressure-lowering effects of RS-timolol and S-timolol. In patients receiving both medicines bradycardia was detected 2 hours after drugs administration. Patients receiving RS-timolol showed increased expiratory capacity in comparison to those receiving S-timolol. There was no detectable influence of both medicines on ECG and systemic arterial blood pressure. CONCLUSIONS: 0.85% RS-timolol and 0.5% S-timolol produced comparable intraocular pressure-lowering effects. 0.85% RS-timolol exerted less severe influence on respiratory system.

After the experimental application of sulphur mustard contained in Psoriazin produced by Medexport, the kidney of white rats is examined by means of histologic and histochemical methods. It was noted that the prolonged application of Psoriazin caused changes in the convoluted tubules.

[Effect of progestagens administered during pregnancy on histochemical reaction in fetal liver]. / Wplyw progestagenów podawanych w okresie ciazy na odczyny histochemiczne w watrobie plodowej.

Fetal liver was examined in rats, whose mothers during pregnancy received Turinal (firm: Chemical Works of Gedeon Richter LTD Budapest, Hungary) in a dosage of 0.5 mg/kg BW in the experimental group I and 1 mg/kg BW in the experimental group II. Reaction to the activity of succinate dehydrogenase, lactic dehydrogenase, acid phosphatase, glucose-6-phosphatase, PAS-reaction (Periodic acid Schiff reaction) and hematoxylin-eosin staining were carried out. Changes in the activity of examined enzymes and PAS-reaction in fetal liver depending on dosage were observed. These changes testify to a large influence of administered hormone on metabolism of developing fetal liver.

[The effect of psoriazin preparation on the morphologic and the histochemical liver image]. / Der Einfluss des Präparats Psoriazin auf das morphologische und das histochemische Leberbild.

The effect of Psoriazin-ointment, applied locally to the skin, has been examined by histochemical reactions and morphological examination in the rat's liver. It was found out that the longer application of the ointment changed the activity of all examined enzymes and the PAS reaction and caused a local steatosis of the hepatocytes.

[Effect of Biseptol on the state of gastric mucosa in the white rat under experimental conditions (after excision of one lobe of the liver or one kidney)]. / Untersuchungen des Einflusses von Biseptol auf den Zustand der Magenschleimhaut der weissen Ratte unter Versuchsbedingungen (nach der Entfernung eines Leberlappens oder einer Niere).

The effect of Biseptol on the mucous membrane of the stomach of an unoperated white rat was analysed and also the effect after liver lobectomy or unilateral nephrectomy. There were performed histochemical reactions to mucopolysaccharides and nucleic acids as well as staining with hematoxyline ond eosine. After administration of Biseptol in a dose of 270 mg/kg b.w. for 7 consecutive d, increased secretion of mucous and inflammation in gastric mucous membrane was observed. No intensification of these symptoms was found after administration of Biseptol to operated animals. It may be supposed that hepatectomy and nephrectomy are not counterindications for the use of Biseptol.
