The capacity of computerized tomography to assess myocardial edema resulting from acute coronary occlusion was investigated in 19 arrested and 2 beating canine hearts. Edematous myocardium was consistently detected as areas of decreased attenuation values. The magnitude of the decrease in attenuation value was linearly related to the severity of the edema. The anatomic definition and tomographic information in the arrested hearts provided the capability for localization and quantitation of the extent of the lesion. The results of these in vitro investigations indicate that CT scanning is a technique which will contribute important pathophysiologic information about the evolution of myocardial ischemia.

Hoplolaimus columbus suppressed growth and pod yield of soybean in greenhouse tests. Although populations of H. columbus decreased in short-term experiments, increases occurred in long-term studies. The nematode caused extensive damage to the cortical parenchyma and occasionally to the endodermal-vascular region of both cotton and soybean roots. The nematode frequently entered secondary root primordia. Roots of soybean parasitized by H. columbus at high inoculum levels were severely damaged. The relationship of populations of H. columbus and stunting of soybean and cotton is discussed.
RESUMO
These studies indicate that a heparin bound membrane oxygenator can be used in venovenous bypass circuit in dogs for a period of 5 days without systemic heparinization. The plasma SGOT, plasma hemoglobin, and MLW of the animals increased after initiation of bypass but returned to control levels. Oxygen transfer did not deteriorate in the membrane oxygenator, eliminating the necessity of membrane exchange during the 5-day bypass.
