RESUMO

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: To compare the antibacterial activity of root canal filling materials namely zinc oxide eugenol and Endoflas FS with or without the incorporation of Triclosan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study consisted of four groups, with 15 samples in each group: group I (zinc oxide eugenol paste), group Ia (zinc oxide eugenol paste + 2.5% Triclosan), group II (Endoflas FS), and group IIa (Endoflas FS + 2.5% Triclosan). A double layer agar well diffusion test was used to evaluate the antibacterial activity against Enterococcus faecalis. The zones of microbial inhibition were measured at the end of 24 hours, 6th day, and 29th day. RESULTS: On intergroup comparison, the difference in the antibacterial activity was found to be highly significant (p < 0.001). Among the various groups evaluated, group IIa showed the highest antibacterial activity against E. faecalis followed by group II, group Ia, and the least activity being shown by group I throughout the experimental periods. On intragroup comparison at different time intervals, a maximum zone of inhibition was seen at 24 hours with a p value < 0.05 in all the tested groups. CONCLUSION: Incorporation of 2.5% triclosan into zinc oxide eugenol and Endoflas FS enhanced the antimicrobial activity of both the root canal filling materials with lasting antimicrobial activity even at the end of the 29th day. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The antimicrobial efficacy of a root canal filling material is an ideal requirement, which will help in combating the residual microflora present in the root canal system following chemomechanical preparation. The addition of an antimicrobial agent such as triclosan to the root canal filling materials, enhances their antimicrobial efficacy significantly and thus, rendering the pulpectomy-treated tooth with a better prognosis. OBJECTIVE: PTFE tape, which is commonly used as plumber's tape is an inorganic, non-fibrous, ribbon like material. The aim of this study was to evaluate PTFE tape as endodontic spacer material and to compare it with commonly used spacer material that is cotton, in primary teeth. STUDY DESIGN: Seventeen children undergoing pulpectomy of lower second primary molar bilaterally were included in the study. Cotton and PTFE tape were placed as spacers on each side randomly. Samples were taken from the access cavity at baseline and after seven days to check for microbial leakage. Spacer materials were also checked for microbial contamination. RESULTS: The results revealed that there was a significant increase in the bacterial colony count after seven days in cotton group. The access cavities were also positive for microbial leakage in the cotton group where the spacers showed positive growth. In PTFE group only two samples showed microbial contamination of spacer and out of two only one sample showed contamination of access cavity along with spacer. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that PTFE tape performed better than cotton as endodontic spacer material. Thus, PTFE tape can be recommended as an endodontic spacer material as an alternative to cotton in primary teeth.

BACKGROUND: Over a period of the past few years' episodes of dental trauma more commonly coronal fractures of anterior teeth are being increasingly reported in children. Fragment reattachment can be considered as a valid treatment option in such situations. However, ideal medium for storage of fragments before reattachment needs to be explored. AIM: To compare the fracture resistance of incisor tooth fragments stored in four storage media: Dry air, milk, coconut water, or egg white before reattaching them with G-aenial Universal Flo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight freshly extracted maxillary incisors were divided into four groups. Teeth were then sectioned, and fragments were stored in dry air (Group I), milk (Group II), coconut water (Group III), and egg white (Group IV). The fragments were reattached using simple reattachment technique and tested on the Universal Testing Machine. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey's test. RESULTS: There was statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) in fracture resistance values between the groups. The highest fracture resistance value was demonstrated by Group II, whereas least fracture resistance values were observed in Group IV. CONCLUSION: Along with milk, coconut water being tested for the first time can be considered a viable alternative.

BACKGROUND: GIC is the most commonly used restorative material in pediatric dentistry since it has got various advantages like fluoride release, anticariogenic property and chemical adhesion to tooth but a major disadvantage is its contraindication in posterior teeth because of poor mechanical properties. AIM: The purpose of this study is a modest attempt to explore the influence of the addition of 8% hydroxyapatite to conventional GIC on its compressive strength when immersed in different storage media and antibacterial activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and twenty six pellets of the specific dimension of 6 x 4 mm were prepared and divided into 6 groups and were immersed in deionized water, artificial saliva, lactic acid solution respectively for three hours everyday over 30 days test period. The compressive strength was measured by using a universal testing machine (AG-50kNG) at cross head of 1mm(2)/min and strength was determined after 1 day, 7 days, 30 days respectively and the antibacterial activity evaluated against Streptococcus mutans strain in brain heart infusion broth using serial dilution method. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Group wise comparisons were made by one-way ANOVA followed by post-hoc Tukey's test, Intergroup comparison was done with Mann-Whitney test. RESULTS: GIC±HAp showed significantly greater antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans when compared to GIC group. There was no statistically significant change in the compressive strength among the groups except for group 3 and group 6 when immersed in lactic acid had shown significant difference at the end of 24 hours. CONCLUSION: The addition of 8% hydroxyapatite to GIC showed marked increased in the antibacterial activity of the conventional GIC against caries initiating organism without much increase in the compressive strength of the GIC when immersed in the different storage media.

RESUMO

Odontogenic anomalies can occur as a result of conjoining or twinning defects. This article reports the case of fusion in a 10-year-old boy in relation to the primary maxillary right incisors. Clinicoradiographic examination revealed the presence of triple teeth, ie, fusion between the maxillary right incisors along with a supernumerary tooth on the labial surface. The offending triple tooth was extracted under local anesthesia. The extracted tooth was sectioned using a hard tissue microtome at three levels-the coronal, middle root, and apical levels, respectively-and these sections were visualized under a stereomicroscope. Based on the histologic findings, a final diagnosis of fusion was confirmed. A brief review of the literature on triple teeth is also presented.

RESUMO

Whenever nature diverts from the "normal or usual" it gives rise to something called "abnormal or unusual," which we call "a Disorder". Fusion of two teeth is a common developmental disorder that is seen by a clinician. However, bilateral fusion along with Talon's cusp is very rarely seen and reported in literature. This article describes a rare case of the bilateral fusion of permanent mandibular central and lateral incisors, along with presence of Talon's cusp on the left fused teeth.
