RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic turned the world upside down and highlighted multiple sources of trauma inherent in the role of dean or director of an academic nursing unit. METHOD: Experienced nursing deans (n = 3) identify common sources of trauma for nursing deans and directors, including a case example of traumatizing events and circumstances triggered by the pandemic. The concept of trauma-informed self-care is introduced and explored as an approach to achieving the goal of resilience and posttraumatic growth. RESULTS: Based on the Trauma-Informed Self-Care Measure-Revised, specific strategies for nursing deans and directors are recommended in three broad categories: (1) use of organizational resources; (2) observance of organizational protocols for employee support; and (3) dedication to stress management and work-life balance activities. CONCLUSION: To be a positive role model for faculty, staff, and students, nursing deans and directors would benefit from taking a trauma-informed approach to caring for themselves and others. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The first 2 years of a child's life are a particularly critical time period for obesity prevention. AIM: An increasing amount of research across the world is aimed at understanding factors that impact early childhood obesity and developing interventions that target these factors effectively. With this growing interest, new and interdisciplinary research teams are developing to meet this research need. Due to rapid growth velocity during this phase of the lifespan, typical assessments used in older populations may not be valid or applicable in infants, and investigators need to be aware of the pros and cons of specific methodological strategies. METHODS: This paper provides an overview of methodology available to assess obesity-related factors in the areas of anthropometry and body composition, nutrient intake, and energy expenditure in infants aged 0-2 years. RESULTS: Gold standard measures for body composition, such as dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) or other imaging techniques, are costly, require highly trained personnel, and are limited for research application. Nutrient intake methodology primarily includes surveys and questionnaires completed via parent proxy report. In terms of energy expenditure, methods of calorimetry are expensive and may not differentiate between different activities. Questionnaires or physical activity sensors offer another way of energy expenditure assessment. However, questionnaires have a certain recall bias, while the sensors require further validation. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, in addition to understanding the pros and cons of each assessment tool, researchers should take into consideration the experience of the interdisciplinary team of investigators, as well as the cost and availability of measures at their institution.

RESUMO

Through its publications, typically the catalogs and departmental materials, an institution establishes contractual obligations between it and students. While faculty are expected to keep current on policy changes, responsibility for knowing requirements ultimately remains with students. Faculty cannot be held personally liable for negligent, irresponsible, or capricious behavior of students. By keeping complete and accurate notes of advising and counseling sessions, faculty can avoid future disputes as well as protect themselves against claims of erroneous advising. Deans need to work closely with faculty and students to improve communication and to ensure that all know their rights. Clear communication will oftentimes avoid legal tangles.

RESUMO

Many institutions need to employ GTAs, and students need the teaching experience that working as a GTA offers. Some recommendations to support a positive outcome are as follows: (1) GTAs should not make up a significantly large percentage of the total clinical faculty employed. Yet within reasonable limits, employ GTAs, wherever possible; (2) evaluate GTAs' performance on an ongoing as well as summative basis to be sure that they are meeting expectations set for providing instruction; and (3) hire new faculty members who worked previously as a GTA or in similar roles to ensure faculty succession with educators who are clinical experts.

RESUMO

Many new nursing leaders assuming deanships, assistant deanships, or interim deanships have limited education, experience, or background to prepare them to deal with workplace stress. To assist new deans and those aspiring to be deans, the authors of this department offer survival tips based on their personal experiences and insights. They address common issues such as time management, handling workplace bullying, and negotiating deadlines and assignments. The authors welcome counterpoint discussions with readers.
