Gastrointestinal parasites are important, since they can cause a decrese in the performance of swine. The occurrence of parasites in pig farms can create economic losses such as reduction in the value of carcasses and increasing expenses with medicines and veterinary assistance. This study aimed at investigating the occurrence of intestinal parasites in different phases of production reared pigs in intensive prodution systems in the western region of the State of Santa Catarina. A total of 403 fecal samples were analyzed, of which 51.86% were positive for one or more parasites in different phases of production. Finishing pigs had the highest prevalence of parasites (60.19%) followed by nursery pigs (55.44%), pigs in breading sows (50.49%), and suckling piglets (40.81%). Strongylida parasites had higher occurrence (28.78%), and were also the most frequent in the finishing, breading sows, and nursery phases. Coccidia were more occurrent in suckling piglets. This study highlights the need of implementing suitable antiparasitic control measures in all phases of swine production associated with a surveillance system for the diagnosis of endoparasite infection in pigs. Our results demonstrate that endoparasites are highly occurring in pigs, even in intensive system animals on technified farms.(AU)

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: It has been demonstrated that periodontitis induces systemic inflammation, which may impair endothelial function leading to increased cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of simvastatin on systemic inflammatory markers and endothelial dysfunction induced by periodontitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Wistar rats were subjected to ligature-induced experimental periodontitis. Eight days after the procedure, the ligature and sham groups were randomly assigned to receive simvastatin or vehicle once a day until the 14th day, when the effects of acetylcholine and sodium nitroprusside on blood pressure were evaluated. Blood samples were collected and evaluated for plasma interleukin-6C, -reactive protein and lipids. The maxilla and mandible were removed for bone loss analysis. RESULTS: Simvastatin treatment reduced systemic inflammation and endothelial dysfunction induced by periodontitis. Furthermore, simvastatin improved the blood lipid profile and reduced alveolar bone loss. CONCLUSION: Simvastatin treatment, in addition to the improvement on serum lipid profile, may reduce other predictors of cardiovascular events associated with periodontitis.

RESUMO

Several studies have suggested that communities associated with artificial substrata support more non-indigenous species (NIS) than natural habitats, and may function as corridors for their expansion. Our study focused on the role of substrate type, timing and duration of submersion as determinants of fouling assemblage. We used plates made of basalt, concrete or fibreglass, to assess early, i.e., 3 months, and late, i.e., 12 months, succession in benthic communities. To assess spatial and temporal variability of the results, sampling was performed at 2 locations and the experiment was repeated in two seasons of the year. Our results showed that the timing and duration of submersion affected the number and percent cover of natives and NIS, as well as assemblage composition. Moreover, the present study showed no support for the hypothesis that marine NIS are more abundant on artificial substrata, as neither of the two artificial substrata tested supported a greater number of NIS compared to basalt (the natural substratum). Overall, fibreglass presented the most different benthic assemblage composition, supporting the fact that the extent and nature of the observed differences varied not only between natural and artificial substrata, but also according to the type of artificial habitat considered. Thus, our results are in agreement with previous studies that stated that appropriate strategies for environmental management should integrate ecological assessment in order to maintain natural patterns of distribution and abundance of organisms, scales of variability and relevant ecological processes.

RESUMO

This study aimed to determine the LD50, toxic effects on organogenesis/fetal-development, physical aspects, and developmental/neurobehavioral reflexes of litters previously exposed to Cecropia glazioui SNETHL (Cg) extract during the entire gestational period. Swiss mice were submitted to doses of 0.5, 1.0, 2.5 and 5.0 g/Kg/p.o. Female rats received 1.0 g/Kg/day of Cg extract (G1, n = 10) or 1.0 mL/Kg/day of deionized water (G2, n = 10) during pregnancy. The number of successful gestations, pregnant females weight and born/dead-born offsprings were evaluated. Physical development (offspring weight; fluff and hair appearing; ear unsticking and opening; incisor teeth eruption; eyes opening; testis descent; vagina opening; rearing frequency; uprightness latency and negative geotaxis) and the sleeping time (30 mg/Kg/i.p. sodium pentobarbital assay) were also observed. Open field assay evaluated the developmental/neurobehavioral reflexes of pups. LD50 was higher than 5.0 g/Kg. The extract did not affect the gestation number, born/dead-born offspring number and the female weight during pregnancy. The weight and the physical development of both genders pups were not affected (p > 0.05), but the uprightness latency and the negative geotaxis reflexes were enhanced and the rearing frequency decreased (p < 0.05). Ambulation, cleaning activity, sleeping time, and immobility were not affected (p > 0.05). We concluded that Cg extract showed low toxicity to pregnant rats and their litters.

RESUMO

The aim of the present study is to test for possible associations between the C-1291G polymorphism in the alpha2A-adrenergic receptor gene (ADRA2A) with tobacco smoking and alcohol dependence. The genotype and allele frequencies were compared in three groups of European-derived Brazilian males: individuals with co-occurrence of tobacco smoking and alcohol dependence (N = 110), with tobacco smoking (N = 121) and controls (N = 114). The frequency of the G allele was higher in the group with both conditions, intermediate among subjects with smoking, and lower among controls (chi(2) = 8.00; p = 0.02). The chi(2) partitioning did not reveal significant differences between the sample with the two conditions and the sample of smokers (chi(2) = 0.82; p = 0.36). Combining both groups, the difference to the non-smoking controls is higher than the one observed in the three-groups analysis (chi(2) = 7.18; p = 0.007). The results suggest a role for the ADRA2A C-1291G polymorphism, notably the G allele, in the predisposition to tobacco smoking. The influence of the ADRA2A gene in nicotine and other substance dependencies should be more extensively assessed in future studies.

RESUMO

The T allele of the C825T polymorphism in the G-protein beta(3) subunit gene (GNB3) is related to the increase of signal transduction by the G-protein. G-proteins are intermediary paths in signal transduction from receptors involved in mood regulation and substance dependence. We studied the C825T polymorphism in individuals with (i) alcohol and nicotine dependence (n = 109), (ii) nicotine dependence only (n = 117) and (iii) non-dependent controls (n = 108). We also tested for possible associations with psychiatric comorbidities among alcohol-dependent individuals. No differences were detected for allele and genotype frequencies in individuals with or without dependencies. Alcohol-dependent individuals with the heterozygous genotype presented more frequently major depressive disorder (chi(2) = 12.34; p = 0.002). These findings, taken together with other studies suggesting an influence of the C825T polymorphism in major depressive disorder, support the hypothesis of the involvement of G-proteins in mood regulation.

RESUMO

To evaluate the mitotic stability of Triticum aestivum x Thinopyrum ponticum derivatives (BC(2)F(7) and BC(2)F(5) doubled haploids), chromosome counting by both conventional and immunostaining techniques, and measurement of DNA content were performed. The wheat progenitor line, PF 839197, the wheat recurrent parent CEP 19 and the control Chinese Spring were also investigated. In the hybrid derivatives, chromosome number ranged from 2n=36 to 60, with a predominance of chromosome numbers higher than 2n=42, that was confirmed by determination of nuclear DNA content. Chinese Spring' and PF 839197 were stable, but CEP 19 showed chromosome number variation (20%). Analyses of non-pretreated cells revealed the presence of anaphase bridges, lagging chromatids, chromosome fragments and micronuclei. Immunostaining with an antibody recognizing histone H3 phosphorylated showed dicentric chromatids forming anaphase bridges and pericentromeric phosphorylation at centric chromosome fragments but not at lagging chromatids. The possible causes of the observed mitotic instability are discussed.

RESUMO

Isolates of Bipolaris sorokiniana were analyzed by random-amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) techniques to determine the amount of intraspecific genetic variability and to study host-pathogen interactions. Ten isolates originated from different regions of Brazil were examined. Plants of the wheat cultivars BR8, BH1146 (original host) and IAC-5 Maringá, classified as resistant, moderately resistant or susceptible to B. sorokiniana, respectively, were inoculated with these 10 isolates. Twenty-seven isolates were recovered from these cultivars and were analyzed by RAPD assay and compared to the RAPD of the original 10 isolates. According to the RAPD profiles there was a high level of genetic variability among the isolates. We detected 69 polymorphic fragments, ranging from 1.6 to 0.54 kb, in the original 10 isolates; 57 fragments with sizes between 1.98 and 0.38 kb from the isolates recovered from BH1146; 47 polymorphic bands, ranging from 1.96-0.54 kb, were detected in the isolates from BR8 and 32 fragments between 1.98 and 0.42 kb in isolates were recovered from IAC-5 Maringá. The number of polymorphic fragments varied, even for the same isolate, when the isolates were recovered from different cultivar hosts

RESUMO

A case of a large aneurysm of the middle cerebral artery that was treated by resection of the aneurysm sac and reconstruction of the vessel is presented. The middle cerebral artery was reconstructed using a graft from the superficial temporal artery (STA). Cerebral vessel reconstructions are usually carried out with veins as grafts. This paper shows the possibility of using the STA as a graft. When a vessel reconstruction is contemplated, the skin flap should be planned in order to save the STA.

RESUMO

The case of a 24-year-old man with progressive visual loss due to optochiasmatic arachnoiditis is presented. The cause of the arachnoiditis was subarachnoidal bleeding due to rupture of an internal carotid artery aneurysm. The aneurysm was clipped 5 years after the first episode of bleeding. The diagnosis of optochiasmatic arachnoiditis was confirmed during the operation. This case is presented in order to discuss the causes, the symptoms and the therapeutical possibilities of this rare condition.

Positive myocardial imaging was undertaken on 120 unselected patients admitted to a coronary care unit with clinical suspicion of acute myocardial infarction. Multipurpose mobile gamma-cameras were used for serial imaging after administration of 99mtechnetium-labelled imidodiphosphonate, a low-cost radiopharmaceutical that is 97% specific for myocardial necrosis, with myocardial uptake and blood clearance most suitable for myocardial imaging. The sensitivty of detection was 94% for patients whose infarction was unequivocal on the ECG; when the presence of raised enzyme concentrations was also used as a criterion for myocardial necrosis, the overall sensitivity for all 120 patients remained 94%. In 73 patients (61%), whose ECGs were unhelpful or difficult to interpret, scintigraphy allowed infarction to be diagnosed in 11 (15%) and to be excluded in five (7%). In 32 (44%) of this group whose ECGs were totally uninterpretable due to previous myocardial damage or disorders of electrical activation, scintigraphy provided confirmation of a diagnosis that otherwise rested only on whether enzyme concentrations were raised. Myocardial imaging is thus a useful technique that permits more definite diagnosis in patients for whom ECG and enzyme data are uncertain.
