RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Identifying the attitude of young adults towardschild abuse has a significant role in sensitizing them to theissue, which would bring about a positive change in our society at large. This study aims to assess young adults' attitudes towards child abuse and find the association between their attitudes and the selected socio-demographic variables. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey was carried out in the community of Udupi district, Karnataka, among 200 young adults. They were assessed by a self-report attitude scale and a socio-economic status scale. RESULTS: The majority of the respondents (98.0%) had a negative attitude towards child abuse. 59% believed that most of the abuse was perpetrated by people known to the children, and 72.5% strongly agreed that disciplining children can be achieved through dialogue. 44.5% of the respondents believed that society is not taking an active role in child protection. CONCLUSION: Studying people's attitudes on a social issue creates awareness. This study provided insight into young adults' awareness of the importance of child protection, as expressed by their negative outlook towards child abuse.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Students at schools may need first aid due to illness or accident. Therefore, teachers at school should know first aid measures and be able to put them into practice. The aim of this study is to assess awareness regarding first aid training among primary school teachers. METHODS: Subjects were 150 primary school teachers from nine schools in the Udupi district of Karnataka. They were assessed by predesigned questionnaire proforma, after which each teacher was interviewed and responses were discussed separately in smaller groups. RESULTS: Of the subjects, 11.3% felt that first aid is important and 87.7% said that it is very important and wanted to learn first aid. About a third (30.2%) of the teachers knew some basic treatments for minor emergencies but they didn't recognize such treatments were called first aid. Most of the subjects (69.8%) were unfamiliar with the expression "first aid". CONCLUSION: First aid training should be included in the teacher training curriculum, and such training should be updated regularly.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Stress is an unavoidable part of our life. Certain amount of stress is needed for our survival. Stress is one of the factors, which affects the health and eating habits of a person. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to compare the perceived stress among professional and nonprofessional undergraduate students and to find out the relationship between eating behavior and perceived stress of undergraduate students. METHODS: A comparative descriptive study was conducted from November 2017 to April 2018, among 400 undergraduate students from selected professional and nonprofessional colleges in Udupi District, Karnataka. Students were recruited using proportionate sampling technique. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire after obtaining informed consent of the study participants. RESULTS: Statistically significant difference was found in perceived stress of professional and nonprofessional students (Z = -2.397, P = 0.017). There was a weak positive correlation between perceived stress and uncontrolled eating of professional students (ρ= 0.162, P = 0.022) and nonprofessional students (ρ= 0.183, P = 0.009). There was no association found between perceived stress and selected demographic variables such as age, gender, study course, year of study, type of family, and occupation of parents (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Perceived stress of professional students is more compared to nonprofessional students. Uncontrolled eating behavior is influenced by increase in stress, and perceived stress is independent of demographic variables.

RESUMO

Diabetes mellitus is a disorder in which blood sugar (glucose) levels are abnormally high because the body does not produce enough insulin to meet its needs. Post-prandial hyperglycemia (PPHG) is an independent risk factor for the development of macro vascular complications. It is now recognized that normalizing post-prandial blood glucose is more difficult than normalizing fasting glucose. Potassium channels are the most widely distributed type of ion channel and are found in virtually all living organisms. The function of KATP channels is best understood in pancreatic beta cells, the membrane potential of which is responsive to external glucose concentration. Beta cells show a remarkably complex electrical bursting behavior in response to an increase in glucose level. Nateglinide and Glimepiride are a class of insulin secretagog agents that lowers blood glucose levels by stimulating insulin secretion from the pancreas. These compounds interact with the ATP-sensitive potassium (K+ATP) channel in pancreatic beta cells. However, the side effects of these drugs overpass their uses, and the need to identify compounds with less adverse effects is exigent. In our research study, we used the natural compound ellagic acid, which is an already proven anti-carcinogen, anti-mutagen, and anticancer initiator, for its anti-diabetic activity in comparison to the two commercial drugs (Nateglinide and Glimepiride). The drugs and the compounds were docked to the ATP-dependent potassium channel and their energy value showed that the compound had higher binding value than the commercial drugs. Then an ADME/Tox analysis for the compound was carried out which showed that ellagic can be a possible lead molecule.
