RESUMO

The transition from old space to new space along with increasing commercialization has a major impact on space flight, in general, and on electric propulsion (EP) by ion thrusters, in particular. Ion thrusters are nowadays used as primary propulsion systems in space. This article describes how these changes related to new space affect various aspects that are important for the development of EP systems. Starting with a historical overview of the development of space flight and of the technology of EP systems, a number of important missions with EP and the underlying technologies are presented. The focus of our discussion is the technology of the radio frequency ion thruster as a prominent member of the gridded ion engine family. Based on this discussion, we give an overview of important research topics such as the search for alternative propellants, the development of reliable neutralizer concepts based on novel insert materials, as well as promising neutralizer-free propulsion concepts. In addition, aspects of thruster modeling and requirements for test facilities are discussed. Furthermore, we address aspects of space electronics with regard to the development of highly efficient electronic components as well as aspects of electromagnetic compatibility and radiation hardness. This article concludes with a presentation of the interaction of EP systems with the spacecraft.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of an active inflammatory process in the liver on Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MR imaging in patients with different degrees of fibrosis/cirrhosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Overall, a number of 91 patients (61 men and 30 women; mean age 58 years) were included in this retrospective study. The inclusion criteria for this study were Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI of the liver and histopathological evaluation of fibrotic and inflammatory changes. T1-weighted VIBE sequences of the liver with fat suppression were evaluated to determine the relative signal change (RE) between native and hepatobiliary phase (20min). In simple and multiple linear regression analyses, the influence of liver fibrosis/cirrhosis (Ishak score) and the histopathological degree of hepatitis (Modified Hepatic Activity Index, mHAI) on RE were evaluated. RESULTS: RE decreased significantly with increasing liver fibrosis/cirrhosis (p < 0.001) and inflammation (mHAI, p = 0.004). In particular, a correlation between RE and periportal or periseptal boundary zone hepatitis (moth feeding necrosis, mHAI A, p = 0.001) and portal inflammation (mHAI D, p < 0.001) was observed. In multiple linear regression analysis, both the degree of inflammation and the degree of fibrosis were significant predictors for RE (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that the MR-based hepatic enhancement index RE is not only influenced by the degree of fibrosis, but also by the degree of inflammation.

RESUMO

We present high-resolution photoelectron spectra on the A15-type conventional superconductor V 3Si, where-for the first time-both singularities of the BCS density of states can be resolved by photoemission spectroscopy (PES). With a transition temperature of about T(c) approximately 17 K the gap Delta(gap) of this compound has a magnitude of approximately 5 meV. A measurement by PES on this small energy scale requires a very high energy resolution (DeltaE less, similar5 meV) and sample temperatures significantly below T(c).

RESUMO

Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV1) and caprine herpesvirus 1 (CapHV1) are useful models to study virus-host interactions, as well as pathogenicity and latency, when comparing the outcome of infection in the natural and the foreign hosts. Molecular seroepidemiological analyses revealed that cross-reacting antibodies were mainly induced by glycoprotein gI (gB analogue), by the major capsid protein and by nonstructural proteins, whereas the most virus-specific antibodies were elicited by glycoproteins gIII and gIV. These glycoproteins, especially gIII (gC analogue), might therefore play an important role in the virus-host-interactions. As a basis for further studies, we re-evaluated observations concerning experimental infections with BHV1 and CapHV1 in the natural and the foreign hosts. All parameters indicated that both viruses were able to infect either host, but that the pathogenicity was restricted to the natural host. Latent virus could be reactivated exclusively from cows infected with BHV1. It was possible neither to reactivate BHV1 from goats, nor to reactivate CapHV1 from either species. The experiments indicated that the outcome of infection in the natural and the foreign host is dependent on host and viral factors, whereby gIII is only one important virus component involved. Further investigations in the host and host cell range of BHV1 and CapHV1 will help to clarify the role of factors responsible for virus-host-interactions.
