RESUMO

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the demands that workers face regarding household food-related tasks, such as grocery shopping and cooking. The literature shows that there are differences in these demands by gender, but also based on other sociodemographic characteristics, such as schooling level. The aim of this study was to compare food purchasing and preparation patterns by gender in Chilean workers, before the COVID-19 lockdown and during the first six weeks of lockdown. The study was cross-sectional, and data was collected for the first wave of a multi-country study in April 2020. The sample was composed of 317 participants who were employed during lockdown (67.8% women, mean age of 38.14). Participants answered sociodemographic questions and reported their food purchasing and preparing practices before and during lockdown. Analysis of comparison of proportions was used. On average, during lockdown, men increased their involvement in grocery shopping while women cooked more. Overall, female workers have turned to food-related tasks more often during the pandemic than male workers. This study shows the extent to which workers have changed their degree of involvement in food-related tasks, accounting for conditions such as gender roles, schooling level and working from home. These findings can inform interventions and policies that reinforce advantageous changes brought on by lockdown measures (e.g., home-cooking) to contribute to workers' and their families' food-related well-being during and in the aftermath of the pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Optimal treatment for thymoma with pleural dissemination (TPD) remains unclear. Extended radical resection is the cornerstone for local treatment but the need for pleuro-pneumonectomy is debatable. Cytoreductive surgery with intraoperative hyperthermic intrathoracic chemotherapy (HITHOC) provides an alternative strategy to reduce tumor load and prevent pleural recurrence. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to provide an overview of current literature regarding HITHOC for TPD. METHODS: A systematic literature review (PRISMA) was performed in the EMBASE, MEDLINE, Cochrane and Web of Science databases, resulting in 154 papers selected for screening (PROSPERO: CRD42020208242). Title, abstract, and full-text screening resulted in 13 papers subjected to structured data extraction and methodological quality assessment. One additional case from our department was included. Inclusion criteria were original research reporting on patients diagnosed with TPD; oncological outcome reporting; intraoperative HITHOC; and papers written in English, Dutch or German. Methodological quality was assessed using the Risk-of-Bias (RoB)-2 Tool and the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. RESULTS: HITHOC for TPD was reported in 171 cases. HITHOC-related mortality was absent and morbidity was reported in three cases. Intrathoracic perfusion of a platinum-derivative, often combined with other chemotherapeutic drugs at >40°C for 60 min or longer was always used. Post-HITHOC recurrence was reported in 37/120 cases (31%). In patients with a minimal 1-year follow-up, average time to recurrence was 68.5 months. CONCLUSION: Combining cytoreductive surgery and HITHOC is feasible and safe for TPD. The strong heterogeneity in the literature impedes proper outcome analysis. More research is needed to better understand the additional benefit of HITHOC in the TPD setting.

RESUMO

Aim: Pleural dissemination of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is an extremely rare diagnosis, for which no standard therapy is available. Methods: We describe the successful treatment of a 67-year-old male diagnosed with left-sided intrapleural dissemination of PMP (low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm), 2 years after treatment of abdominal PMP with cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intra-peritoneal chemotherapy. Treatment consisted of extended pleural decortication (ePD) and oxaliplatin-based hyperthermic intrathoracic chemotherapy (HITHOC). The patient is doing well without complications or signs of recurrence, 26 months after thoracic surgery. Conclusion: ePD in combination with HITHOC is a valuable treatment for thoracic PMP.

RESUMO

Objective: We aim to relate Flemish adults' main food information sources (e.g., celebrity chefs, experts) with their dietary behavior. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey among 1115 Flemish adults who regularly cook, measured the food information sources the respondents used to obtain recipes, their dietary intake and dietary restrictions. Ordinal and logistic regression were used to investigate the relation between food media, dietary intake and dietary restrictions. Results: Celebrity chefs were mentioned most often (37%) as main food information source, followed by family and acquaintances (21%) and lifestyle gurus (12%). Using lifestyle gurus as a source of dietary information is associated with more dietary restrictions and a higher intake frequency of plant-based food groups, whereas using celebrity chefs or experts is associated with a different (but less unequivocal vegetarian or healthy) dietary intake. Conclusion: Media icons like lifestyle gurus and celebrity chefs appear to be among people's main sources of food information. There is a significant association between using them as a source of food information and dietary behavior. Further research on the influence of media on diet is required.
