RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: During the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, experiential education became challenging as sites began to cancel scheduled rotations, and the University of Florida College of Pharmacy had to cancel the first advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) block. This was allowable given the excess number of experiential hours built into the curriculum. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY AND SETTING: To meet total program credit hour requirements, a six-credit virtual course was created to mimic an experiential rotation. This course was designed to bridge didactic learning with experiential learning. The course included presentation of patient cases, topic discussions, pharmaceutical calculations, self-care cases, disease state management cases, and career development. FINDINGS: Students provided feedback via a survey containing 23 Likert type questions and four open-ended questions. Most students agreed or strongly agreed that participation in self-care scenarios, small group discussions (calculations and topic discussion), and disease state management cases (preceptor dialogue and verbal defense activities) were valuable learning experiences. The verbal defense portion of the disease management case and the self-care scenarios were the most highly rated learning activities. Peer review activities in the career development assignments were seen as the least beneficial component of the course. SUMMARY: This course allowed students an opportunity to further prepare for APPEs in a unique learning environment. The college was able to identify students requiring additional support during APPEs and provide earlier intervention. Additionally, data supported exploring incorporation of new learning activities into the current curriculum.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A major element of management is the process of hiring employees. The purpose of this brief is to describe the implementation of a human resources learning activity asking students to choose an employee to hire, describe student responses, and explore student perspectives of the activity. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY AND SETTING: An interactive hiring activity was presented to third-year students (n = 386) at two different institutions, with varied classroom settings. Students were provided with candidates' curricula vitae and then completed a student-led interview using scripted questions presented in a PowerPoint format. The activity asked students to hire one candidate from five qualified candidates of varying backgrounds and traits. A Qualtrics survey collected students' individual hiring choice, hiring rationale, participant demographic information, and activity perceptions. Demographics and candidate choice were assessed using descriptive analysis. Open-ended answers were analyzed for frequency of terms, followed by a latent class analysis. FINDINGS: Over 90% of students (n = 386) completed the post-activity survey. Demographic data between student cohorts varied, with only student age similar. Hired candidates differed by institution with one college expressing preference for a specific candidate and the other demonstrating a greater diversity of candidate preferences. Influencing factors on student choice were numerous. Overall, students reported a favorable experience with the activity. SUMMARY: This management hiring activity allowed students to engage in the practice-ready skills of hiring pharmacy technicians in an interactive classroom activity. This activity allowed the educators involved to develop hypotheses about student preferences in hiring for future study.

RESUMO

An ally is defined as one who is associated with another as a helper that provides support and assistance in an ongoing struggle or effort. Pharmacists should be allies to their patients by ensuring optimal health outcomes and by helping their patients achieve therapeutic objectives and goals. However, most colleges of pharmacy are currently not well equipped to train future pharmacists to counsel lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning/queer (LGBTQ) patients. This commentary explores reasons for discrepancies in health care access for LGBTQ patients and how efforts can be advanced to meet the needs of this minority group. Pharmacists require adequate training to provide optimal care for a more diverse patient population and to be both an ally in health and a reassuring supporter for members of the LGBTQ community.
