RESUMO

Shipments of California Navel oranges (Citrus sinensis) (Osbeck)) that are found to be infested with adult bean thrips (Caliothrips fasciatus (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)) upon arrival in Australia either undergo mandatory fumigation with methyl bromide (MeBr) to kill the thrips or are refused entry. Ethyl formate (EtF) mixed with carbon dioxide (CO2) is an effective fumigant for control of various arthropods including but not limited to, thrips, aphids, Pacific spider mites, California red scale, and omnivorous leaf rollers. Dose-mortality curves at 5°C, 10°C, and 15°C were developed for control of adult bean thrips using EtF plus CO2, with 5°C being more effective. In further testing, the efficacy of EtF plus CO2 against adult bean thrips in Navel oranges and the impact on fruit quality after fumigation followed by 5 wk of storage at 5°C and shelf life at 20°C was determined. Fruit fumigated with 31 g/m3 EtF plus CO2 at 5°C for 1 h showed no difference in quality compared with untreated control fruit. Ethyl formate plus CO2 fumigation efficacy was confirmed in a 27.32 m3 sea freight container with eight pallets of packed Navel oranges (load factor 28.69%) and 10,000-15,000 adult bean thrips in each of three replications. Complete control of adult bean thrips was achieved with no negative effects on fruit quality.

UNLABELLED: PURPOSE. Some changes in tissue iron concentration have been reported in animals exposed to electromagnetic fields. In other studies, variations in the haemoglobin level were occasionally observed. In the present experiment, the effects of exposing a rat to a 50 Hz magnetic field (MF) were therefore investigated for the possible induction of anaemia due to changes in iron metabolism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male Brown Norway rats (n=225) were exposed to a sinusoidal 50 Hz MF of 500 microT for 15 weeks. Haematological parameters, differential bone marrow cell counts and sideroblasts were investigated. Blood parameters of iron metabolism were measured. Iron concentration and total iron content were also determined in the spleen and liver, to assess iron storage in these organs. RESULTS: Significant differences between the exposed and control rat were only detected for iron storage in the spleen, and for the percentage of bone marrow cells of the red cell lineage. CONCLUSION: The changes observed were not associated with anaemia during the 15 weeks of MF exposure. However, the decrease in bone marrow cells of the red cell lineage and the changes in iron storage detected at the end of the experiment did not allow the possibility to be ruled out that exposure to 50 Hz MFs may induced delayed biological effects.

RESUMO

Spontaneously leukemic AKR mice were exposed from 6 weeks age to a 50 kV/m electric field 12 hrs./day. In this study, carrying on 50 exposed and 50 sham-exposed mice, like in the two preceding experiments, the exposed group mortality is lightly retarded, and reaches 100% only 10 weeks after the sham-exposed group. These differences are not however statistically significative.
