PIP: Between June 1980 through September 1982 Filshie Clip trial sterilizations were performed at 4 different centers in Malaysia. The success rate is 99.4%. To date only 3 failures have been reported. No ectopic pregnancy occurred in the 3 failures. Most of the women sterilized (50.1%) were between 30-34 years of age; parity in these women is 4. 85.3% of these women have never used a reliable method of contraception prior to sterilization. Only 12.3% of these women have been on the pills before, while 2.4% used IUDs. 94.9% of the sterilizations were performed by minilaparotomy while 3.0% were caesarean. Normal laparoscopy was employed in 1.6% of the subjects. Laparotomy was performed in 0.4% of the subjects. 89.1% of the sterilizations were performed under general anesthesia, while in 10.9% of the cases intravenous sedation and local anesthesia were used. Only minor complications were encountered in 1.8% of the subjects and these were easily overcome. Most of the subjects required hospitalization for 1 day, while 6.0% required 2 days. The experience and other relevant findings are discussed.^ieng
