BACKGROUND: Diabetes, a chronic disease worldwide, may be associated with a poorer prognosis in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). While some antihyperglycemic medications may be beneficial, others may increase the risk of adverse clinical outcomes of COVID-19. We aimed to analyze the effect of antihyperglycemic medications on COVID-19. METHODS: We searched the Web of Science, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, PubMed, and Scopus databases from December 2019 to June 2022 to identify literature related to patients with COVID-19 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) treated with antihyperglycemic medications. RESULTS: 56 studies were included in the analysis. Metformin (OR 0.66; 95% CI 0.58-0.74; p < 0.05), Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1ra) (OR 0.73; 95% CI 0.59-0.91; p < 0.05), and sodium-dependent glucose transporters 2 inhibitor (SGLT 2i) (OR 0.77; 95% CI 0.69-0.87; p < 0.05) were associated with lower mortality risk, while insulin was associated with increased mortality risk (OR 1.40; 95% CI 1.26-1.55; p < 0.05). Meanwhile, metformin (OR 0.65; 95% CI 0.50-0.85; p < 0.05) and GLP-1ra (OR 0.84; 95% CI 0.76-0.94; p < 0.05) were significantly associated with decreased severe manifestation risk. What's more, metformin (OR 0.77; 95% CI 0.62-0.96; p < 0.05), GLP-1ra (OR 0.86; 95% CI 0.81-0.92; p < 0.05), and SGLT 2i (OR 0.87; 95% CI 0.79-0.97; p < 0.05) were also associated with a decreased risk of hospitalization, but insulin were associated with an increased risk of hospitalization (OR 1.31; 95% CI 1.12-1.52; p < 0.05). Nevertheless, the results of the subgroup analyses showed that the effects of different glucose-lowering agents on COVID-19 may be related to in-hospital use or out-hospital use, elderly or non-elderly patients use, and different geography. CONCLUSION: Metformin, GLP-1ra, and SGLT 2i have shown a positive effect on clinical outcomes in COVID-19, particularly in non-elderly individuals. However, insulin use may pose a higher risk, especially in elderly patients, so need with caution. Meanwhile, DPP-4i, TZD, α-GLUi, and sulfonylureas appeared to have a neutral effect. These results need to be validated in future clinical studies.

SIVA-1 has been shown to affect apoptotic processes in various different cell lines, and SIVA-1 significantly contributes to the decreased responsiveness of cancer cells to some chemotherapy agents. However, whether SIVA-1 has potential application in gastric cancer remains unknown. Therefore, the objective of this investigation was to clarify the distinct function of SIVA-1 in chemotherapeutic drug resistance within a living murine model with gastric malignancy, and initially elucidate the underlying mechanisms. In an established multidrug-resistant gastric cancer xenograft mouse model, lentivirus, named Lv-SIVA-1, was injected into xenograft tumors, and increased the mRNA and protein expression of endogenous SIVA-1 in tumors. Immunohistochemical assays of xenograft tumor showed that SIVA-1 was significantly upregulated, and the protein expression levels of SIVA-1 were highly increased, as detected by Western blotting. In addition, we detected the role of SIVA-1 in cell proliferation and cell apoptosis in gastric cancer cells by TUNEL and found that SIVA-1 decreased tumor cell apoptosis and promoted tumor growth in vivo. Using a TMT assay between tumor tissues of experimental and control groups, differentially expressed proteins were examined and three potential biomarkers of multidrug resistance (ARF, MDM2, and p53) were screened. We further investigated the molecular mechanism by which SIVA-1 played an efficient role against chemotherapies and found that overexpressed SIVA-1 leads to increased ARF and MDM2 expression and suppressed expression of p53 in tumor tissue. In conclusion, SIVA-1 plays a significant role in the multidrug resistance of gastric tumors. In addition, overexpressed SIVA-1 positively regulates cell proliferation, adjusts cycle progression, and reduces the response to drug treatment for gastric cancer in an ARF/MDM2/p53-dependent manner. This novel research provides a basis for chemical management of gastric cancer through regulation of SIVA-1 expression.

The availability of effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) has revolutionized the care of people living with HIV (PLHIV). As a result, PLHIV now have a life expectancy comparable with that of the general population. PLHIV are increasingly confronted with age-related comorbidities and geriatric syndromes, including frailty and polypharmacy, which occur at a higher prevalence and set in at an earlier age compared with their uninfected counterparts. The underlying pathophysiology for multimorbidity and polypharmacy are multifactorial, multidimensional and complex. Therefore, regular review and optimization of risk factors to maintain physical function, social and psychological health is of utmost importance. With an ever-growing population of older PLHIV, there is a pressing need to provide holistic care to address these emerging issues. Accelerated aging observed in PLHIV suggests that early involvement of a multidisciplinary team, including geriatricians, and implementation of integrated models of care can potentially improve the care of older PLHIV, who are at increased risk of frailty and complex multimorbidity. This article reviews the current global situation, discusses the challenges involved and suggests approaches to deliver comprehensive care for older PLHIV. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2024; 24: 49-59.

Although observational studies have indicated that plasma lipids are associated with an increased risk of sepsis, due to confounders and reverse causality, the causal relationship remains unclear. This study was designed to assess the causal effects of plasma lipid levels on sepsis. We used a 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) method to evaluate the causal effect of plasma lipids on sepsis. MR analysis employs methods such as inverse variance weighted, MR-Egger regression, weighted median regression (WME), simple mode and weighted mode. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was predominantly utilized to assess causality. Heterogeneity was affirmed by Cochran Q test, while pleiotropy was corroborated by MR-Egger regression analysis. The robustness and reliability of the results were demonstrated through "leave-one-out" sensitivity analysis. Instrumental variables included 226 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), comprising of 7 for triglyceride (TG), 169 for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and 50 for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). The risk of sepsis appeared to increase with rising LDL-C levels, as indicated by the inverse variance weighted analysis (OR 1.11, 95% CI from0.99 to1.24, P = 0.068). However, no causality existed between LDL-C, HDL-C, TG and sepsis. Two-sample MR analysis indicated that increased LDL-C level is a risk factor for sepsis, while TG and HDL-C levels have protective effects against sepsis. However, no significant causal relationship was found between TG, HDL-C, and LDL-C levels and sepsis.

The application of DNA barcoding has been significantly limited by the scarcity of reliable specimens and inadequate coverage and replication across all species. The deficiency of DNA barcode reference coverage is particularly striking for highly biodiverse subtropical and tropical regions. In this study, we present a comprehensive barcode library for woody plants in tropical and subtropical China. Our dataset includes a standard barcode library comprising the four most widely used barcodes (rbcL, matK, ITS, and ITS2) for 2,520 species from 4,654 samples across 49 orders, 144 families, and 693 genera, along with 79 samples identified at the genus level. This dataset also provides a super-barcode library consisting of 1,239 samples from 1,139 species, 411 genera, 113 families, and 40 orders. This newly developed library will serve as a valuable resource for DNA barcoding research in tropical and subtropical China and bordering countries, enable more accurate species identification, and contribute to the conservation and management of tropical and subtropical forests.

When a longwall face approaches the finish-off line, 1 month is normally required to relocate the longwall equipment and seal the longwall panel, during which time the goaf gas atmosphere changes and the risk of spontaneous combustion and gas explosion considerably increases. To minimise the occurrence of these hazards, an improved insight into gas flow dynamics within the longwall panel is essential during the panel sealing-off process. Based on mining conditions of an Australian underground coal mine, three-dimensional computational models were developed and calibrated with onsite gas monitoring data, allowing for evaluating ventilation arrangements and understanding methane dispersion in the longwall workings during the six-stage panel sealing-off process with confidence. The simulation results indicate that nitrogen should be injected on the travel road side at a distance of 120 m behind the longwall face at a rate of 0.75 m3/s and the rear of the travel road should be tightly sealed at the final sealing-off stage, resulting in oxygen levels lowering than 5% in the longwall workings and producing desired panel sealing-off performance. In addition, gas sensors should be employed and positioned at the appropriate locations to reliably monitor goaf atmosphere change. This study sheds improved insights into evaluating ventilation arrangements and understanding gas flow dynamics during the panel sealing-off process and provides critical knowledge of effective proactive goaf inertisation strategies, thus minimising the risk of spontaneous heating and gas explosion and reducing environmental pollution induced by these hazards.

Transition metal chalcogenides, a special two-dimensional (2D) material emerged in recent years, possess unique optoelectronic properties and have been used to fabricate various optoelectronic devices. While it is essential to manufacture multifunctional devices with complex nanostructures for practical applications, 2D material devices present a tendency toward miniaturization. However, the controllable fabrication of complex nanostructures on 2D materials remains a challenge. Herein, we propose a method to create designed three-dimensional (3D) patterns on the MoS2 surface by modulating the interaction between an ultrafast laser and MoS2. Three different nanostructures, including flat, bulge, and craters, can be fabricated through laser-induced surface morphology transformation, which is related to thermal diffusion, oxidation, and ablation processes. The MoS2 field effect transistor is fabricated by ultrafast laser excitation which exhibits enhanced electrical properties. This study provides a promising strategy for 3D pattern fabrication, which is helpful for the development of multifunctional microdevices.

AIMS: To investigate the capability, properties, and molecular mechanism of inulin fermentation by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from Sichuan pickle. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 79 LAB strains were purified from 30 aged Sichuan pickle brine samples, and only 21 Lactiplantibacillus plantarum strains (26.58%, 21/79) derived from 15 samples grew well through utilizing inulin as a carbon source. The fermentation tests through using long-chain inulin (lc-inulin) as a carbon source showed that only 6 L. plantarum strains grew well, while other 15 strains could only utilize short-chain oligofructose (FOS), and thin-layer chromatography analysis evidenced a strain specificity of inulin consumption patterns. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum YT041 is a vigorous inulin fermenter, and whole genome sequencing data revealed that sacPTS1 and fosRABCDXE operons might be associated with the fermentation of FOS and lc-inulin, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The phenotype of inulin consumption is commonly present in LAB from Sichuan pickle, which is strain-specific and largely depends on their specific ecological niche and degree of polymerization.

Fluorescence from organic dyes can be applied in many research fields such as imaging, bio-sensing and diagnosis. One shortcoming of fluorescence imaging is the limitation in emission intensity. Amplification of fluorescence signals can be achieved by the enhancement of localized electromagnetic fields. Metallic nanoparticles are widely applied to produce plasmon resonance, but they cause thermal damage to fragile bio-materials. In this study, we propose a method for nanoparticle-free fluorescence enhancement by ultrafast laser-induced cavitation bubbles in organic dye solutions. Fluorescence enhancement without the use of nanoparticles prevents potential hazards including thermal effects and biotoxicity. In order to achieve fluorescence enhancement in neat dye solution, cavitation bubbles were induced by focusing an 800 nm ultrafast laser beam. Another 400 nm laser beam was used to pump the gain medium. Fluorescence enhancement was observed in various dye solutions. The intensity and spectra of the fluorescence emission can be controlled by changing the power and focus of the excitation laser. According to time-resolved microscopy and simulation results, the cavity formed by the laser-induced bubbles results in the enhancement of the localized electromagnetic field and induces the amplification of the fluorescence signal. The bubble-enhanced fluorescence emission was used for imaging of protein crystals without causing thermal damage to the samples. This study provides an effective method for bio-compatible fluorescence enhancement and has application prospects in fields such as bio-imaging.

Nanotechnology has attracted wide research attention in constructing functional devices, including integrated circuits, transparent electrodes, and flexible actuators. Bottom-up fabrication is an important approach for functional structure manufacture, however, the controllable fabrication of complex architectures for practical applications has long been a challenge. Here, a novel strategy of laser plasmonic fabrication based on glue molecule modulation is proposed that can assemble metal nanocrystals into interconnected pattern networks. The plasmonic response of nanocrystals is adjustable with molecule modulation, which is a benefit for the effective formation of laser-induced localized oscillating electrons. The further decomposition of molecules and the movement of nanocrystal surface atoms can achieve the coalescence of assembled nanocrystals. It demonstrates that complex architectures can be controllably constructed by molecule level modulation. Through molecule-assisted laser plasmonic fabrication, the functional nanocrystals with enhanced photothermal capacity can be used for information encryption and soft machinery. This work expands the knowledge of bottom-up fabrication and provides a method for designing functional nanocrystals for a wide range of applications.

Intelligent sensors have attracted substantial attention for various applications, including wearable electronics, artificial intelligence, healthcare monitoring, and human-machine interactions. However, there still remains a critical challenge in developing a multifunctional sensing system for complex signal detection and analysis in practical applications. Here, we develop a machine learning-combined flexible sensor for real-time tactile sensing and voice recognition through laser-induced graphitization. The intelligent sensor with a triboelectric layer can convert local pressure to an electrical signal through a contact electrification effect without external bias, which has a characteristic response behavior when exposed to various mechanical stimuli. With the special patterning design, a smart human-machine interaction controlling system composed of a digital arrayed touch panel is constructed to control electronic devices. Based on machine learning, the real-time monitoring and recognition of the changes of voice are achieved with high accuracy. The machine learning-empowered flexible sensor provides a promising platform for the development of flexible tactile sensing, real-time health detection, human-machine interaction, and intelligent wearable devices.

Metallic micro/nano structures with special physicochemical properties have undergone rapid development owing to their broad applications in micromachines and microdevices. Ultrafast laser processing is generally accepted as an effective technology for functional structures manufacture, however, the controllable fabrication of specific metallic micro/nano structures remains a challenge. Here, this work proposes a novel strategy of laser induced transient solid-liquid transition to fabricate unique structures. Through modulating the transient state of metal from solid to liquid phase using the initial pulse excitation, the subsequent ultrafast pulse-induced recoil pressure can suppress the plasma emission and removal of liquid phase metals, resulting in the controllable fabrication of coffee-ring structures. The solid-liquid transition dynamics, which related with the transient reflectivity and plasma intensity, are revealed by established two temperature model coupled with molecular dynamics model. The coffee-ring structure exhibits tunable structure color owing to various optical response, which can be used for color printing with large scale and high resolution. This work provides a promising strategy for fabricating functional micro/nano structures, which can greatly broaden the potential applications.

Nodular goiter has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. Clinically, there has been a burgeoning interest in nodular goiter due to the risk of progression to thyroid cancer. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effect of Chinese medicine (CM) in nodular goiter. Articles were systematically retrieved from databases, including PubMed, Web of Science and China National Knowledge Infrastructure. New evidence showed that CM exhibited multi-pathway and multi-target characteristics in the treatment of nodular goiter, involving hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis, oxidative stress, blood rheology, cell proliferation, apoptosis, and autophagy, especially inhibition of cell proliferation and promotion of cell apoptosis, involving multiple signal pathways and a variety of cytokines. This review provides a scientific basis for the therapeutic use of CM against nodular goiter. Nonetheless, future studies are warranted to identify more regulatory genes and pathways to provide new approaches for the treatment of nodular goiter.

A dual-channel inverse synthetic aperture ladar imaging experimental system based on wide-pulse binary phase coded signals and its moving target imaging are introduced. The analysis, simulation, and experimental data processing results of binary phase coded signal Doppler compensation and pulse compression are included. The method of motion phase error estimation based on interferometric processing and the imaging method with small computation in the case of large squint angles are proposed, and the simulation results are presented. The effectiveness of the imaging method is verified by experimental data processing. Doppler frequency curves are estimated based on time-frequency analysis of echo signals, and the coarse compensation of motion phase error is realized. According to the interferometric phase and coherence coefficient of dual-channel echo signals' time-frequency analysis, the coherence of the dual-channel echo signals is checked, and along-track interferometry can be applied to the precise compensation. The stable interferometric phase and increased coherence coefficient of actual dual-channel data imaging results indicate the effectiveness of the motion phase error compensation method proposed. Considering characteristics of inverse synthetic aperture ladar (ISAL) imaging, after dividing echo signals into multiple sub-apertures, range-Doppler algorithm and sub-aperture stitching are adopted, the stitched image is corrected geometrically through Stolt transformation, and the computation is reduced.

BACKGROUND: Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) genes single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been connected with the susceptibility of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but with inconsistent results across the current evidences. The present work was schemed to explore the association between GSTs genes polymorphisms and the NAFLD vulnerability via meta-analysis. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wanfang were retrieved for eligible literatures previous to March 10, 2021. The odds ratio (OR) of the dichotomic variables and the standardized mean difference of quantitative variables with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) were computed to evaluate the strength of the associations. The quality of included studies were assessed via using Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). RESULTS: In total, 7 case-control studies encompassing 804 NAFLD patients and 1362 disease-free controls in this meta-analysis. Ultimately, this analysis included 6, 5 and 5 studies for GSTM1, GSTT1 and GSTP1 polymorphisms, respectively. The pooled data revealed that the GSTs genes SNPs had conspicuous associations with NAFLD susceptibility: for GSTM1, null versus present, OR = 1.46, 95%CI 1.20 to 1.79, P = .0002; for GSTT1, null versus present, OR = 1.34, 95%CI 1.06 to 1.68, P = .01; for GSTP1, Ile/Val or Val/Val versus Ile/Ile, OR = 1.60, 95%CI 1.23 to 2.09, P = .0005. CONCLUSION: This work revealed that the GSTM1 null, GSTT1 null and GSTP1-Val genotypes might be related to increased NAFLD susceptibility.

Two polysaccharides from Carthamus tinctorius L. (CTLP-1 and CTLP-2) were purified, and their structures were analyzed by physical and chemical testing. CTLP-1 had a mass of 5900 Da that was composed of arabinose, glucose, and galactose with a mass molar ratio of 6.7:4.2:1. The backbone of CTLP-1 was →1)-α-GalAp-(1→4)-α-Arap-(1→2)-α-Glup-(4→. CTLP-2 had a mass of 8200 Da that was composed of arabinose, glucose, and galactose with a mass molar ratio of 16.76:4.28:1. The backbone of CTLP-2 was →1)-α-Galp-(2,6 →1)-α-Arap-(4,6 →1)-α-Glup-(3→. Both of them exhibited a high reducing power, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, DPPH radical scavenging activity and ABTS radical scavenging activity, moderate Fe2+ chelating activity and superoxide anion scavenging activity, implying that they might be potential antioxidants.

Two new sesquiterpenoids, curcumanes E (1) and F (2), were isolated from the rhizome of Curcuma longa, and their structures and absolute configurations were examined using extensive spectroscopic analyses and ECD calculations. Interestingly, compounds 1 and 2 are diastereoisomers possessing a rare sesquiterpenoid skeleton that has been reported only once before. Both curcumanes E and F exhibit significant vasorelaxant effects against KCl-induced contraction of rat aortic rings, with EC50 values of 5.10 ± 0.79 and 5.58 ± 1.77 µM, respectively. These findings enrich the data concerning this rare type of sesquiterpenoids and further indicate that these rare sesquiterpenoids can effectively reduce blood pressure.

Tubeimoside-1 (TBMS-1), a natural triterpenoid saponin found in traditional Chinese herbal medicine Bolbostemmatis Rhizoma, is present in numerous Chinese medicine preparations. This review aims to comprehensively describe the pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, toxicity and targeting preparations of TBMS-1, as well the therapeutic potential for cancer treatement. Information concerning TBMS-1 was systematically collected from the authoritative internet database of PubMed, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure applying a combination of keywords involving "tumor," "pharmacokinetics," "toxicology," and targeting preparations. New evidence shows that TBMS-1 possesses a remarkable inhibitory effect on the tumors of the respiratory system, digestive system, nervous system, genital system as well as other systems in vivo and in vitro. Pharmacokinetic studies reveal that TBMS-1 is extensively distributed in various tissues and prone to degradation by the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration, causing a decrease in bioavailability. Meanwhile, several lines of evidence have shown that TBMS-1 may cause adverse and toxic effects at high doses. The development of liver-targeting and lung-targeting preparations can reduce the toxic effect of TBMS-1 and increase its efficacy. In summary, TBMS-1 can effectively control tumor treatment. However, additional research is necessary to investigate in vivo antitumor effects and the pharmacokinetics of TBMS-1. In addition, to reduce the toxicity of TBMS-1, future research should aim to modify its structure, formulate targeting preparations or combinations with other drugs.

BACKGROUND: Sorting and assembly machinery component 50 homolog (SAMM50) gene single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been connected with the susceptibility of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but with inconsistent results across the current evidence. The present work was schemed to explore the association between SAMM50 gene SNPs and NAFLD vulnerability via meta-analysis. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang were retrieved for eligible literature previous to June 10, 2021. The odds ratios (ORs) of the dichotomic variables and the standardized mean difference of quantitative variables with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were computed to evaluate the strength of the associations. The quality of included studies was assessed using Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). RESULTS: In total, 8 case-control studies encompassing 6297 NAFLD patients and 7306 disease-free controls in this meta-analysis. Ultimately, this analysis included 8, 6, and 5 studies for rs2143571, rs3761472, and rs738491 polymorphisms respectively. The pooled data revealed that the 3 polymorphisms had conspicuous associations with NAFLD susceptibility: rs2143571, A vs. G, OR=1.51, 95% CI, 1.37-1.66, P < .01; rs3761472, A vs. G, OR=1.50, 95% CI, 1.35-1.67, P < .01; rs738491, A vs. G, OR=1.51, 95% CI, 1.40-1.63, P < .01. CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis suggests that rs2143571, rs3761472, and rs738491 polymorphisms of the SAMM50 gene are appreciably associated with augmented risk of NAFLD vulnerability. It will provide the latest evidence to support the susceptibility of SAMM50 gene polymorphisms and NAFLD, and provide strategies for the prevention and treatment of NAFLD.

The synthesis of evolutionary biology and community ecology aims to understand how genetic variation within one species can shape community properties and how the ecological properties of a community can drive the evolution of a species. A rarely explored aspect is whether the interaction of genetic variation and community properties depends on the species' ecological role. Here we investigated the interactions among environmental factors, species diversity, and the within-species genetic diversity of species with different ecological roles. Using high-throughput DNA sequencing, we genotyped a canopy-dominant tree species, Parashorea chinensis, and an understory-abundant species, Pittosporopsis kerrii, from fifteen plots in Xishuangbanna tropical seasonal rainforest and estimated their adaptive, neutral and total genetic diversity; we also surveyed species diversity and assayed key soil nutrients. Structural equation modelling revealed that soil nitrogen availability created an opposing effect in species diversity and adaptive genetic diversity of the canopy-dominant Pa. chinensis. The increased adaptive genetic diversity of Pa. chinensis led to greater species diversity by promoting co-existence. Increased species diversity reduced the adaptive genetic diversity of the dominant understory species, Pi. kerrii, which was promoted by the adaptive genetic diversity of the canopy-dominant Pa. chinensis. However, such relationships were absent when neutral genetic diversity or total genetic diversity were used in the model. Our results demonstrated the important ecological interaction between adaptive genetic diversity and species diversity, but the pattern of the interaction depends on the identity of the species. Our results highlight the significant ecological role of dominant species in competitive interactions and regulation of community structure.
