RESUMO

Using static and dynamic density functional theory (DFT) methods with a cluster model of [(Li2CO3)8H]+, the mechanism and kinetics of proton transfer in lithium molten carbonate (MC) were investigated. The migration of proton prefers an inter-carbonate pathway with an energy barrier of 8.0 kcal/mol at the B3LYP/6-31 G(d,p) level, which is in good agreement with the value of 7.6 kcal/mol and 7.5 kcal/mol from experiment and FPMD simulation, respectively. At transition state (TS), a linkage of O-H-O involving O 2p and H 1 s orbitals is formed between two carbonate ions. The calculated trajectory of H indicates that proton has a good mobility in MC, oxygen can rotate around carbon to facilitate the proton migration, while the movement of carbon is very limited. Small variations on geometry and atomic charge were detected on the carbonate ions, implying that the proton migration is a synergetic process and the whole carbonate structure is actively involved. Overall, the calculated results indicate that MC exhibits a low energy barrier for proton conduction in IT-SOFCs.

RESUMO

Using density functional theory method, we have studied the oxygen dissociation in alkali molten carbonate at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level. The calculated energies were then verified by MP4 and CCSD(T). A four-formula cluster (M2CO3)4, M = Li, Na, and K was used to describe the molten carbonate. It was found that the adsorption of oxygen to molten carbonate is of a chemical type and leads to the formation of CO5(2-) in MC, which was confirmed for the first time by DFT calculations. The energy barrier for its dissociation is calculated to be 197.9, 116.7, and 170.3 kJ/mol in the (M2CO3)4 cluster, M = Li, Na, and K, respectively. If the reaction of O2 + 2CO3(2-) → 2CO4(2-) is approximated as a one-step reaction, the activation energy is estimated to be 96.2, 15.1, and 68.6 kJ/mol, respectively. The reaction rate is first order to the pressure of oxygen. Surprisingly, the reaction of oxygen dissociation has the lowest energy barrier in sodium carbonate, which is consistent with the recent experimental findings. It is very clear that the molten carbonate salt has directly participated in the ORR process and plays an important role as a catalyst in the cathode of SOFCs. The oxygen reduction has been facilitated by MC and enhanced cell performance has been observed.

RESUMO

Identification of the existence of pyrocarbonate ion C2O5(2-) in molten carbonates exposed to a CO2 atmosphere provides key support for a newly established bi-ionic transport model that explains the mechanisms of high CO2 permeation flux observed in mixed oxide-ion and carbonate-ion conducting (MOCC) membranes containing highly interconnected three dimensional ionic channels. Here we report the first Raman spectroscopic evidence of C2O5(2-) as an active species involved in the CO2-transport process of MOCC membranes exposed to a CO2 atmosphere. The two new broad peaks centered at 1317 cm(-1) and 1582 cm(-1) are identified as the characteristic frequencies of the C2O5(2-) species. The measured characteristic Raman frequencies of C2O5(2-) are in excellent agreement with the DFT-model consisting of six overlapping individual theoretical bands calculated from Li2C2O5 and Na2C2O5.

RESUMO

(18)O-isotope-labeling studies have led to the conclusion that there exist two major pathways for water oxidation catalyzed by dimeric ruthenium ions of the general type cis, cis-[L2Ru(III)(OH2)]2O(4+). We have proposed that both pathways involve concerted addition of H and OH fragments derived from H 2O to the complexes in their four-electron-oxidized states, i.e., [L2Ru(V)(O)]2O(4+), ultimately generating bound peroxy intermediates that decay with the evolution of O2. The pathways differ primarily in the site of addition of the OH fragment, which is either a ruthenyl O atom or a bipyridine ligand. In the former case, water addition is thought to give rise to a critical intermediate whose structure is L2Ru(IV)(OH)ORu(IV)(OOH)L2(4+); the structures of intermediates involved in the other pathway are less well defined but may involve bipyridine OH adducts of the type L2Ru(V)(O)ORu(IV)(OH)(L(*)OH)L(4+), which could react further to generate unstable dioxetanes or similar endoperoxides. Published experimental and theoretical support for these pathways is reviewed within the broader context of water oxidation catalysis and related reactions reported for other diruthenium and group 8 monomeric diimine-based catalysts. New experiments that are designed to probe the issue of bipyridine ligand "noninnocence" in catalysis are described. Specifically, the relative contributions of the two pathways have been shown to correlate with substituent effects in 4,4'- and 5,5'-substituted bipyridine complexes in a manner consistent with the formation of a reactive OH-adduct intermediate in one of the pathways, and the formation of OH-bipyridine adducts during catalytic turnover has been directly confirmed by optical spectroscopy. Finally, a photosensitized system for catalyzed water oxidation has been developed that allows assessment of the catalytic efficiencies of the complex ions under neutral and alkaline conditions; these studies show that the ions are far better catalysts than had previously been assumed based upon reported catalytic parameters obtained with strong oxidants in acidic media.

RESUMO

The diimide perylene motif exhibits a dramatic intensity reversal between the 0 --> 0 and 0 --> 1 vibronic bands upon pi-pi stacking; this distinct spectral property has previously been used to measure folding dynamics in covalently bound oligomers and synthetic biological hybrid foldamers. It is also used as a tool to assess organization of the pi-stacking, indicating the presence of H- or J-aggregation. The zeroth-order exciton model, often used to describe the optical properties of chromophoric aggregates, is solely a transition dipole coupling scheme, which ignores the explicit electronic structure of the system as well as vibrational coupling to the electronic transition. We have therefore examined the optical properties of gas-phase perylene tetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI) and its chromophoric dimer as a function of conformation to relate the excited-state distributions predicted by exciton theory with that of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). Using ground- and excited-state geometries, the Franck-Condon (FC) factors for the lowest energy molecular nature electronic transition have been calculated and the origin of the intensity reversal of 0 --> 0 and 0 --> 1 vibronic bands has been proposed.

RESUMO

Theoretical studies of CO adsorption on a two-layer Ag(100) film and on a two-layer Ag film on a MgO(100) support are reported. Ab initio calculations are carried at the configuration interaction level of theory using embedding methods to treat the metal-adsorbate region and the extended ionic solid. The metal overlayer is considered in two different structures: where Ag-Ag distances are equal to the value in the bulk solid, and for a slightly expanded lattice in which the Ag-Ag distances are equal to the O-O distance on the MgO(100) surface. The calculated adsorption energy of Ag(100) on MgO(100) is 0.58 eV per Ag interfacial atom; the Ag-O distance is 2.28 A. A small transfer of electrons from MgO to Ag occurs on deposition of the silver overlayer. CO adsorption at an atop Ag site is found to be the most stable for adsorption on the two-layer Ag film and also for adsorption on Ag deposited on the oxide; CO adsorption energies range from 0.12 to 0.19 eV. The CO adsorption energy is reduced for the Ag/MgO system compared to adsorption on the unsupported metal film thereby providing evidence for a direct electronic effect of the oxide support at the metal overlayer surface. Expansion of the Ag-Ag distance in the two-layer system also reduces the adsorption energy.

RESUMO

The highly strained (E,E)-1,3-cycloheptadiene was shown to be a minimum on the potential energy surface; two structural isomers were found at the MP2 level, but multiconfiguration self-consistent field calculations show that only one is a true minimum. The isomerization of (E,E)-1,3-cycloheptadiene was investigated through double bond rotation, and electrocyclic ring closure. The first pathway gives (E,Z)-1,3-cycloheptadiene, with a barrier of 7.2 kcal x mol(-1), and the second pathway gives the trans isomer of bicyclo[3.2.0]hept-6-ene with a barrier of 13.0 kcal x mol(-1). The strain energy of (E,E)-1,3-cycloheptadiene was calculated using homodesmotic reactions and found to be about 96 kcal x mol(-1) whereas that for (E,Z)-1,3-cycloheptadiene was only 38 kcal x mol(-1), implying that the second trans double bond imparts an additional 58 kcal x mol(-1) in strain energy. The trans isomer of bicyclo[3.2.0]hept-6-ene was calculated to have a strain energy of 69 kcal x mol(-1) and a barrier of 27 kcal x mol(-1) for isomerization to (Z,Z)-1,3-cycloheptadiene. Although many of the structures reported here could be described using a single determinant wave function, several could not, making a multireference method necessary for a complete description of the potential energy surface.

RESUMO

The adsorption of H(2)O and its dissociation products, O, H, and OH, on Ag(100) has been studied using an ab initio embedding method. Results at different sites (atop, bridge, and hollow) are presented. The four-fold hollow site is found to be the most stable adsorption site for O, H, and OH, and the calculated adsorption energies are 87.1, 42.7, and 76.2 kcal mol(-1), respectively. The adsorption energy of water at the atop and bridge sites is almost identical with values of 11.1 and 12.0 kcal mol(-1), respectively. The formation of adsorbed OH species by adsorption of water on oxygen-precovered Ag(100) is predicted to be exothermic by 36 kcal mol(-1).

RESUMO

The thermal isomerization of tricyclo[4.1.0.0(2,7)]heptane and bicyclo[3.2.0]hept-6-ene was studied using ab initio methods at the multiconfiguration self-consistent field level. The lowest-energy pathway for thermolysis of both structures proceeds through the (E,Z)-1,3-cycloheptadiene intermediate. Ten transition states were located, which connect these three structures to the final product, (Z,Z)-1,3-cycloheptadiene. Three reaction channels were investigated, which included the conrotatory and disrotatory ring opening of tricyclo[4.1.0.0(2,7)]heptane and bicyclo[3.2.0]hept-6-ene and trans double bond rotation of (E,Z)-1,3-cycloheptadiene. The activation barrier for the conrotatory ring opening of tricyclo[4.1.0.0(2,7)]heptane to (E,Z)-1,3-cycloheptadiene was found to be 40 kcal mol(-1), while the disrotatory pathway to (Z,Z)-1,3-cyclohetpadiene was calculated to be 55 kcal mol(-1). The thermolysis of bicyclo[3.2.0]hept-6-ene via a conrotatory pathway to (E,Z)-1,3-cycloheptadiene had a 35 kcal mol(-1) barrier, while the disrotatory pathway to (Z,Z)-1,3-cyclohetpadiene had a barrier of 48 kcal mol(-1). The barrier for the isomerization of (E,Z)-1,3-cycloheptadiene to bicyclo[3.2.0]hept-6-ene was found to be 12 kcal mol(-1), while that directly to (Z,Z)-1,3-cycloheptadiene was 20 kcal mol(-1).
