RESUMO

Hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) possess remarkable potential for various applications due to their unprecedented properties. However, the scalable production of BNNSs with both expansive surface and high solubility continues to present a significant challenge. Herein, we propose an innovative and efficient two-step method for manufacturing hydroxyl-functionalized BNNSs (OH-BNNSs). Initially, hydroxyl groups are covalently attached to bulk hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) surfaces through H2O2 treatment. Then, the hydroxyl-functionalized h-BN undergoes exfoliation on account of a sudden increase in interlayer gas pressure generated by the vigorous decomposition of H2O2 in alkali solutions, resulting in the creation of OH-BNNSs. This approach produces relatively large flakes with an average dimension of 1.65 µm and a high yield of 45.2%. The resultant OH-BNNSs exhibit remarkable stability and dispersibility in a range of solvents. Their integration into thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) significantly enhances both thermal conductivity and stability, attributed to the excellent compatibility with the resin matrix. This study represents a significant advancement in the functionalization and exfoliation of h-BN, opening new avenues for its promising applications in polymer composites.

RESUMO

In the past decade, adoptive cell therapy with chimeric antigen receptor-T (CAR-T) cells has revolutionized cancer treatment. However, the complexity and high costs involved in manufacturing current adoptive cell therapy greatly inhibit its widespread availability and access. To address this, in situ cell therapy, which directly reprograms immune cells inside the body, has recently been developed as a promising alternative. Here, an overview of the recent progress in the development of synthetic nanomaterials is provided to deliver plasmid DNA or mRNA for in situ reprogramming of T cells and macrophages, focusing especially on in situ CAR therapies. Also, the main challenges for in situ immune cell reprogramming are discussed and some approaches to overcome these barriers to fulfill the clinical applications are proposed.

RESUMO

The increasing number of approved nucleic acid therapeutics demonstrates the potential for the prevention and treatment of a broad spectrum of diseases. This trend underscores the significant impact and promise of nucleic acid-based treatments in the field of medicine. Nevertheless, employing nucleic acids as therapeutics is challenging due to their susceptibility to degradation by nucleases and their unfavorable physicochemical characteristics that hinder delivery into cells. Appropriate vectors play a pivotal role in improving nucleic acid stability and delivering nucleic acids into specific cells. The maturation of delivery systems has led to breakthroughs in the development of therapeutics based on nucleic acids such as DNA, siRNA, and mRNA. Non-viral vectors have gained prominence among the myriad of nanomaterials due to low immunogenicity, ease of manufacturing, and simplicity of cost-effective, large-scale production. Here, we provide an overview of the recent advancements in nanomaterials for nucleic acid delivery. Specifically, we give a detailed introduction to the characteristics of polymers, lipids, and polymer-lipid hybrids, and provide comprehensive descriptions of their applications in nucleic acid delivery. Also, biological barriers, administration routes, and strategies for organ-selective delivery of nucleic acids are discussed. In summary, this review offers insights into the rational design of next-generation delivery vectors for nucleic acid delivery.

RESUMO

The BiOCl0.75I0.25/g-C3N4 nanosheet (BCI-CN) was successfully immobilized on polyolefin polyester fiber (PPF) through the hydrothermal method. The novel immobilized BiOCl0.75I0.25/g-C3N4 nanocomposites (BCI-CN-PPF) were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy EDS, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS) to confirm that BCI-CN was successfully immobilized on PPF with abundant oxygen vacancies reserved. Under simulated solar light irradiation, 100 % of bisphenol A (BPA) with an initial concentration of 10 mg·L-1 was degraded by BCI-CN-PPF (0.2 g·L-1 of BCI-CN immobilized) after 60 min. A similar photocatalytic efficiency of BPA was obtained in the presence of effluent organic matter (EfOM). The photocatalytic degradation of BPA was not affected by EfOM <5 mg-C/L. In comparison, the photocatalytic performance was considerably inhibited by EfOM with a concentration of 10 mg-C/L. Furthermore, photogenerated holes and superoxide radicals predominated in the photocatalytic degradation processes of BPA. The total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiencies of BPA and EfOM were 75.2 % and 50 % in the BCI-CN-PPF catalytic system. The BPA removal efficiency of 94.9 % was still achieved in the eighth cycle of repeated use. This study provides a promising immobilized nanocomposite with high photocatalytic activity and excellent recyclability and reusability for practical application in wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

A novel strain FDN-02 was isolated from a sequencing batch biofilm reactor. FDN-02 was identified as Paracoccus sp., and the Genbank Sequence_ID was MW652628. Comparing with the removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) by bacterium FDN-02 under different growth conditions, the optimal initial pH, carbon source, and C/N ratio were 7.0, sucrose, and 16, respectively. The maximum removal efficiency and rate of NH4+-N were respectively 96.2% and 10.06 mg-N/L/h within 8 h under anoxic condition when the concentration of NH4+-N was 44.87 mg/L. Specifically, 71.9% of NH4+-N was utilized by strain FDN-02 through heterotrophic assimilation to synthetize organic nitrogen, and approximately 24.1% of NH4+-N was lost in the form of gaseous nitrogen without the emission of nitrous oxide. Bacterium FDN-02 was also found to be a denitrifying organism, and nitrate nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen of lower concentrations were removed by denitrification after the enlargement of biomass. Further investigation showed that the biomass after the removal of NH4+-N by strain FDN-02 had resource utilization potential, and the contents of proteins and amino acids were 635 and 192.97 mg/g, respectively, especially for the usage as an alternative nutrient source for livestock and organic fertilizers. This study provided a promising environmentally friendly biological treatment method for the removal of NH4+-N in the wastewater.

RESUMO

Calcium-dependent synaptic vesicle exocytosis is mediated by SNARE complex formation. The transition from the Munc18-1/syntaxin-1 complex to the SNARE complex is catalyzed by the Munc13-1 MUN domain and involves at least two conformational changes: opening of the syntaxin-1 linker region and extension of Munc18-1 domain 3a. However, the relationship and the action order of the two conformational changes remain not fully understood. Here, our data show that an open conformation in the syntaxin-1 linker region can bypass the requirement of the MUN NF sequence. In addition, an extended state of Munc18-1 domain 3a can compensate the role of the syntaxin-1 RI sequence. Altogether, the current data strongly support our previous notion that opening of the syntaxin-1 linker region by Munc13-1 is a key step to initiate SNARE complex assembly, and consequently, Munc18-1 domain 3a can extend its conformation to serve as a template for association of synaptobrevin-2 and syntaxin-1.

RESUMO

We report that lightweight, anisotropic, mechanically flexible, and high performance thermally insulating materials are fabricated by the assembly of graphene oxide (GO) and polyimide (PI). With an appropriate ratio between GO and PI building blocks, the rGO/PI thermally insulating material exhibits hierarchically aligned microstructures with high porosity. These microstructures endow the rGO/PI nanocomposite with low mass density and super-insulating property (extremely low thermal conductivity of 0.012 W m-1 K-1 in the radial direction). Meanwhile, the introduction of PI enhances the mechanical strength and thermal stability of rGO foam. Our rGO/PI nanocomposites as super-insulating foams with a low thermal conductivity are highly attractive for potential thermal insulation applications in aerospace, wearable devices, and energy-efficient buildings.

RESUMO

Graphene-enhanced polymer matrix nanocomposites are attracting ever increasing attention in the electromagnetic (EM) interference (EMI) shielding field because of their improved electrical property. Normally, the graphene is introduced into the matrix by chemical functionalization strategy. Unfortunately, the electrical conductivity of the nanocomposite is weak because the graphene nanosheets are not interconnected. As a result, the electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of the nanocomposite is not as excellent as expected. Interconnected graphene network shows very good electrical conduction property, thus demonstrates excellent electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness. However, its brittleness greatly limits its real application. Here, we propose to directly infiltrate flexible poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) into interconnected reduced graphene network and form nanocomposite. The nanocomposite is superflexible, light weight, enhanced mechanical and improved electrical conductive. The nanocomposite is so superflexible that it could be tied as spring-like sucker. Only 1.07 wt % graphene significantly increases the tensile strengths by 64% as compared to neat PDMS. When the graphene weight percent is 3.07 wt %, the nanocomposite has the more excellent electrical conductivity up to 103 S/m, thus more outstanding EMI shielding effectiveness of around 54 dB in the X-band are achieved, which means that 99.999% EM has been shielded by this nanocomposite. Bluetooth communication testing with and without our nanocomposite confirms that our flexible nanocomposite has very excellent shielding effect. This flexible nanocomposite is very promising in the application of wearable devices, as electromagnetic interference shielding shelter.

RESUMO

Lightweight, high-performance, thermally insulating, and antifrosting porous materials are in increasing demand to improve energy efficiency in many fields, such as aerospace and wearable devices. However, traditional thermally insulating materials (porous ceramics, polymer-based sponges) could not simultaneously meet these demands. Here, we propose a hierarchical assembly strategy for producing nanocomposite foams with lightweight, mechanically flexible, superinsulating, and antifrosting properties. The nanocomposite foams consist of a highly anisotropic reduced graphene oxide/polyimide (abbreviated as rGO/PI) network and hollow graphene oxide microspheres. The hierarchical nanocomposite foams are ultralight (density of 9.2 mg·cm-3) and exhibit ultralow thermal conductivity of 9 mW·m-1·K-1, which is about a third that of traditional polymer-based insulating materials. Meanwhile, the nanocomposite foams show excellent icephobic performance. Our results show that hierarchical nanocomposite foams have promising applications in aerospace, wearable devices, refrigerators, and liquid nitrogen/oxygen transportation.

RESUMO

Electrical stimulation of shape-memory polymers (SMPs) has many advantages over thermal methods; creating an efficient conductive path through the bulk polymers is essential for developing high performance electroactive systems. Here, we show that a three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon nanotube sponge can serve as a built-in integral conductive network to provide internal, homogeneous, in situ Joule heating for shape-memory polymers, thus significantly improving the mechanical and thermal behavior of SMPs. As a result, the 3D nanocomposites show a fast response and produce large exerting forces (with a maximum flexural stress of 14.6 MPa) during shape recovery. We further studied the construction of a double-layer composite structure for bidirectional actuation, in which the shape change is dominated by the temperature-dependent exerting force from the top and bottom layer, alternately. An inchworm-type robot is demonstrated whose locomotion is realized by such bidirectional shape memory. Our large stroke shape-memory nanocomposites have promising applications in many areas including artificial muscles and bionic robots.

RESUMO

The creation of stiff yet multifunctional three-dimensional porous carbon architecture at very low cost is still challenging. In this work, lightweight and stiff carbon foam (CF) with adjustable pore structure was prepared by using flour as the basic element via a simple fermentation and carbonization process. The compressive strength of CF exhibits a high value of 3.6 MPa whereas its density is 0.29 g/cm(3) (compressive modulus can be 121 MPa). The electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness measurements (specific EMI shielding effectiveness can be 78.18 dB·cm(3)·g(-1)) indicate that CF can be used as lightweight, effective shielding material. Unlike ordinary foam structure materials, the low thermal conductivity (lowest is 0.06 W/m·K) with high resistance to fire makes CF a good candidate for commercial thermal insulation material. These results demonstrate a promising method to fabricate an economical, robust carbon material for applications in industry as well as topics regarding environmental protection and improvement of energy efficiency.

RESUMO

The creation of superelastic, flexible three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based architectures is still a great challenge due to structure collapse or significant plastic deformation. Herein, we report a facile approach of transforming the mechanically fragile reduced graphene oxide (rGO) aerogel into superflexible 3D architectures by introducing water-soluble polyimide (PI). The rGO/PI nanocomposites are fabricated using strategies of freeze casting and thermal annealing. The resulting monoliths exhibit low density, excellent flexibility, superelasticity with high recovery rate, and extraordinary reversible compressibility. The synergistic effect between rGO and PI endows the elastomer with desirable electrical conductivity, remarkable compression sensitivity, and excellent durable stability. The rGO/PI nanocomposites show potential applications in multifunctional strain sensors under the deformations of compression, bending, stretching, and torsion.
