Objective: To determine the causal relationship between educational attainment and the risk of allergic rhinitis and (or) eczema using Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses. Methods: This study was a secondary data analysis based on the summary data of genome-wide association studies (GWAS), which involved 293 723 participants (educational attainment) from the Social Science Genetics Association Consortium and 462 013 participants [allergic rhinitis and (or) eczema] from the UK Biobank. Genetic variants that were closely related to educational attainment were identified as instrumental variables. Two-sample MR analyses, including inverse-variance weighted (IVW), MR-Egger regression, weighted median method and weighted model-based estimation, were performed to investigate the causal relationship between educational attainment and the risk of allergic rhinitis and (or) eczema, in which the odds ratio (OR) values were used as indicators. Results: A total of 70 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were chosen as instrumental variables. The MR-Egger regression results suggested that the genetic pleiotropy was unlikely to bias our results (P=0.107). In the univariable MR analyses, IVW regression showed that the risk of allergic rhinitis and (or) eczema was OR=1.044 (95%CI: 1.020-1.069, P<0.001) and OR=1.170 (95%CI: 1.074-1.256, P<0.001), respectively, for the increase in the duration of education by one year or one standard deviation (SD) (3.71 years). In the reverse MR analysis, IVW regression showed little evidence that allergic rhinitis and (or) eczema affected educational attainment (OR=1.020, 95%CI: 0.927-1.023, P=0.683). The results of the weighted median method and weighted mode-based estimation were consistent with the results of IVW. Conclusion: This study suggests that there is a positive causal relationship between educational attainment and the risk of allergic rhinitis and (or) eczema, which means that educational attainment can increase the occurrence of allergic rhinitis and (or) eczema.

Objective: To investigate the blood flow change status in early stage tumor-related areas of hepatocellular carcinoma and its clinical significance after radiofrequency ablation using multi-slice spiral CT whole-liver perfusion imaging technology. Methods: 21 cases of primary liver cancer that underwent CT-guided radiofrequency ablation were included. CT perfusion scans were divided into four groups according to the time points of CT scans (before surgery, immediately after surgery and 1 and 3 month after surgery), and then blood perfusion parameters of the corresponding areas of the tumor were measured. Statistical analysis was performed using two independent samples of non-parametric Wilcoxon rank-sum test. The differences of blood perfusion parameters between tumor or ablation lesion and background liver parenchyma, paratumor tissue or inflammatory response zone were compared before, immediately and 1 and 3 months after surgery, respectively. Results: (1) The hepatic arterial perfusion (HAP) and hepatic arterial perfusion index (HPI) of cancerous liver tumors and background liver parenchyma was significantly increased (P < 0.01). The total liver perfusion (TLP) was higher than the background liver parenchyma (P = 0.01 < 0.05). The time to peak (TTP) was significantly lower than background liver parenchyma (P < 0.01); (2) The perfusion parameters of HAP, PVP and TLP were lower than the background liver parenchyma in the complete ablation lesions immediately after radiofrequency ablation and 1 and 3 months after surgery, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05); (3) The inflammatory response zone of ablation lesions of HAP, HPI, and TLP were gradually decreased with the extended postoperative time and TTP was gradually increased, while PVP did not change significantly; (4) HAP, HPI, and TTP were compared between the tumor and the tumor inflammatory response zone immediately after surgery, and 1 and 3 months after surgery, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.01). However, there was no statistically significant difference between PVP and TLP (P > 0.05). Conclusion: CT whole-liver perfusion imaging can precisely evaluate the early stage blood flow change status in peritumor and tumors before and after radiofrequency ablation and then objectively evaluate tumor's blood supply and therapeutic effect on hepatocellular carcinoma.

Objective: To investigate the differences and changes of blood flow status of splenic volume, common hepatic artery, splenic arteriovenous, inner diameter of portal vein and hepatic in patients with hypersplenism of different degrees using multi-slice spiral CT whole-liver perfusion model. Methods: 42 cases with hypersplenism of chronic hepatitis B with cirrhosis and 15 cases without hepatosplenic disease were collected as controls. All patients underwent multi-slice spiral CT whole-liver perfusion imaging. (1) The differences of spleen volume, common hepatic artery, splenic arteriovenous, and portal vein diameter between different degrees of hypersplenism and the control group were measured and compared. (2) The correlation between spleen volume and the inner diameter of each related vessels were analyzed and compared. (3) The values of perfusion parameters related to the five lobes of the liver in Couinaud segments based on hepatic artery perfusion (HAP), portal venous perfusion (PVP), total hepatic perfusion (TLP) and hepatic artery perfusion index (HPI) were measured and compared. One-way ANOVA was used to analyze the measurement data. The correlation between the spleen volume and the inner diameter of each blood vessel was analyzed by Pearson's correlation analysis. Results: (1) spleen volume and the inner diameter of splenic artery, splenic vein and portal vein in the cirrhotic hypersplenism group were significantly larger than control group, and the difference was statistically significant (F = 37.108, 17.484, 23.124, 13.636, P < 0.05). (2) spleen volume and the inner diameter of splenic artery, vein and portal vein in the moderate and severe hypersplenism groups were significantly larger than the mild hypersplenism group, and the difference was statistically significant (F = 25.418, 13.293, 15.136, 7.093, P < 0.05), but there was no statistically significant difference between the moderate and severe hypersplenism groups (P > 0.05). (3) The inner diameter of splenic vein, portal vein, and splenic artery was positively correlated with spleen volume (r = 0.680, 0.548, and 0.726). (4) PVP and TLP of the whole liver in hypersplenism group were lower than control group (P < 0.05), and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). HPI in the right posterior lobe of the liver in the moderate and severe hypersplenism group was higher than mild hypersplenism group (F = 3.555, 4.570, P < 0.05), and there was no significant difference in the HAP in the whole liver among the groups (P > 0.05), but the HAP in the whole liver in the severe hypersplenism group was lower than control, mild and moderate hypersplenism group. Conclusion: The inner diameter of the splenic arteriovenous in patients with hypersplenism of different degrees has widened to varying degrees, and is consistent with the increase in spleen volume, particularly in moderate and severe cases. Portal venous perfusion and total liver perfusion in patients with hypersplenism of different degrees have declined and the hepatic arterial perfusion in patients with severe hypersplenism is significantly reduced.

Objective: To analyze the symptom characteristics of Coronavirus Disease 2019(COVID-19) and to improve its prevention by using big data. Methods: Using Baidu Index Platform (http://index.baidu.com) and the website of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention as data resources, we obtained the search volume (SV) of keywords for symptoms associated with COVID-19 from January 1 to February 20 in each year from 2017 to 2020, in Hubei province and other top 10 impacted provinces in China and the epidemic data. Data of 2020 were compared with the previous three years. Data of Hubei province were compared with confirmed cases. The differences and characteristics of the SV of COVID-19-related symptoms, and the correlation between the SV of COVID-19 and new confirmed or suspected cases were analyzed and the hysteresis effects were discussed. R3.6.2 software was used to analyze the data. Results: Compared the data from January 1 to February 20, 2020, with the SV for the same period of previous three years, Hubei's SV for cough, fever, diarrhea, chest tightness, dyspnea and other symptoms were significantly increased. The total SV of lower respiratory symptoms was significantly higher than that of upper respiratory symptoms (P<0.001). The SV of COVID-19 in Hubei province was significantly correlated with new confirmed or suspected cases (r(confirmed)=0.723, r(suspected)=0.863, all P<0.001). The results of the distributed lag model suggested that the patients who retrieved relevant symptoms on the internet may begin to see a doctor in 2-3 days later and be diagnosed in 3-4 days later. Conclusions: The total SV of lower respiratory symptoms is higher than that of upper respiratory symptoms, and the SV of diarrhea also increases significantly. It warns us to pay attention to not only the symptoms of lower respiratory tract, but also the gastrointestinal symptoms, especially diarrhea in patients with COVID-19. There is a relationship between internet retrieval behavior and the number of new confirmed or suspected cases. Big data have a certain role in the early warning of infectious diseases.

Emergency vaccination with live marker vaccines represents a promising control strategy for future classical swine fever (CSF) outbreaks, and the first live marker vaccine is available in Europe. Successful implementation is dependent on a reliable accompanying diagnostic assay that allows differentiation of infected from vaccinated animals (DIVA). As induction of a protective immune response relies on virus-neutralizing antibodies against E2 protein of CSF virus (CSFV), the most promising DIVA strategy is based on detection of Erns -specific antibodies in infected swine. The aim of this study was to develop and to evaluate a novel Erns -specific prototype ELISA (pigtype CSFV Erns Ab), which may be used for CSF diagnosis including application as an accompanying discriminatory test for CSFV marker vaccines. The concept of a double-antigen ELISA was shown to be a solid strategy to detect Erns -specific antibodies against CSFV isolates of different genotypes (sensitivity: 93.5%; specificity: 99.7%). Furthermore, detection of early seroconversion is advantageous compared with a frequently used CSFV E2 antibody ELISA. Clear differences in reactivity between sera taken from infected animals and animals vaccinated with various marker vaccines were observed. In combination with the marker vaccine CP7_E2alf, the novel ELISA represents a sensitivity of 90.2% and a specificity of 93.8%. However, cross-reactivity with antibodies against ruminant pestiviruses was observed. Interestingly, the majority of samples tested false-positive in other Erns -based antibody ELISAs were identified correctly by the novel prototype Erns ELISA and vice versa. In conclusion, the pigtype CSFV Erns Ab ELISA can contribute to an improvement in routine CSFV antibody screening, particularly for analysis of sera taken at an early time point after infection and is applicable as a DIVA assay. An additional Erns antibody assay is recommended for identification of false-positive results in a pig herd immunized with the licensed CP7_E2alf marker vaccine.

A porous and interconnected nanorod-like FeP structure on titanium plate has been fabricated by a simple hydrothermal method and followed by a calcination process. The nanorod is assembled by many paralleled FeP nanowires with a porous structure. With the porous surface structure of FeP nanorods and the synergetic effect from the electronic conductive Ti support, this binder-free FeP electrode brings about a desirable electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), showing a low onset overpotential of 23 mV and a small Tafel slope of 39 mV dec-1. Meanwhile, its catalytic activity could be maintained almost unchanged for at least 12 h in an acidic solution. This work provides us an effective HER electrocatalyst which can be easily produced on a large scale and at low cost.

African swine fever (ASF) and classical swine fever (CSF) are two highly infectious transboundary animal diseases (TADs) that are serious threats to the pig industry worldwide, including in China, the world's largest pork producer. In this study, a duplex real-time PCR assay was developed for the rapid detection and differentiation of African swine fever virus (ASFV) and classical swine fever virus (CSFV). The assay was performed on a portable, battery-powered PCR thermocycler with a low sample throughput (termed as 'T-COR4 assay'). The feasibility and reliability of the T-COR4 assay as a possible field method was investigated by testing clinical samples collected in China. When evaluated with reference materials or samples from experimental infections, the assay performed in a reliable manner, producing results comparable to those obtained from stationary PCR platforms. Of 59 clinical samples, 41 had results identical to a two-step CSFV real-time PCR assay. No ASFV was detected in these samples. The T-COR4 assay was technically easy to perform and produced results within 3 h, including sample preparation. In combination with a simple sample preparation method, the T-COR4 assay provides a new tool for the field diagnosis and differentiation of ASF and CSF, which could be of particular value in remote areas.

Classical swine fever (CSF) is a devastating infectious disease of pigs caused by classical swine fever virus (CSFV). In China, CSF has been under control owing to extensive vaccination with the lapinized attenuated vaccine (C-strain) since 1950s, despite sporadic or endemic in many regions. However, recently, CSF outbreaks occurred in a large number of swine herds in China. Here, we isolated 15 CSFV strains from diverse C-strain-vaccinated pig farms in China and characterized the genetic variations and antigenicity of the new isolates. The new strains showed unique variations in the E2 protein and were clustered to the subgenotype 2.1d of CSFV recently emerging in China in the phylogenetic tree. Cross-neutralization test showed that the neutralizing titres of porcine anti-C-strain sera against the new isolates were substantially lower than those against both the highly virulent Shimen strain and the subgenotype 2.1b strains that were isolated in China in 2006 and 2009, respectively. In addition, experimental animal infection showed that the HLJZZ2014 strain-infected pigs displayed lower mortality and less severe clinical signs and pathological changes compared with the Shimen strain-infected pigs. The HLJZZ2014 strain was defined to be moderately virulent based on a previously established assessment system for CSFV virulence evaluation, and the virus shedding and the viral load in various tissues of the CSFV HLJZZ2014 strain-infected pigs were significantly lower than those of the Shimen strain-infected pigs. Taken together, the subgenotype 2.1d isolate of CSFV is a moderately virulent strain with molecular variations and antigenic alterations.

RESUMO

Graphene with a large specific surface area and high conductivity has a large specific capacitance. However, its volumetric capacitance is usually very low because the restacking of 2D graphene sheets leads to the loss of the large ion-accessible surface area. Here we report squeezable bicontinuous nanoporous nitrogen-doped graphene, which is extremely flexible and can tolerate large volume contraction by mechanical compression without the face-to-face restacking occurring. The compressed nanoporous N-doped graphene with a large ion accessible surface area and high conductivity shows an ultrahigh volumetric capacitance of ∼300 F cm-3 together with excellent cycling stability and high rate performance.

Free-standing nanoporous Ni-Cu-Mn mixed metal oxides on metal with a high surface area was fabricated by chemically dealloying a Ni8Cu12Mn80 single-phase precursor, followed by electrochemical oxidation in an alkaline solution. Electrochemical analysis shows that first Cu and Mn-based metal oxides formed by the electrochemical oxidation. Ni-based oxides grow later with the increase of electrochemical CV cycles and mix with the Cu/Mn oxides, forming a relatively stable mixed metal oxides thin film on metal ligament network. Due to the different electrochemical properties of each metal and the synergetic effect between them, the mixed ternary metal oxides formed on metal nano-ligament can operate stably between a wide potential window (1.5V) in 1.0M KOH aqueous solution when tested as a free-standing supercapacitor electrode. Due to the high volumetric surface area, wide operating potential window and excellent conductivity, the nanoporous metal oxides@metal composite exhibits a high volumetric capacitance (∼500Fcm(-3)), high energy density (∼38mWhcm(-3)) and good cycling stability.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous homogeneous chemicals which are well known by carcinogens, mutagens and endocrine disorder. Here, an improved real-time immuno-PCR (RT-IPCR) was developed for detection of pyrene and its homologs in water samples. The PAHs in sample compete with pyrene-modified DNA to bind with monoclonal antibody (McAb) coated on PCR plate. The reporter DNA was exponentially amplified by real-time PCR instrument using Fast Start universal SYBR Green Master (ROX) kit. Only two reaction steps were needed to accomplish the detection. The assay had a good linear range from 5 pmol L(-1) to 5 nmol L(-1) with a detection limit of 3.5 pmol L(-1). For application assay, the average recoveries from tap water, lake water and mineral water were 98.4%, 98.2% and 99.7%, respectively which showed a good correlation (R(2)=0.9906) with those from GC-MS. The results indicated that the improved RT-IPCR seems to be a potential method for simple and ultrasensitive detection of pyrene and some homologues in environment water samples.

Single-atom nickel dopants anchored to three-dimensional nanoporous graphene can be used as catalysts of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic solutions. In contrast to conventional nickel-based catalysts and graphene, this material shows superior HER catalysis with a low overpotential of approximately 50 mV and a Tafel slope of 45 mV dec(-1) in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution, together with excellent cycling stability. Experimental and theoretical investigations suggest that the unusual catalytic performance of this catalyst is due to sp-d orbital charge transfer between the Ni dopants and the surrounding carbon atoms. The resultant local structure with empty C-Ni hybrid orbitals is catalytically active and electrochemically stable.

RESUMO

Nanoporous metals produced by dealloying have shown great promise in many areas such as catalysis/electrocatalysis, energy conversion/storage, sensing/biosensing, actuation, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering. Particularly, nanoscale metal ligaments with high electronic conductivity, tunable size and rich surface chemistry make nanoporous metals very promising as catalysts/electrocatalysts for energy conversion applications such as fuel cells and also as versatile three-dimensional substrates for energy-storage in supercapacitors and lithium ion batteries. In this review, we focus on the recent developments of dealloyed nanoporous metals in both catalysis/electrocatalysis and energy storage. In particular, based on the state-of-the-art electron microscopy characterization, we explain the atomic origin of the high catalytic activity of nanoporous gold. We also highlight the recent advances in rationally designing nanoporous metal-based composites and hierarchical structures for enhanced energy storage. Finally, we conclude with some outlook and perspectives with respect to future research on dealloyed nanoporous metals in catalysis- and energy-related applications.

We report three-dimensional (3D) nanoporous graphene with preserved 2D electronic properties, tunable pore sizes, and high electron mobility for electronic applications. The complex 3D network comprised of interconnected graphene retains a 2D coherent electron system of massless Dirac fermions. The transport properties of the nanoporous graphene show a semiconducting behavior and strong pore-size dependence, together with unique angular independence. The free-standing, large-scale nanoporous graphene with 2D electronic properties and high electron mobility holds great promise for practical applications in 3D electronic devices.

Bicontinuous nanoporous N-doped graphene with tunable pore size is synthesized by nanoporous Ni-based chemical vapor deposition. The novel 3D graphene material shows an outstanding catalytic activity towards the oxygen reduction reaction with a low onset potential of -0.08 V and a high kinetic current density of 8.2 mA cm(-2) at -0.4 V.

A binder-free self-grown oxy-hydroxide@nanoporous Ni-Mn hybrid electrode with high capacitance and cyclic stability is fabricated by electrochemical polarization of a dealloyed nanoporous Ni-Mn alloy. Combined with the low material costs, high electrochemical stability, and environmentally friendly nature, this novel electrode holds great promise for applications in high-capacity commercial supercapacitors.

AIM: Biomarkers have been utilized for prognosis in colorectal cancer; however, relatively few have been identified. We compared the prognostic value of serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) with carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). METHOD: Blood samples were collected from 239 patients with mCRC presenting between 2005 and 2010 in the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center. RESULTS: CEA (P < 0.001), CA19-9 (P < 0.001), GGT (P < 0.001), ALP (P < 0.001) and LDH (P = 0.001) were statistically significant prognostic factors of overall survival (OS). CEA (P = 0.002) and GGT (P = 0.021) were validated as independent predictors. On univariate analysis, CEA (P = 0.003), CA19-9 (P = 0.006), GGT (P < 0.001) and ALP (P = 0.001) were statistically significant predictive factors of progression-free survival (PFS) in patients having first-line chemotherapy. CEA (P = 0.011) and GGT (P = 0.027) were independent predictors. GGT (P = 0.001), ALP (P = 0.016) and LDH (P = 0.039) levels were correlated with the tumour response rate assessed by CT, whilst CEA (P = 0.724) and CA19-9 (P = 0.822) were not. There was a statistically significant difference in OS (P < 0.001) and PFS (P < 0.001) among patients who had elevations of both CEA and GGT compared with those in whom only one or neither was elevated. CONCLUSION: Among GGT, LDH and ALP, only GGT plays an independent role with CEA in predicting OS and PFS in mCRC. When coupled with CEA, GGT may lead to improved prognostic predictors.

The genome of Transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) displays genetic diversity especially in gene 3 region. Sequence and comparative analysis of 3a and 3b genes of eight Chinese field strains with reference TGEV strains indicated that these strains shared 87.0-100% and 51.5%-100% identities at the nucleotide level, respectively, and 86.1%-100% and 66.2%-100% identities at the amino acid level, respectively. Moreover, in one of the strains (CH/SDQ/08), a 51 nt deletion in the gene 3 region was found. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the eight Chinese strains were more closely related to TGEV strains H165, H16, Miller M6, Miller M60, TS, and CHV than to other reference strains. In addition, this study indicated the presence of different TGEV strains within the same pig herds in China.

A highly pathogenic pig disease emerged in China in 2006, which was characterized by prolonged high fever, red discoloration of the body, and blue ears associated with high mortality. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) was isolated as the single most prominent virus in the samples collected from affected pigs. The full-length genomic sequence of the virus revealed two distinct deletions in the non-structural protein 2 (NSP2) in comparison to all previously reported North American genotype PRRSV. Through extensive surveys in 14 different provinces, 56 additional PRRSV isolates were obtained from affected farms. All of the isolates were found to contain identical deletions in NSP2. To confirm the etiology, eight 60-day-old PRRSV-free pigs were divided into two groups and the test group was intranasally infected at a titer of 2 x 10(5.0) tissue culture infectious dose 50 per pig. The inoculated pigs all died at 7, 8, 12, 16, or 21 days post-inoculation with their clinical and pathological findings similar to those in the field. The viruses recovered from dead pigs were identical to the inoculated virus in NSP2 and GP5 genes. Our study shows that the recently emerged PRRSV in China is characterized by two discontiguous deletions in NSP2 and is the cause for the current epizootics in China.
