RESUMO
A microbiological sampling system on the basis of variables is presented which requires only small numbers of replicates (n greater than or equal to 2). The system uses previous data on standard deviations of numbers of micro-organisms in batches and is particularly useful for in-plant situations. The discriminating power of the system is comparable to that of the current International Committee on Microbiological Specifications for Foods sampling schemes but uses more replicates.

The abdominal aorta of the rat was isolated and perfused. Pulsations were found to be a prerequisite for prostacyclin production in the isolated aorta. In the pulsatingly perfused aorta, the prostacyclin production decreases rapidly during the first 30 min of perfusion and very slowly between 30 and 120 min. The technique offers a good means of investigating the effects of different agents on prostacyclin production.

We conclude that dietary changes can have a profound influence on prostaglandin and thromboxane synthesis of organ systems. A better insight into underlying mechanisms is necessary before more definite advice with respect to feeding a linolenic acid and very long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids as found in fish oils can be given.
