RESUMO

Pathogens generate and secrete effector proteins to the host plant cells during pathogenesis to promote virulence and colonization. If the plant carries resistance (R) proteins that recognize pathogen effectors, effector-triggered immunity (ETI) is activated, resulting in a robust immune response and hypersensitive response (HR). The bipartite effector AvrRps4 from Pseudomonas syringae pv. pisi has been well studied in terms of avirulence function. In planta, AvrRps4 is processed into two parts. The C-terminal fragment of AvrRps4 (AvrRps4C) induces HR in turnip and is recognized by the paired resistance proteins AtRRS1/AtRPS4 in Arabidopsis. Here, we show that AvrRps4C targets a group of Arabidopsis WRKY, including WRKY46, WRKY53, WRKY54, and WRKY70, to induce its virulence function. Indeed, AvrRps4C suppresses the general binding and transcriptional activities of immune-positive regulator WRKY54 and WRKY54-mediated resistance. AvrRps4C interferes with WRKY54's binding activity to target gene SARD1 in vitro, suggesting WRKY54 is sequestered from the SARD1 promoter by AvrRps4C. Through the interaction of AvrRps4C with four WRKYs, AvrRps4 enhances the formation of homo-/heterotypic complexes of four WRKYs and sequesters them in the cytoplasm, thus inhibiting their function in plant immunity. Together, our results provide a detailed virulence mechanism of AvrRps4 through its C-terminus.

One new compound, styrene dimer-type listeanol-4-O-α-ʟ-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-ß-ᴅ-glucopyranoside (1), and four known compounds namely listeanol (2), isorhapotigenin (3), genetifolin E (4), gnetifolin K (5) were isolated from the methanolic extract from the aerial part of the Gnetum montanum Markgr. in Viet Nam. Their chemical structures were determined by modern spectroscopic methods (NMR and HR-ESI-MS) and comparison with those of published data. These compounds were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic activities. Among them, compound 3 exhibited the NO inhibitory production on the RAW264.7 cell line, and inhibited the HepG2 cell line with respective IC50 values of 79.88 ± 5.51 (µg/mL) (L-NMMA 7.90 ± 0.63 µg/mL), and 63.48 ± 3.63 (µg/mL) (Ellipticine 0.40 ± 0.01 µg/mL).

In this study, we investigate the influence of montmorillonite (MMT) on the loading and release of Piper betle L. extract (PLE)-a medicinal herb containing active secondary metabolites with antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects. MMT (1 %, 3 %, 5 %) was blended into the chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (CS/PVA) biocomposite film by the solution evaporation method, and then PLE was loaded onto this biocomposite using the immersion method. The tensile strength and the ability to absorb exudates of the CS/PVA film improved with the increase in MMT content. The MMT 3 % film was considered to have the best properties: good mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 27.44 ± 0.27 MPa and elongation at break of 14.57 ± 0.30 %, potential for wound dressing due to its ability to absorb wound exudate (swelling degree 61.70 ± 0.30 %) and a suitable water vapor transmission rate (1999 ± 47 g/m2·d). The presence of MMT (1 %, 3 %, 5 %) in the CS/PVA film led to an increase in the PLE loading efficiency of the films compared to the film without MMT, up to 1.65, 1.73, and 1.87 times, respectively. The MMT 3 % and 5 % films also exhibited a sustained PLE release effect for up to 24 h. MMT increased PLE bioavailability through bioactivity tests: antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus, antioxidant activity, effective healing of 2nd-degree burn wounds, and biocompatibility with the L929 fibroblasts cell line. The combination of physicochemical properties and biological activities proved that the MMT/PLE drug delivery system based on the CS/PVA biocomposite is promising for wound dressing.

Sausage is a convenient food that is widely consumed in the world and in Vietnam. Due to the rapid development of this product, the authenticity of many famous brands has faded by the rise of adulteration. Therefore, in this study, principal component analysis (PCA) was combined with chemical analysis to identify 6 sausage brands. Sausage samples were dried and then ground to a fine powder for both instrumental analyses of attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Dried measurements of ATR-FTIR was performed directly on the ZnSe crystal, while elemental data were obtained through microwave digestion before the ICP-MS analysis. Principal component analysis (PCA) within the framework software of XLSTAT and STATISTICA 12 was performed on the spectroscopy and elemental dataset of sausage samples. PCA visualized the distinction of 6 sausage brands on both datasets of ATR-FTIR and ICP-MS. The classification on the spectroscopy profile showed that although more than 90% variation of the dataset was explained on the first two PCs, the difference between several brands was not detected as the distribution of data overlapped with one another. The PCA observation of the elemental composition on PC1 and PC3 has separated the sausage brands into 6 distinctive groups. Besides, several key elements contributed to the brands' identification have been detected, and the most distinctive elements are Na, K, Ca, and Ba. PCA visualization showed the feasibility of the classification of sausage samples from different brands when combined with the results of FT-IR and ICP-MS methods. The experiment was able to differentiate the sausages from the 5 brands using multivariate statistics.

Flexible bronchoscopy has revolutionized respiratory disease diagnosis. It offers direct visualization and detection of airway abnormalities, including lung cancer lesions. Accurate identification of airway lesions during flexible bronchoscopy plays an important role in the lung cancer diagnosis. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) aims to support physicians in recognizing anatomical landmarks and lung cancer lesions within bronchoscopic imagery. This work described the development of BM-BronchoLC, a rich bronchoscopy dataset encompassing 106 lung cancer and 102 non-lung cancer patients. The dataset incorporates detailed localization and categorical annotations for both anatomical landmarks and lesions, meticulously conducted by senior doctors at Bach Mai Hospital, Vietnam. To assess the dataset's quality, we evaluate two prevalent AI backbone models, namely UNet++ and ESFPNet, on the image segmentation and classification tasks with single-task and multi-task learning paradigms. We present BM-BronchoLC as a reference dataset in developing AI models to assist diagnostic accuracy for anatomical landmarks and lung cancer lesions in bronchoscopy data.

The Squaretail mullet, Ellochelon vaigiensis, is a commercial fish species distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific region. This species tolerates wide variations in salinity, having been reported from both freshwater and marine habitats. Although economically significant, there is little information on its reproduction, especially in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD), where it is heavily extracted. Our study elucidates the breeding pattern, seasonality, first length at maturity, as well as potential and relative fecundity of this species. Fish specimens were collected by trawl nets from November 2020 to October 2021 at four estuarine sites within the VMD. We found this species to be a synchronous spawner, with peaks in reproductive activity from June to September. In the populations we surveyed, there was significant dominance of males (1.26:1.00) based on 942 fish samples (526 males and 416 females). The length at 50% maturity for females was significantly higher than for males at all sites and ranged from 10.6 to 19.3 cm. The diameter of the eggs examined for this species exhibited slight variation, from 0.43 to 0.54 mm. The potential fecundity ranged from 246,254 ± 35,878 to 411,970 ± 54,370 eggs, corresponding to female length and weight of 26.7-32.6 cm and 102.97-234.19 g, respectively. Relative fecundity values were highest at Thanh Phu, Ben Tre (6388 ± 605 eggs), and Dong Hai, Bac Lieu (6461 ± 637 eggs), followed by Tran De, Soc Trang (4729 ± 408), and were found to be lowest at Duyen Hai, Tra Vinh (3117 ± 223 eggs). Information on reproductive behavior in this species has far-reaching impacts on sustainable extractions, stock conservation, and aquaculture.

OBJECTIVE: Blood culture (BC) sampling is recommended for all suspected sepsis patients prior to antibiotic administration. We examine barriers and enablers to BC sampling in three Southeast Asian countries. DESIGN: A Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF)-based survey, comprising a case scenario of a patient presenting with community-acquired sepsis and all 14 TDF domains of barriers/enablers to BC sampling. SETTING: Hospitals in Indonesia, Thailand and Viet Nam, December 2021 to 30 April 2022. PARTICIPANTS: 1070 medical doctors and 238 final-year medical students were participated in this study. Half of the respondents were women (n=680, 52%) and most worked in governmental hospitals (n=980, 75.4%). OUTCOME MEASURES: Barriers and enablers to BC sampling. RESULTS: The proportion of respondents who answered that they would definitely take BC in the case scenario was highest at 89.8% (273/304) in Thailand, followed by 50.5% (252/499) in Viet Nam and 31.3% (157/501) in Indonesia (p<0.001). Barriers/enablers in nine TDF domains were considered key in influencing BC sampling, including 'priority of BC (TDF-goals)', 'perception about their role to order or initiate an order for BC (TDF-social professional role and identity)', 'perception that BC is helpful (TDF-beliefs about consequences)', 'intention to follow guidelines (TDF-intention)', 'awareness of guidelines (TDF-knowledge)', 'norms of BC sampling (TDF-social influence)', 'consequences that discourage BC sampling (TDF-reinforcement)', 'perceived cost-effectiveness of BC (TDF-environmental context and resources)' and 'regulation on cost reimbursement (TDF-behavioural regulation)'. There was substantial heterogeneity between the countries. In most domains, the lower (higher) proportion of Thai respondents experienced the barriers (enablers) compared with that of Indonesian and Vietnamese respondents. A range of suggested intervention types and policy options was identified. CONCLUSIONS: Barriers and enablers to BC sampling are varied and heterogenous. Cost-related barriers are more common in more resource-limited countries, while many barriers are not directly related to cost. Context-specific multifaceted interventions at both hospital and policy levels are required to improve diagnostic stewardship practices.

The formation of pathogenic biofilms on medical devices is a major public health concern accounting for over 65% of healthcare-associated infections and causing high infection morbidity, mortality, and a great burden to patients and the healthcare system due to its resistance to treatment. In this study, we developed a chitosan-based antimicrobial coating with embedded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) to load and deliver eugenol, an essential oil component, to inhibit the biofilm formation of common bacteria in medical-device-related infections. The eugenol-loaded MSNs were dispersed in a chitosan solution, which was then cross-linked with glutaraldehyde and drop-casted to obtain coatings. The MSNs and coatings were characterized by dynamic light scattering, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, attenuated-total-reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, 3D optical profilometry, and scanning electron microscopy. The release behavior of eugenol-loaded MSNs and coatings and the antibiofilm and antimicrobial activity of the coatings against adherent Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were investigated. Eugenol was released from the MSNs and coatings in aqueous conditions in a controlled manner with an initial low release, followed by a peak release, a decrease, and a plateau. While the chitosan coatings alone or with unloaded MSNs demonstrated limited antimicrobial effects and still supported biofilm formation after 24 h, the coating containing eugenol not only reduced biofilm formation but also killed the majority of the attached bacteria. It also showed biocompatibility in indirect contact with NIH/3T3 fibroblasts and a high percentage of live cells in direct contact. However, further investigations into cell proliferation in direct contact are recommended. The findings indicated that the chitosan-based coating with eugenol-loaded MSNs could be developed into an effective strategy to inhibit biofilm formation on medical devices.

Pulverized coal power plants are increasingly participating in aggressive load-following markets, therefore necessitating the design and optimization of primary superheaters for flexible operations. These superheaters play a critical role in maintaining the final steam temperature of the steam turbine, but their high operating temperatures and pressures make them prone to failure. This study focuses on the optimal design of future-generation primary superheaters for a fast load-following operation. To achieve this, a detailed first-principles model of a primary superheater is developed along with submodels for stress and fatigue damage. Two single-objective optimization problems are solved: one for minimizing metal mass as a measure of capital cost and another for minimizing pressure drop on the steam side as a measure of operating cost. Since these objective functions conflict, a multiobjective optimization problem is executed using a weighted metric methodology. Results from these optimization studies show that the base case design can violate stress constraints during the aggressive load-following operation. However, by optimizing the design variables, it is possible to not only satisfy tight stress constraints but also achieve the desired number of allowable cycles and adhere to the steam outlet temperature constraint. In addition, the optimized design reduces either the metal mass or the steam-side pressure drop compared to that of the base case design. Importantly, this approach is not limited to primary superheaters alone but can also be applied to similar high-temperature heat exchangers in other applications.

Two new vernonioside K (1) and vernonioside L (2) and four known Δ7,9(11) stigmastane-type steroidal saponins-vernonioside B2 (3), vernoniacum B (4), vernonioside B1 (5), and vernoamyoside A (6)-were isolated from the leaves of Vernonia amygdalina. Their structures were determined by comprehensive spectroscopic analysis with one-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance, two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance, and high-resolution mass spectrometry. All isolated compounds (1-6) were evaluated to determine their inhibitory effects on α-glucosidase and xanthine oxidase. Among them, two new compounds 1 and 2 showed significant inhibition of α-glucosidase with IC50 values of 78.56 ± 7.28 and 14.74 ± 1.57 (µM), respectively, comparable with acarbose as a positive control (127.53 ± 1.73 µM); none of these compounds inhibited xanthine oxidase activity. Compounds 1 and 2 are promising candidates for the development of antidiabetic agents from natural sources.

Fingerprinting techniques, which utilize the unique chemical and physical properties of food samples, have emerged as a promising approach for food authentication and traceability. Recent studies have demonstrated significant advancements in food authentication through the use of fingerprinting methods, such as multivariate statistical analysis techniques applied to trace elements and isotope ratios. However, further research is required to optimize these methods and ensure their validity and reliability in real-world applications. In this study, the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analytical method was employed to determine the content of 21 elements in 300 cashew nut (Anacardium occidentale L.) samples from 5 brands. Multivariate statistical methods, such as principal components analysis (PCA), were employed to analyze the data obtained and establish the provenance of the cashew nuts. While cashew nuts are widely marketed in many countries, no universal method has been utilized to differentiate the origin of these nuts. Our study represents the initial step in identifying the geographical origin of commercial cashew nuts marketed in Vietnam. The analysis showed significant differences in the means of 21 of the 40 analyzed elements among the cashew nut samples from the 5 brands, including 7Li, 11B, 24Mg, 27Al, 44Ca, 48Ti, 51V, 52Cr, 55Mn, 57Fe, 60Ni, 63Cu, 66Zn, 93Nb, 98Mo, 111Cd, 115In, 121Sb, 138Ba, 208Pb, and 209Bi. The PCA analysis indicated that the cashew nut samples can be accurately classified according to their original locations. This research serves as a prerequisite for future studies involving the combination of elemental composition analysis with statistical classification methods for the accurate establishment of cashew nut provenance, which involves the identification of key markers for the original discrimination of cashew nuts.

Butis genus is characterised by their small body size and morphological variability, allowing them to adapt to different habitats. This paper analyses the mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase subunit I gene sequences and morphology of Butis for identification purposes and to understand genetic relationships. The morphological characteristics of Butis koilomatodon differed obviously from Butis humeralis and Butis butis. After classification based on morphology, the total deoxyribonucleic acid of fish samples was isolated, and the mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase subunit I genes were successfully amplified using the polymerase chain reaction method. At approximately 617bp, the obtained mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase subunit I gene sequences were highly similar to the reference sequences on Genbank (85.90-100%). The phylogenetic graphic was divided into five distinct groups, where B. koilomatodon was grouped in one group; and B. humeralis and B. butis were grouped together. The results suggest that B. humeralis was an entirely different species from B. butis, with a mean genetic divergence of up to 14%. However, further studies using a combination of other types of deoxyribonucleic acid barcoding together with morphological features should be undertaken to confirm these findings.

Distribution patterns of 10 phthalic acid diesters (PAEs) and four cyclic volatile methylsiloxanes (cVMSs) were investigated in fine particulate matter (PM0.1 and PM0.5) collected from Bac Ninh, an industrial province in Vietnam during September-October in 2021. Total concentrations of PAEs found in PM0.1 and PM0.5 were in the ranges of 1.76-372 (median: 34.0 ng/m3) and 2.23-895 ng/m3 (median: 15.4 ng/m3), respectively. Among PAEs, di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) was the most abundant compound found in PM0.1, whereas, di-2-(ethyl)hexyl phthalate (DEHP) was measured at the highest concentration in PM0.5. Total concentrations of cVMSs measured in PM0.1 and PM0.5 were in the ranges of method quantification limit (MQL)-203 (median: 2.10 ng/m3) and MQL-537 ng/m3 (median: 0.389 ng/m3), respectively. Among cVMSs, decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) was found at the highest concentration in both PM0.1 and PM0.5 fractions of particulate matter. The concentration ratios between PAEs and cVMSs in PM0.1/PM0.5 were greater than 1 (except di-n-octyl phthalate: DnOP), suggesting that these chemicals tend to sorb to PM0.1 more preferentially than PM0.5. Among sampling locations, high concentrations of PAEs and cVMSs were found at traffic intersections (Que Vo district) and a craft village (Tu Son city). Relatively stronger correlations existed between cVMSs pairs in PM0.1 and PM0.5 (correlation coefficient: 0.73-1) than those of PAEs (-0.83-0.90). The human exposure doses to PAEs and cVMSs through inhalation of particulate matter were estimated based on the measured concentrations in PM0.1 and PM0.5 fractions. The estimated exposure doses of PAEs and cVMSs for infants (7.1 ng/kg-bw/d and 2.5 ng/kg-bw/d) were higher than those for adults (2.6 ng/kg-bw/d and 0.9 ng/kg-bw/d).

Population's biological parameters, including length at first capture, mortalities, exploitation rates, growth coefficient, longevity, and recruitment times, are essential in assessing fishing status, but there is no data on Mystus mysticetus. Therefore, the study was conducted to provide these parameters to assess the fishing status of this species at Cai Rang, Can Tho (CRCT) and Long Phu, Soc Trang (LPST). A collection of 741 individual fish was used for analysis and showed that most fish size groups ranged from 9.0 cm to 12.0 cm, and the asymptotic length was 16.8 cm for both CRCT and LPST populations. The fish population von Bertalanffy curve was L t = 16.80(1 - e-0.51(t + 0.38)) at CRCT and L t = 16.80(1 - e-0.48(t + 0.40)) at LPST. The fish growth coefficient at CRCT (2.16) was higher than at LPST (2.13), whereas the reverse case was true for longevity ranging from 5.88 years (at CRCT) to 6.25 years (at LPST). At CRCT, fishing mortality, natural mortality, total mortality, and exploitation rate were 0.69/year, 1.40/year, 2.09/year, and 0.33, respectively; at LPST, these values were 0.75/year, 1.33/year, 2.08/year, and 0.36, respectively. Although the population parameter of this fish species exhibited a spatial variation, both CRCT and LPST fish resources have not been subjected to overexploit because E (0.33 at CRCT and 0.36 at LPST) is lower than E 0.1 (0.707 at CRCT and 0.616 at LPST).

Interfacial damage has a high impact on the loosening of the acetabular cup. However, monitoring this damage induced by the variations in loading conditions, such as the angle, amplitude, and frequency in vivo, is challenging. In this study, we evaluated the risk of loosening of the acetabular cup due to interfacial damages induced by the deviation in loading conditions and amplitudes. A three-dimensional model of the acetabular cup component was developed, and the interfacial crack growth between the cup and the bone was modeled using a fracture mechanics approach, which simulated the extent of interfacial damage and associated cup displacement. The interfacial delamination mechanism changed with the increasing inclination angle, wherein a fixation angle of 60° exhibited the largest area of contact loss. The compressive strain of embedding the simulated bone at the remaining bonding area accumulated as the lost contact area widened. Such interfacial damages, namely, the growth of the lost contact area and accumulated compressive strain in the simulated bone, promoted both embedding and rotational displacement of the acetabular cup. In the worst case of a fixation angle of 60°, the total displacement of the acetabular cup exceeded the limit of the modified safe zone, suggesting a quantitative risk of dislocation of the acetabular cup induced by the accumulated interfacial damage. Furthermore, nonlinear regression analyses between the degree of displacement of the acetabular cup and the extent of the two types of interfacial damage demonstrated that the interactive effect of the fixation angle with the loading amplitude showed a significant effect on increasing cup displacement. These findings suggest that proper control of the fixation angle during operation is useful in preventing the loosening of the hip joint.

Neonicotinoid (NN) pesticides have emerged globally as one of the most widely used agricultural tools for protecting crops from pest damage and boosting food production. Unfortunately, some NN compounds, such as extensively employed imidacloprid-based pesticides, have also been identified as likely endangering critical pollinating insects like honey bees. To this end, NN pesticides pose a potential threat to world food supplies. As more countries restrict or prohibit the use of NN pesticides, tools are needed to effectively and quickly identify the presence of NN compounds like imidacloprid on site (e.g., in storage areas on farms or pesticide distribution warehouses). This study represents a proof-of-concept where the colloidal properties of specifically modified gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) able to engage in the rare intermolecular interaction of halogen bonding (XB) can result in the detection of certain NN compounds. Density functional theory and diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY NMR) are used to explore the fundamental XB interactions between strong XB-donor structures and NN compounds, with the latter found to possess multiple XB-acceptor binding sites. A fundamental understanding of these XB interactions allows for the functionalization of alkanethiolate-stabilized Au-NPs, known as monolayer-protected gold clusters (MPCs), with XB-donor capability (f-MPCs). In the presence of certain NN compounds such as imidacloprid, the f-MPCs subsequently exhibit visual XB-induced aggregation that is also measured with absorption (UV-vis) spectroscopy and verified with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging. The demonstrated f-MPC-aggregation detection scheme has a number of favorable attributes, including quickly reporting the presence of the NN target, requiring only micrograms of suspect material, and being highly selective for imidacloprid, the most prevalent and most important NN insecticide compound. Requiring no instrumentation, the presented methodology can be envisioned as a simple screening test in which dipping a cotton swab of an unknown powder from a surface in a f-MPC solution causes f-MPCs to aggregate and yield a preliminary indication of imidacloprid presence.

First-generation amperometric xanthine (XAN) biosensors, assembled via layer-by-layer methodology and featuring xerogels doped with gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs), were the focus of this study and involved both fundamental exploration of the materials as well as demonstrated usage of the biosensor in both clinical (disease diagnosis) and industrial (meat freshness) applications. Voltammetry and amperometry were used to characterize and optimize the functional layers of the biosensor design including a xerogel with and without embedded xanthine oxidase enzyme (XOx) and an outer, semi-permeable blended polyurethane (PU) layer. Specifically, the porosity/hydrophobicity of xerogels formed from silane precursors and different compositions of PU were examined for their impact on the XAN biosensing mechanism. Doping the xerogel layer with different alkanethiol protected Au-NPs was demonstrated as an effective means for enhancing biosensor performance including improved sensitivity, linear range, and response time, as well as stabilizing XAN sensitivity and discrimination against common interferent species (selectivity) over time-all attributes matching or exceeding most other reported XAN sensors. Part of the study focuses on deconvoluting the amperometric signal generated by the biosensor and determining the contribution from all of the possible electroactive species involved in natural purine metabolism (e.g., uric acid, hypoxanthine) as an important part of designing XAN sensors (schemes amenable to miniaturization, portability, or low production cost). Effective XAN sensors remain relevant as potential tools for both early diagnosis of diseases as well as for industrial food monitoring.

This paper presents a systematic literature review focused on the use of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) combined with PCA, a multivariate technique, for determining the geographical origin of plant foods. Recent studies selected and applied the ICP-MS analytical method and PCA in plant food geographical traceability. The collected results from many previous studies indicate that ICP-MS with PCA is a useful tool and is widely used for authenticating and certifying the geographic origin of plant food. The review encourages scientists and managers to discuss the possibility of introducing an international standard for plant food traceability using ICP-MS combined with PCA. The use of a standard method will reduce the time and cost of analysis and improve the efficiency of trade and circulation of goods. Furthermore, the main steps needed to establish the standard for this traceability method are reported, including the development of guidelines and quality control measures, which play a pivotal role in providing authentic product information through each stage of production, processing, and distribution for consumers and authority agencies. This might be the basis for establishing the standards for examination and controlling the quality of foods in the markets, ensuring safety for consumers.

RESUMO

The MTT assay is extensively used, most often to infer a measure of cytotoxicity of treatments to cells. As with any assay though, there are a number of limitations. The method described here is designed with consideration of how the MTT assay fundamentally works to account for, or at least identify, confounding factors in measurements. It also provides a decision-making framework to best interpret and complement the MTT assay to apply it as either a measure of metabolic activity or cell viability.
