RESUMO

Sub-nanometer metal clusters have special physical and chemical properties, significantly different from those of nanoparticles. However, there is a major concern about their thermal stability and susceptibility to oxidation. In situ X-ray Absorption spectroscopy and Near Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy results reveal that supported Cu5 clusters are resistant to irreversible oxidation at least up to 773 K, even in the presence of 0.15 mbar of oxygen. These experimental findings can be formally described by a theoretical model which combines dispersion-corrected DFT and first principles thermochemistry revealing that most of the adsorbed O2 molecules are transformed into superoxo and peroxo species by an interplay of collective charge transfer within the network of Cu atoms and large amplitude "breathing" motions. A chemical phase diagram for Cu oxidation states of the Cu5 -oxygen system is presented, clearly different from the already known bulk and nano-structured chemistry of Cu.

Surface chemistry is a key determinant of the physico-chemical and biological properties of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The introduction of chemical diversity in the surface of AuNPs is usually accomplished by place-exchange reactions using incoming ligands containing the desired terminal functional groups. As an alternative approach, we present here a simple, practical methodology to modify the surface of gold nanoparticles that allows the preparation of AuNPs stabilized with polyethyleneglycol (PEG) ligands with different surface chemistries using AuNPs stabilized with thiol-PEG-amino ligands as starting material. The surface modification reaction involves the acylation of the terminal amino groups in the ligand with an organic acid anhydride in an aqueous buffer. In addition to a full surface modification, this method also allows the synthesis of AuNPs with tailored mixed surfaces, containing two or more different functional groups, each of them at the desired extent. The ease of the experimental conditions for the reaction, purification, and for determining the level of surface modification makes this strategy an attractive alternative to current methods for the preparation of AuNPs with diverse surface chemistry.

We report an easily scalable synthesis method for the preparation of cysteine-capped Cu≈10 clusters through the reduction of Cu(II) ions with NaBH4, using Cu5 clusters as catalysts. The presence of such catalytic clusters allows controlling the formation of the larger Cu≈10 clusters and prevents the production of copper oxides or Cu(I)-cysteine complexes, which are formed when Cu5 is absent or at lower concentrations, respectively. These results indicate that small catalytic clusters could be involved, as precursor species before the reduction step, in the different methods developed for the synthesis of clusters. The visible light-absorbing Cu≈10 clusters, obtained by the cluster-catalysed method, display high photocatalytic activities for the decomposition of methyl orange with visible light.

With the ever-growing interest in quantum computing, understanding the behavior of excitons in monolayer quantum dots has become a topic of great relevance. In this paper, we consider a Wannier exciton confined in a triangular quantum dot of hexagonal boron nitride. We begin by outlining the adequate basis functions to describe a particle in a triangular enclosure, analyzing their degeneracy and symmetries. Afterwards, we discuss the excitonic Hamiltonian inside the quantum dot and study the influence of the quantum dot dimensions on the excitonic states.

When transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers lack inversion symmetry, their low-energy single particle spectrum near some high-symmetry points can, in some cases, be described by tilted massive Dirac Hamiltonians. The so-called Janus materials fall into that category. Inversion symmetry can also be broken by the application of out-of-plane electric fields, or by the mere presence of a substrate. Here we explore the properties of excitons in TMDC monolayers lacking inversion symmetry. We find that exciton binding energies can be larger than the electronic band gap, making such materials promising candidates to host the elusive exciton insulator phase. We also investigate the excitonic contribution to their optical conductivity and discuss the associated optical selection rules.

Silver nanoclusters of five atoms (Ag5) display outstanding catalytic activities for the deactivation of radicals. Using 2,2-diphenyl-1­picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical as a model system, we observed a fast radical reduction to DPPH anions using only [Ag5] 3 to 4 orders of magnitude less than [DPPH]. Moreover, nanoclusters remain stable at the end of the reaction, and can deactivate again DPPH radicals at the same rate, indicating that they act as anti-radical catalysts. The radical scavenger catalytic activity of Ag5 proceeds selectively through the oxidation of methanol (used to dissolve the radical) to formaldehyde, which is supported by DFT calculations. The obtained catalytic rate constants are almost 2 orders of magnitude higher than oxidases, and more than 4 orders of magnitude larger than graphene quantum dots. We also show that Ag5 not only catalyze the reduction of radicals but also their oxidation, promoting the inhibition of the autoxidation mechanisms of hydrocarbon polymers, which are very sensitive to the presence of radicals. For this purpose, thin films of two industrially relevant polymers (polyisoprene and acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene copolymer), were exposed to standard simulated photo-ageing conditions in the presence of Ag5. Using Attenuated Total Reflection-FTIR and DFT modeling we observed that, although Ag5 nanoclusters, with ≈ 15% surface coverage, do not totally inhibit the oxidation, they favour a decomposition that yields inactive products, in contrast with the more detrimental ketone formation pathway. These results not only open new possibilities for developing a post-process inhibition of polymer degradation, for which nowadays there are no efficient procedures, but also, they could be used as very efficient dual-redox catalytic radical scavengers for different industrial or biomedical purposes.

Purpose We aimed to evaluate the current situation of electronic health records (EHRs) and patient registries in the oncology departments of hospitals in Spain. Methods This was a cross-sectional study conducted from December 2018 to September 2019. The survey was designed ad hoc by the Outcomes Evaluation and Clinical Practice Section of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM) and was distributed to all head of medical oncology department members of SEOM. Results We invited 148 heads of oncology departments, and 81 (54.7%) questionnaires were completed, with representation from all 17 Spanish autonomous communities. Seventy-seven (95%) of the respondents had EHRs implemented at their hospitals; of them, over 80% considered EHRs to have a positive impact on work organization and clinical practice, and 73% considered that EHRs improve the quality of patient care. In contrast, 27 (35.1%) of these respondents felt that EHRs worsened the physician–patient relationship and conveyed an additional workload (n = 29; 37.6%). Several drawbacks in the implementation of EHRs were identified, including the limited inclusion of information on both outpatients and inpatients, information recorded in free text data fields, and the availability of specific informed consent. Forty-six (56.7%) respondents had patient registries where they recorded information from all patients seen in the department. Conclusion Our study indicates that EHRs are almost universally implemented in the hospitals surveyed and are considered to have a positive impact on work organization and clinical practice. However, EHRs currently have several drawbacks that limit their use for investigational purposes (AU)

Synthesis and purification of metal clusters without strong binding agents by wet chemical methods are very attractive for their potential applications in many research areas. However, especially challenging is the separation of uncharged clusters with only a few number of atoms, which renders the usual techniques very difficult to apply. Herein, we report the first efficient separation of Ag2 and Ag3 clusters using the different entropic driving forces when such clusters interact with DNA, into which Ag3 selectively intercalates. After sequential dialysis of the samples and denaturalizing the DNA-Ag3 complex, pure Ag2 can be found in the dialysate after extensive dialysis. Free Ag3 is recovered after DNA denaturation.

The enhancement of catalysts efficiency of bimetallic nanoparticles depends on the ability to exert control over surface composition. However, results relating surface composition and feeding solution of bimetallic nanoparticles synthesized in microemulsions are controversial and apparently contradictory. In order to comprehend how the resulting surface can be modified under different synthesis conditions and for different pairs of metals, a computer simulation study was carried out. The resulting surface compositions are explained based on the relative rates of deposition of the two metals, which depend on the particular metal pair, the concentration of reactants and the microemulsion composition. This study provides a satisfactory understanding of experimental results and allows us to identify the main factors affecting the nanoparticle's surface composition. Consequently, concrete and practical guidelines can be established to facilitate the experimental synthesis of bimetallic nanoparticles with tailored surfaces.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have investigated the safety and efficacy of anti-PD-(L)1 antibodies in metastatic urothelial carcinoma (mUC) in daily clinical practice. Knowledge about the influence of baseline clinical and analytical factors on therapy outcomes is scarce. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrospective study involving 119 previously treated or untreated mUC patients under anti-PD-(L)1 therapy in a real-world scenario. The objectives of this study were to confirm the safety and efficacy of anti-PD-(L)1 monotherapy and to identify pretreatment factors influencing therapy outcomes. In addition, an independent prognostic model for overall survival (OS) was developed and internally validated. RESULTS: Median OS was 7.8 months [95% confidence interval (CI), 5.4-10.4], median progression-free survival (PFS) was 2.80 months (95% CI, 2.4-3.4), disease control rate (DCR) was 40% (95% CI, 31-49), and overall response rate (ORR) was 24% (95% CI, 15-31). Presence of peritoneal metastases was associated with poor OS [hazard ratio (HR) = 2.40, 95% CI, 1.08-5.33; P = 0.03]. Use of proton-pump inhibitors (PPI) was associated with poor OS (HR = 1.83, 95% CI, 1.11-3.02; P = 0.02) and PFS (HR = 1.94, 95% CI, 1.22-3.09; P = 0.005), and lower DCR (OR = 0.38, 95% CI, 0.17-0.89; P = 0.03) and ORR (OR = 0.18, 95% CI, 0.02-1.60; P = 0.002). The three risk category prognostic model developed included Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status, PPI use, albumin level, presence of liver metastases, and presence of peritoneal metastases variables and was associated with higher risk of death (HR = 3.00, 95% CI, 1.97-4.56; P = 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms anti-PD-(L)1 monotherapy as a safe and effective treatment option in daily clinical practice for mUC patients. It also describes the presence of peritoneal metastases as an independent prognostic factor for OS and underlines the association between PPI use and worse therapeutic outcomes. Finally, it proposes a new easy-to-use risk-assessment model for OS prediction.

The Schrödinger equation in a square or rectangle with hard walls is solved in every introductory quantum mechanics course. Solutions for other polygonal enclosures only exist in a very restricted class of polygons, and are all based on a result obtained by Lamé in 1852. Any enclosure can, of course, be addressed by finite element methods for partial differential equations. In this paper, we present a variational method to approximate the low-energy spectrum and wave-functions for arbitrary convex polygonal enclosures, developed initially for the study of vibrational modes of plates. In view of the recent interest in the spectrum of quantum dots of two dimensional materials, described by effective models with massless electrons, we extend the method to the Dirac-Weyl equation for a spin-1/2 fermion confined in a quantum billiard of polygonal shape, with different types of boundary conditions. We illustrate the method's convergence in cases where the spectrum is known exactly, and apply it to cases where no exact solution exists.

RESUMO

The management of genitourinary cancer, including bladder, prostate, renal and testicular cancer, has evolved dramatically in recent years due to a better understanding of tumour genetic mutations, alterations in molecular pathways, and to the development of new kinds of drugs such as targeted therapies and immunotherapies. In the field of immunotherapy, new drugs focused on stimulating, enhancing and modulating the immune system to detect and destroy cancer, have been recently discovered. Research in oncology moves quickly and new data of great relevance for clinical practice are communicated every year. For this reason, a group of experts, focused exclusively on the treatment of genitourinary tumours and who get together every year in the BestGU conference to assess the latest progress in this field have summarized the most important advances in a single review, along with a critical assessment of whether these results should alter daily clinical practice.

Au/Pt nanoparticles show an optimized catalytic activity when compared with Pt nanoparticles because Pt activity is improved by the presence of Au on the surface. It was checked whether a controllable surface composition can be achieved by the simple strategy of varying the Au : Pt ratio. We present an in-depth kinetic simulation study on the influence of Au : Pt ratio on the formation of Au/Pt nanoparticles synthesized in microemulsions. This study is able to explain the resulting nanoarrangement as a function of kinetic parameters such as Au : Pt ratio and intermicellar exchange rate. The role of the micelles as a dosing pump of the Au precursor explains that a higher Au amount results in a Au reduction which takes place over a longer period of time. It implies that Au is deposited until longer stages of the synthesis, so Au is present at the nanoparticle surface. Micelles as reaction media produce a minor impact on Pt due to its slower reduction. These different kinetic behaviours of Au and Pt give rise to a surface composition which can be tailored by tuning the Au : Pt ratio. Numerical results on surface composition successfully reproduce experimental data and further support the outcomes of the degree of atomic mixing under different Au : Pt ratios.

Indium sulfide (In2S3) thin films have been synthesized on glass substrates using the spray technique (CSP). The S : In molar ratio was varied from 1 to 4 in the starting solution. The Raman analysis confirms the formation of the ß-In2S3 material and the absence of a secondary phase. The EDS analysis reveals that our layers are pure. The thin film surface is free of cracks, as observed in AFM images. Optical transmission achieved 80% in the visible and near infrared region. The refractive index (n) is affected by the changes in the S/In molar ratio. The optical parameters, single oscillator energy (E 0), dispersion energy (E d) and high frequency dielectric constant (ε ∞), are calculated via the Wemple-DiDomenico model. In addition, the photoconductivity kinetics in In2S3 films for S/In = 2 were investigated and analyzed. The I-V characteristics and the photoresponse were also studied.

Understanding migratory patterns is important for predicting and mitigating unwanted consequences of environmental change or anthropogenic challenges on vulnerable species. Wild Atlantic salmon undergo challenging migrations between freshwater and marine environments, and the numbers of salmon returning to their natal rivers to reproduce have declined over several decades. Mortality from sea lice linked to fish farms within their seaward migration routes is proposed as a contributing factor to these declines. Here, we used 31 microsatellite markers to establish a genetic baseline for the main rivers in the Hardangerfjord, western Norway. Mixed stock analysis was used to assign Atlantic salmon post-smolts caught in trawls in 2013-2017 back to regional reporting units. Analyses demonstrated that individuals originating from rivers located in the inner region of the fjord arrived at the outer fjord later than individuals from middle and outer fjord rivers. Therefore, as post-smolts originating from inner rivers also have to migrate longer distances to exit the fjord, these data suggest that inner fjord populations are more likely to be at risk of mortality through aquaculture-produced sea lice, and other natural factors such as predation, than middle or outer fjord populations with earlier exit times and shorter journeys. These results will be used to calibrate models estimating mortality from sea lice on wild salmon for the regulation of the Norwegian aquaculture industry.

The decoration of semiconductors with subnanometer-sized clusters of metal atoms can have a strong impact on the optical properties of the support. The changes induced differ greatly from effects known for their well-studied, metallic counterparts in the nanometer range. In this work, we study the deposition of Cu5 clusters on a TiO2 surface and investigate their influence on the photon-absorption properties of TiO2 nanoparticles via the computational modeling of a decorated rutile TiO2 (110) surface. Our findings are further supported by selected experiments using diffuse reflectance and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The Cu5 cluster donates an electron to TiO2, leading to the formation of a small polaron Ti3+ 3d1 state and depopulation of Cu(3d) orbitals, successfully explaining the absorption spectroscopy measurements at the K-edge of copper. A monolayer of highly stable and well fixated Cu5 clusters is formed, which not only enhances the overall absorption, but also extends the absorption profile into the visible region of the solar spectrum via direct photo-induced electron transfer and formation of a charge-separated state.

Administration of chemotherapy in prostate cancer depends on patient fitness. In unfit patients, physiological impairment determines the optimum treatment. Although no consensus on assessing patient fitness currently exists, this article proposes an algorithm combining the available information for administering chemotherapy, and in particular docetaxel, in unfit patients. It was constructed by reviewing factors that can influence treatment, such as performance status, taxane-related comorbidities and nutritional status. Geriatric scales for prostate cancer patients and alternative treatment regimens for this population are also reviewed. In summary, patients require overall assessment to optimise treatment. Use of docetaxel should be restricted in unfit patients, and other options must be evaluated, because of high toxicity and low efficacy.

Purpose: The aim of this phase II study was to evaluate the activity and safety of the combination of cisplatin and vinorelbine with thoracic radiotherapy in unresectable locally advanced stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The primary endpoint was the objective response rate (ORR). Secondary objectives included toxicity profile, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS). Materials and methods: A total of 48 NSCLC patients were enrolled (median age 60 years, 52% stage IIIA and 48% stage IIIB, 52% adenocarcinoma). Patients received three cycles of chemotherapy every 21 days [intravenous cisplatin 80 mg/m2 and intravenous vinorelbine 25 mg/m2 on day 1 and oral vinorelbine on day 8 (60 mg/m2)] concurrent with radiotherapy (66 Gy, administered at 1.8 Gy per day, five consecutive days per week). Results: ORR was 79.2% (72.9% showing partial response and 6.3% showing complete response). With a median follow-up of 20.7 months, median PFS was 12 months and median OS was 36 months. Grade 3/4 toxicities were: neutropenia (14.5%), anaemia (6.2%), vomiting (2%), and oesophagitis (4.2%). No toxic deaths were reported. Conclusion: This combined regimen shows efficacy and a manageable safety profile. PFS and OS outcomes are encouraging and warrant further research
