RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To show the incidence, as well as the clinical and histopathological characteristics, of patients diagnosed with mammary salivary gland-like carcinomas at our institution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in all women diagnosed with breast cancer at our institution from January 2005 to February 2016. Patients with diagnosis of salivary gland-like breast carcinomas were included. RESULTS: In this period, 6384 patients were diagnosed with breast cancer at our institution; salivary gland-like carcinomas were found in 7 patients (0.1%), adenoid cystic carcinoma was diagnosed in 5 patients (0.07%), acinic cell carcinoma in 1 patient (0.015%) and mucoepidermoid carcinoma in 1 patient (0.015%). The triple-negative subtype was found in all of the tumors. Median follow-up was 66.3 months (range, 1-108 months). No patient developed local or distant recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: Salivary gland-like breast tumors are extremely rare. We found a global incidence of 0.1%. Adenoid cystic, acinic cell and mucoepidermoid carcinomas were the three histologic types diagnosed. Although the triple-negative subtype is mainly found, good prognosis is expected.

RESUMO

Squamous cell carcinoma is a rare thyroid neoplasm that has been described exclusively in adults. We report what appears to be the first example of a primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid gland arising in a background of Hashimoto's thyroiditis in an adolescent female. The tumor was well demarcated, confined to the right thyroid lobe, and did not metastasize, although follow up has been limited. The squamous cell carcinoma was well to moderately differentiated, and the stroma contained an abundant inflammatory infiltrate rich in lymphocytes and eosinophils. The lack of goblet cells, extracellular mucin, and extensive stromal sclerosis excluded the diagnosis of sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma with eosinophilia. Immunohistochemical staining revealed focal expression of cytokeratin 7 and diffuse labeling with cytokeratin AE1/AE3. The squamous cell carcinoma overexpressed p53 protein and showed increased proliferative activity, as evidenced by the high MIB-1 labeling index. In contrast, the tumor did not show immunoreactivity for thyroglobulin or thyroid transcription factor 1.

RESUMO

Gastroduodenal mucosal injury is a widely recognized side effect of non-steroidal antiinflammatory agents (NSAID). Distal small bowel and colon are additional organs of the gastrointestinal tract exposed to deleterious effects of these drugs. Inflammation and ulceration have been described as pathologic damage associated with NSAID. Strictures of colon induced by NSAID are a new entity characterized by diaphragm-like strictures. Most patients present with anemia, obstructive symptoms, diarrhea, or weight loss. Endoscopic dilation, surgical resection, symptomatic treatment, and interruption of NSAID ingestion are treatment of choice. Only 23 cases of NSAID-related, colonic, diaphragm-like strictures have been reported. Here we describe a case of concentric colonic stricture related to naproxen and clinical features of this entity are discussed.
