RESUMO

Objective: To contextualize condom use in the transgender women population utilizing the HIV syndemic framework. Methods: Studies reporting condom use frequency and syndemic factors associated with HIV risk in transgender women were systematically searched. We followed the Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist. Results: Social factors have a proven relationship with using condoms and HIV among transgender women. Syndemic factors, defined as co-occurring adverse factors that interact to contribute to risk behaviors, deserve a specific analysis to develop strategies to face HIV among transgender women. Conclusions: A syndemic perspective allows to generate specific health intervention and prevention policies to protect transgender women.

Prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is higher in transgender populations. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) intervention is successful in reducing HIV acquisition. We aimed to investigate the adherence to oral PrEP by HIV-negative transgender women (TW). We followed the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and the PRISMA Statement. We searched in WoS, OVID, Scopus, MEDLINE, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases. Participation and adherence to the intervention were low for TW compared to cisgender men who have sex with men (cMSM), and it was measured mostly by self-report (72.7%) or tenofovir-diphosphate/emtricitabine triphosphate dried blood spot (45.5%). Awareness should increase and the effect of oral PrEP on gender-affirming hormone therapy should be explained to TW at the beginning of the trials. One limitation is that our sample size was dominated by two Thai studies with TW sex workers. Future studies should evaluate adherence to new PrEP modalities.

RESUMO

The main objective of this research is to analyze the most relevant aspects of the management of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) and the Sustainable and Circular Production Models (SCPMs) in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The bibliometric method was used for the analysis of 190 studies obtained from the Scopus and Latin America and The Caribbean on Health Sciences (LILACS) databases. The systematic review provided information on the main research approaches: identification and characterization; quantification; strategic and interdisciplinary management; and processes for treatment or valorization. Finally, an evaluation of public policies and strategies was performed. The results show that Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia have the highest number of publications on OFMSW. The findings also indicate that both research and policy strategies on SCPMs prioritize bioenergy and biofuels as the leading alternatives for the valorization of OFMSW. It also reflects the relevance of the Circular Economy (CE) and Bioeconomy (BE) as the main drivers of waste recovery and/or valorization in LAC. These aspects are of great interest to governments that are still in the process of implementing SCPMs. However, for those more advanced in this area, it provides valuable information on progress, policy effectiveness, and future actions for improvement.

BACKGROUND: Although Down syndrome (DS) is the most frequent human chromosomal disorder and it causes mainly intellectual disability, its clinical presentation is complex and variable. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to analyze and compare the transcriptome disruption in several brain areas from individuals with DS and euploid controls as a new approach to consider a global systemic differential disruption of gene expression beyond chromosome 21. METHODS: We used data from a DNA microarray experiment with ID GSE59630 previously deposited in the GEO DataSet of NCBI database. The array contained log2 values of 17,537 human genes expressed in several aeras of the human brain. We calculated the differential gene expression (Z-ratio) of all genes. RESULTS: We found several differences in gene expression along the DS brain transcriptome, not only in the genes located at chromosome 21 but in other chromosomes. Moreover, we registered the lowest Z-ratio correlation between the age ranks of 16-22 weeks of gestation and 39-42 years (R2 = 0.06) and the highest Z-ratio correlation between the age ranks of 30-39 years and 40-42 years (R2 = 0.89). The analysis per brain areas showed that the hippocampus and the cerebellar cortex had the most different gene expression pattern when compared to the brain as a whole. CONCLUSIONS: Our results support the hypothesis of a systemic imbalance of brain protein homeostasis, or proteostasis network of cognitive and neuroplasticity process, as new model to explain the important effect on the neurophenotype of trisomy that occur not only in the loci of chromosome 21 but also in genes located in other chromosomes.

DNA methylation and histone posttranslational modifications are epigenetics processes that contribute to neurophenotype of Down Syndrome (DS). Previous reports present strong evidence that nonhistone high-mobility-group N proteins (HMGN) are epigenetic regulators. They play important functions in various process to maintain homeostasis in the brain. We aimed to analyze the differential expression of five human HMGN genes in some brain structures and age ranks from DS postmortem brain samples. Methodology: We performed a computational analysis of the expression of human HMGN from the data of a DNA microarray experiment (GEO database ID GSE59630). Using the transformed log2 data, we analyzed the differential expression of five HMGN genes in several brain areas associated with cognition in patients with DS. Moreover, using information from different genome databases, we explored the co-expression and protein interactions of HMNGs with the histones of nucleosome core particle and linker H1 histone. Results: We registered that HMGN1 and HMGN5 were significantly overexpressed in the hippocampus and areas of prefrontal cortex including DFC, OFC, and VFC of DS patients. Age-rank comparisons between euploid control and DS individuals showed that HMGN2 and HMGN4 were overexpressed in the DS brain at 16 to 22 gestation weeks. From the BioGRID database, we registered high interaction scores of HMGN2 and HMGN4 with Hist1H1A and Hist1H3A. Conclusions: Overall, our results give strong evidence to propose that DS would be an epigenetics-based aneuploidy. Remodeling brain chromatin by HMGN1 and HMGN5 would be an essential pathway in the modification of brain homeostasis in DS.

Los marcadores genéticos del pelaje y malformaciones óseas han permitido caracterizar el perfil genético de más de 400 poblaciones del gato doméstico alrededor del mundo. Hace 15 años se estableció dicho perfil en la ciudad de Cali (Colombia). En este estudio se determinó si el norte y sur de Cali se comportan como subpoblaciones y se comparó el perfil total con el estudio pasado. Se encontró una disminución de la frecuencia alélica de a (no-agouti) y d (dilution), pero un aumento en cinco, especialmente en l (longhair) y c s (siamese). Dichas diferencias pueden atribuirse a la selección humana de características más atractivas y por el flujo génico resultante del crecimiento demográfico de la ciudad, lo que explicaría también el primer reporte de los alelos inhibitor y ticked abyssinian. Se evaluó el equilibrio Hardy-Weinberg para el norte, sur y las dos zonas juntas, usando los loci white spotting y orange, encontrándose desequilibrio en este último para las tres zonas evaluadas debido a un déficit de heterocigotos. Norte y sur se dividieron en dos, y cada sub-muestra presentó equilibrio Hardy-Weinberg, aunque las diferencias en las frecuencias alélicas y heterocigosidades resaltaron microestructura geográfica y una relación entre tiempo de fundación del barrio y heterocigosidad. Norte y sur resultaron ser una población y no subpoblaciones (F ST= 0,0004, D= 0,0017), al igual que las nueve poblaciones colombianas con las que se comparó la presente ciudad. Se sugiere realizar un análisis microgeográfico de flujo génico y la definición de posibles colonias de gatos en Cali.


The coat genetic markers and skeleton abnormalities have allowed characterize the profile from more than 400 domestic cat populations around the world. 15 years ago, that profile was established in the city of Cali (Colombia). In this study it was determined if north and south of the city are subpopulations and it was compared the total profile against past study. A decrease in allele frequency of a (non-agouti) and d (dilution) was found, but an increase of five alleles was found, especially in l (long hair) and c s (siamese). These differences could be attributed to human selection of more attractive characteristics and gene flow resulting from demographic growth city, which would also explain the first report of inhibitor and ticked abyssinian alleles. Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was evaluated for the north, south and both areas together, using white spotting and orange loci, determining disequilibrium in orange for the three evaluated areas due to a heterozygotes deficit. North and south were divided into two, each sub-sample showed Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, although allele frequencies and heterozygosities highlighted microgeographic structure and a relationship between founding time of the neighborhood and heterozygosity. North and south are a single population and aren´t subpopulations (F ST= 0,0004, D= 0,0017), as well as nine Colombian populations with which this city was compared. It is suggested to make a microgeographical gene flow analysis and the definition of possible cat colonies in Cali.
