RESUMO

This research paper reports an enhancement of thermal, optical, mechanical and antibacterial activities of the Polyvinyl alcohol-Nanodiamonds (PVA-NDs) composite required for the food packaging industry. The synthesis of composites was done by the wet processing method. The large surface area of NDs facilitated the robust interaction between the hydroxyl group and macromolecular chains of PVA to enhance the hydrogen bonding of PVA with NDs rather than PVA molecules. Thus, a reduction in PVA diffraction peak intensity was reported. NDs improved the thermal stability by preventing the out-diffusion of volatile decomposition products of PVA. The results also revealed an enhancement in tensile strength (∼60 MPa) and ductility (∼180 %). PVA-NDs composite efficiently blocked the UVC (100 %), most of the part of the UVB (∼85 % above 300 nm), and UVA (∼58 %). Furthermore, enhanced antibacterial activities were reported for PVA-NDs composite against E. coli and S. aureus. NDs accumulated around the bacterial cells prevented essential cellular functions and led to death. Hence, this composite could be a promising candidate for safe, thermally stable, strong, flexible, transparent, UV- resistant antibacterial food packaging material.

RESUMO

In this study, band structure and optical properties of Manganese (Mn) doped ZnO are investigated adopting first-principles study calculations. It is observed that, by addition of Mn in ZnO crystal, the electrical properties like conductivity and dielectric function of material have been improved. The elastic constants for the elements are also calculated which shows that the element is stable after addition of dopant. The computational study is done on CASTEP and Material Studio. The ZnO system is simulated and atoms of Mn has been added replacing Zn atoms. The properties that studied are band structure and optics including conductivity, reflectivity, dielectric function, absorption and refractive index. Furthermore, this study also includes calculation of Elastic constants, XRD Spectra, Phonon dispersion and Temperature profile of doped ZnO systems. The computational study produced promising results and experimental approach can be adopted to reinforce the outcomes of this study.

RESUMO

Lahore (Pakistan), being an industrial city, has high emission of aerosols that affects and contaminates the air quality. Therefore, the abatement/inactivation of aerosols is necessary to restrict their infectious activities. In this project, ionic wind isolated from dielectric barrier discharge plasma (DBD plasma) has been utilized to abate the aerosols trapped in the Surgical Mask and KN95 Respirator. To infer the chemical and elemental detection of ambient aerosols, FTIR and LIBS have been employed. "From the results, it is noteworthy that abatement/removal of aerosols has been successfully carried out by the ionic wind irradiation and highlights the potential of DBD plasma technology in removing the aerosols pollution."

RESUMO

Background Since bilateral nasal packing entails nasal and airway obstruction, this practice consequently leads to oral breathing. The resulting hypoxemia may then negatively impact vital signs, including blood pressure (BP), blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), and heart rate (HR). These systemic effects have a detrimental effect on patients. Objective The objective of this study is to observe the effects of bilateral nasal packing on patients' post-operative vital signs. Materials and methods This prospective study was conducted in the department of otolaryngology - head and neck surgery over a six-month period. The study included 83 post-operative patients with nasal surgery, in which bilateral merocele nasal packing was performed. The patients' pulse oximetry, systolic and diastolic BP, and HR were recorded four times the night before and after surgery. A statistical analysis was performed, and the mean values, standard deviation, and range were calculated. A paired sample t-test was also applied. The results are presented in figures and tables. Results The mean age of the participants was 27.65 ± 10.72 years, and 56 (67.5%) were male. Septoplasty was the most common surgery performed, with 63 participants having undergone this procedure (75.9%). When the pre-operative mean values of systolic and diastolic BP, SpO2, and HR were compared with the post-operative mean values, when a bilateral nasal pack was in place, a significant increase was found in all, with a p-value of <0.001 in each. Conclusion Bilateral nasal packing affects patients' vital signs by significantly increasing diastolic and systolic BP and decreasing SpO2. The HR is also significantly increased when packing is in place.

RESUMO

Greenly synthesized nanoparticles have garnered attention due to their low environmental footprint, but impurities limit their applications. A novel semi-organic method for synthesizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using bio-based chelating fuels (Beta vulgaris subsp., Spinacia oleracea, and Ipomoea batatas) reduces the undesirable impurities. The study also showcases the impact of bio-based chelating fuel on various characteristics of AgNPs in comparison to synthetic chelating fuel. The antimicrobial efficacy of the synthesized AgNPs in conjunction with honey was also assessed against E. coli. The XRD analysis showed cubic structure of AgNPs. The FESEM and TEM analysis showed that the well-connected spherical-shaped AgNPs (∼3-120 nm diameter) while EDS confirmed the presence of Ag in all samples. The TEM analysis also revealed layers of carbonates in AgNPs synthesized using bio-based chelating fuels. XPS investigation confirmed the absence of any prominent impurities in prepared samples and AgNPs have not experienced oxidation on their surface. However, notable surface charging effects due to the uneven conductivity of the particles were observed. The broth dilution method showed that all mixtures containing AgNPs in combination with honey exhibited a significant bacterial growth reduction over a period of 120 h. The highest growth reduction of ∼75 % is obtained for the mixture having AgNPs (Ipomoea batatas) while the least growth reduction of ∼51 % is obtained for the mixture having AgNPs (Beta vulgaris subsp.). The findings affirm that AgNPs can be successfully synthesized using bio-based chelating fuels with negligible ecological consequences and devoid of contaminants. Moreover, the synthesized AgNPs can be employed in conjunction with honey for antibacterial purposes.

RESUMO

Enormous consumption of fossil fuel resources has risked energy accessibility in the upcoming years. The price fluctuation and depletion rate of fossil fuels instigate the urgent need for searching their reliable substitute. The current study tries to address these issues by presenting butanol as a replacement for gasoline in SI engines at various speeds and loading conditions. The emission and performance parameters were ascertained for eight distinct butanol-gasoline fuel blends. The oxygenated butanol substantially increases engine efficiency and boosts power with lower fuel consumption. The carbon emissions were also observed to be lower in comparison with gasoline. Furthermore, the Artificial Intelligence (AI) approach was used in predicting engine performance running on the butanol blends. The correlation coefficients for the data training, validation, and testing were found to be 0.99986, 0.99942, and 0.99872, respectively. It was confirmed that the ANN predicted results were in accordance with the established statistical criteria. ANN was paired with Response Surface Methodology (RSM) technique to comprehend the influence of the sole design parameters along with their statistical interactions controlling the responses. Similarly, the R2 value of responses in case of RSM were close to unity and mean relative errors (MRE) were confined under specified range. A comparative study between ANN and RSM models unveiled that the ANN model should be preferred. Therefore, a joint utilization of the RSM and ANN can be more effective for reliable statistical interactions and predictions.

RESUMO

Background Mortality audit is important for healthcare workers, but this data is lacking in developing countries. It helps to provide material about the cause of death, mortality rate, age, and gender. In a surgical department, such information can help identify key public health challenges that are contributing to morbidity and mortality, and this information can help healthcare workers better tackle those pathologies and focus on their prevention and treatment. Materials and methods A retrospective study was conducted at the Department of ENT - Head and Neck Surgery, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital, Islamabad. Five-year data was collected from the mortality register of the ward from January 2019 to December 2023, including the age, gender, surgical diagnosis, course of hospital stay, and cause of death. The collected data was statistically analyzed and presented in the form of tables and figures. Results A total of 53 deaths in 3890 admissions were found on record, with an overall mortality rate of 1.4%. The median age of participants was 61.5 years, with a preponderance of the male gender (n=34; 64.2%). The most common cause of death was head and neck malignancy (n=39; 73.6%), followed by head and neck abscesses (n=9; 17%). The least common cause of death was diphtheria (n=2; 3.8%). Conclusion Death was more common in old-age patients, with more prevalence in the male population. The most common cause of mortality was head and neck malignancy. The total death count almost remained constant through the years.

RESUMO

Biopolymers such as nucleic acids and proteins exhibit dynamic backbone folding, wherein site-specific intramolecular interactions determine overall structure. Proteins then hierarchically assemble into supramolecular polymers such as microtubules, that are robust yet dynamic, constantly growing or shortening to adjust to cellular needs. The combination of dynamic, energy-driven folding and growth with structural stiffness and length control is difficult to achieve in synthetic polymer self-assembly. Here we show that highly charged, monodisperse DNA-oligomers assemble via seeded growth into length-controlled supramolecular fibers during heating; when the temperature is lowered, these metastable fibers slowly disassemble. Furthermore, the specific molecular structures of oligomers that promote fiber formation contradict the typical theory of block copolymer self-assembly. Efficient curling and packing of the oligomers - or 'curlamers' - determine morphology, rather than hydrophobic to hydrophilic ratio. Addition of a small molecule stabilises the DNA fibers, enabling temporal control of polymer lifetime and underscoring their potential use in nucleic-acid delivery, stimuli-responsive biomaterials, and soft robotics.

RESUMO

Bacterial antimicrobial resistance (BAMR) seems to pose the greatest threat to public health, food safety, and agriculture in this century. The development of novel efficient antimicrobial agents to combat bacterial infections has become a global issue. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) appeared as a feasible alternative to antibiotics. However, Ag NPs face cost, toxicity, and aggregation issues which limit their antibacterial activity. This work aims to stabilize Ag NPs with enhanced antimicrobial activity at comparatively lower Ag concentrations to prevent bacterial infections. For this purpose, the Ag core was covered with nanodiamonds (NDs). Ag-NDs composite have been synthesized by microplasma technique. TEM analysis confirmed the presence of both Ag and NDs in the Ag-NDs composite. A particle size (∼19 nm) was reported for Ag-NDs at the highest concentration as compared to Ag NPs (∼3 nm). The conduction band of the diamond acted as an extremely strong reducing agent for Ag NPs. The large surface area of NDs stabilized the Ag NPs. A redshift (∼400 nm-406 nm) in UV-visible spectra of the Ag-NDs composite indicated the formation of bigger-sized Ag NPs after incorporating NDs. XRD and LIBS analysis verified the increase in intensity of Ag-NPs by increasing ND concentration. The presence of functional groups including OH, CH, and Ag/Ag2O was confirmed by FTIR. Bacterial inhibition growth appeared to be a dose-dependent process. The minimum inhibition concentration value of Ag-NDs composite at the highest NDs concentration against E. coli (∼ 0.69 µg/ml) and S. aureus (∼44 µg/ml). This is the first study to report the smallest MIC for E. coli (<1 µg/ml). Ag-ND composites emerged to be more efficient than Ag NPs and preferred to be used against BAMR. The enhanced antibacterial activity of the Ag-NDs composite makes it a potential candidate for antibiotics, food products, and pesticides.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of paratuberculosis in cattle and buffaloes at twelve public dairy farms in Punjab, Pakistan. Methods: A total of 2181 more than two-year-old animals (1242 cattle and 939 buffaloes) were tested by avian tuberculin, i.e., killed purified protein derivative (PPD) of Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis and indirect ELISA. Blood and fecal samples were collected from tuberculin positive animals. These samples were further processed by indirect ELISA. The data were analyzed using frequency analysis and logistic analysis procedures. Results: The prevalence of paratuberculosis at public dairy farms was 3.8%, as determined by tuberculin + ELISA test. It varied from 0.71-13.5% with a 100% herd prevalence. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that species, milk production, total animals, total small ruminants, and total buffaloes were significantly associated with the occurrence of paratuberculosis. Odd ratio analysis revealed that with a one-kilogram increase in body weight, there will be a 0.006% increase in disease occurrence. With the increase in one animal in small ruminants and buffaloes, there will be 0.008% and 0.42% greater chances of developing paratuberculosis, respectively. Bivariate logistic regression analysis of cattle and buffaloes revealed that farm number, age, and total number of cattle were significantly associated with the occurrence of paratuberculosis. A one-month increase in lactation length increases the chance of tuberculosis by 0.004%; similarly, a one-liter increase in milk production increases the chance of disease by 10%. With each additional buffalo in the herd, there will be a 0.007% greater chance for the occurrence of paratuberculosis. Conclusion: This study concluded that tuberculin testing can be used in conjunction with ELISA to screen animals for paratuberculosis in countries with scarce resources, such as Pakistan. The efficacy of disease diagnosis can be improved by combining multiple tests.

RESUMO

Hybrid nanofluids (HNFs) of metallic oxide-based nanoparticles (NPs) have been prepared in different basefluids (BFs) employing the thermal plasma technique. NPs of ZnO-MgO were directly dispersed into pristine coolant, engine oil, distilled water (DW), and coconut oil. Plasma was generated between two identical electrodes applying 8.0 kV at the ambient conditions and proved economically viable in preparing stable HNFs. X-ray Diffractometry (XRD) showed ZnO and MgO NPs possessed hexagonal and cubic crystal structures, respectively. The band gap is calculated through UV-visible spectroscopy. The thermal conductivity (TC) of the HNFs has been measured using a thermal conductivity analyzer based on the transient hot wire method. The band gaps of pristine coolant and its HNFs were obtained to be 3.35 eV and 3.33 eV, respectively. In engine oil and its HNFs, band gaps of 3.16 eV and 3.02 eV have been extracted. There appears to be a slight reduction in band gap for coolant and engine oil-based HNFs. The band gap value of coconut oil-based HNFs was 4.05 eV, which showed a higher value than the pristine coconut oil-based HNFs (3.95 eV). The band gap calculated in the case of DW-based HNFs was 3.79 eV. TC of HNFs with volume concentration of 0.019 % for DW, 0.020 % for coolant, 0.016 % for engine oil, and 0.017 % for coconut oil were tested between 20 and 60 °C. An increase in TC was observed with the rise in temperature of the HNFs. Maximum increment in TC was observed at 60 °C for coolant-based HNFs, which was 19 %, followed by DW (18%), coconut oil (18%), and engine oil (16%), respectively. DW-based HNFs can be used as a coolant and optical filter for optoelectronics devices like photovoltaic cells for better performance. The study underscores precise control of NPs size as pivotal for band gap influence. HNFs hold promise as the next-gen heat transfer fluids (HTFs), revolutionizing thermal conductivity across industries. This research lays a firm foundation for plasma-synthesized HNFs' application in enhanced heat transfer and optoelectronic devices. Coolant-based HNFs excel in thermal conductivity, addressing heat transfer challenges.

RESUMO

The study aimed to determine if deranged liver function tests (LFTs) can predict severe dengue or mortality. It included 135 dengue patients, with a mean age of 30.9 ± 12.09 years. Among the patients, 82 (60.7%) were under 30 years of age. Nearly half of the patients (64, 47. 4%) had some degree of liver damage indicated by deranged LFTs, 27 (42.1%) had elevated alanine transaminase (ALT), 7 (10.9%) had increased bilirubin, and 30 (46.9%) had high values of alkaline phosphatase (ALP). However, only elevated ALP levels were positively correlated with mortality (Pearson's R = 0.282, p = <0.05). The mean bilirubin was 11.711 ± 8.602 umol/l, and the mean values of ALT and ALP were 107 ± 240 and 113.571 ± 59.91 IU/L, respectively, which were higher than the normal. The study findings suggested that hepatic derangement is a common occurrence in dengue patients, and increased ALP levels could be an indicator of a higher risk of mortality. These findings can help improve patient care by identifying the potential risk factors for mortality. Key Words: Dengue, Liver function tests, Alanine transaminase, Alkaline phosphatase.

RESUMO

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were surface functionalized using four distinct chemical moieties (amidoxime, hydrazone, ethylenediamine (EDA), and diethylenetriamine (DETA)), producing modified HNTs (H1-H4) capable of binding with Cr(vi) ions. Advanced techniques like FTIR, XRD, SEM, and EDX provided evidence of the successful functionalization of these HNTs. Notably, the functionalization occurred on the surface of HNTs, rather than within the interlayer or lumen. These decorated HNTs were effective in capturing Cr(vi) ions at optimized sorption parameters, with adsorption rates ranging between 58-94%, as confirmed by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The mechanism of adsorption was further scrutinized through the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. Langmuir isotherms revealed the nearest fit to the data suggesting the monolayer adsorption of Cr(vi) ions onto the nanotubes, indicating a favorable adsorption process. It was hypothesized that Cr(vi) ions are primarily attracted to the amine groups on the modified nanotubes. Quantum chemical calculations further revealed that HNTs functionalized with hydrazone structures (H2) demonstrated a higher affinity (interaction energy -26.33 kcal mol-1) for the Cr(vi) ions. This can be explained by the formation of stronger hydrogen bonds with the NH moieties of the hydrazone moiety, than those established by the OH of oxime (H1) and longer amine chains (H3 and H4), respectively. Overall, the findings suggest that these decorated HNTs could serve as an effective and cost-efficient solution for treating water pollution.

RESUMO

In this study, biochar (BC) and hydrochar (HC) composites were synthesized with natural kaolinite clay and their properties, stability, carbon (C) sequestration potential, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) toxicity, and impacts on maize germination and growth were explored. Conocarpus waste was pretreated with 0%, 10%, and 20% kaolinite and pyrolyzed to produce BCs (BC, BCK10, and BCK20, respectively), while hydrothermalized to produce HCs (HC, HCK10, and HCK20, respectively). The synthesized materials were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope analyses, Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, surface area, proximate analyses, and chemical analysis to investigate the distinction in physiochemical and structural characteristics. The BCs showed higher C contents (85.73-92.50%) as compared to HCs (58.81-61.11%). The BCs demonstrated a higher thermal stability, aromaticity, and C sequestration potential than HCs. Kaolinite enriched-BCs showed the highest cation exchange capacity than pristine BC (34.97% higher in BCK10 and 38.04% higher in BCK20 than pristine BC), while surface area was the highest in kaolinite composited HCs (202.8% higher in HCK10 and 190.2% higher in HCK20 than pristine HC). The recalcitrance index (R50) speculated a higher recalcitrance for BC, BCK10, and BCK20 (R50 > 0.7), minimal degradability for HCK10 and HCK20 (0.5 < R50 < 0.7), and higher degradability for biomass and HC (R50 < 0.5). Overall, increasing the kaolinite enrichment percentage significantly enhanced the thermal stability and C sequestration potential of charred materials, which may be attributed to changes in the structural arrangements. The ∑ total PAHs concentration in the synthesized materials were below the USEPA's suggested limits, indicating their safe use as soil amendments. Germination indices reflected positive impacts of synthesized charred materials on maize germination and growth. Therefore, we propose that kaolinite-composited BCs and HCs could be considered as efficient and cost-effective soil amendments for improving plant growth.

RESUMO

In this study, BaZr0.87Y0.1M0.03O3-δ perovskite electrolytes with sintering aids (M = Mn, Co, and Fe) were synthesized by a sustainable approach using spinach powder as a chelating agent and then compared with chemically synthesized BaZr0.87Y0.1M0.03O3-δ (M = Mn, Co, and Fe) electrolytes for intermediate temperature SOFCs. This is the first example of such a sustainable synthesis of perovskite materials with sintering aids. Structural analysis revealed the presence of a cubic perovskite structure in BaZr0.87Y0.1M0.03O3-δ (M = Mn, Co, and Fe) samples synthesized by both green and conventional chemical methods. No significant secondary phases were observed in the samples synthesized by a sustainable approach. The observed phenomena of plane shift were because of the disparities between ionic radii of the dopants, impurities, and host materials. The surface morphology analysis revealed a denser microstructure for the electrolytes synthesized via green routes due to metallic impurities in the organic chelating agent. The absence of significant impurities was also observed by compositional analysis, while functional groups were identified through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Conductivity measurements showed that BaZr0.87Y0.1M0.03O3-δ (M = Mn, Co, and Fe) electrolytes synthesized by oxalic acid have higher conductivities compared to BaZr0.87Y0.1M0.03O3-δ (M = Mn, Co, and Fe) electrolytes synthesized by the green approach. The button cells employing BaZr0.87Y0.1Co0.03O3-δ electrolytes synthesized by the chemical and green routes achieved peak power densities 344 and 271 mW·cm-2 respectively, suggesting that the novel green route can be applied to synthesize SOFC perovskite materials with minimal environmental impact and without significantly compromising cell performance.

RESUMO

The current study aimed to explore the anti-diabetic effect of aqueous extracts of Gymnema sylvestre, Trigonella foenum-graecum and mixture of both the plants in alloxan-induced diabetic rabbits. A total of 30 rabbits were grouped into six equal groups as: normal control, diabetic control, diabetic treated with 300 mg/kg body weight (bw) G. sylvestre, diabetic treated with 300 mg/kg bw T. foenum-graecum, diabetic treated with 300 mg/kg bw mixture of both the plants and diabetic treated with 500 mg/kg bw metformin for 4 weeks. Diabetes was induced to all the study group animals except normal control by intravenous administration of alloxan monohydrate (80 mg/kg bw). Blood glucose was measured by glucometer and other biochemical parameters were determined through various kit methods. Serum insulin was measured through ELISA kit method. Results showed that both the plants and metformin significantly (p < .05) decreased the fasting blood glucose. Hypoglycemic activity of aqueous extract of G. sylvestre and metformin was found slightly higher than aqueous extract of T. foenum-graecum and the mixture of both the plants. However, a significant (p < .05) rise in insulin secretion was observed in studied plants extract treated rabbits. Serum urea, creatinine, and liver enzymes were found reduced significantly (p < .05) in treated rabbits whereas packed cell volume was also returned to normal in treated animals as compared to control group. The study concluded that G. sylvestre and T. foenum-graecum extracts have comparable effects with metformin in normalizing the blood glucose level and have more pronounced effect than metformin in restoring the serum biochemical parameters to normal levels. Hence, these plants may be the good alternative medicine in managing the diabetes mellitus.

RESUMO

Radon and its progenies found in water indicate the existence of seismically active faults in the region. However, exposure to high levels of radon can also result in radiation-related health risks. This study focuses on radon-based active tectonic studies along the Muzaffarabad Fault in the core of the Hazara-Kashmir Syntaxis (HKS), NW Himalayas, Pakistan. In this study, spring water samples were collected along roadside of Jhelum Valley and in close proximity to the Muzaffarabad Fault in Pakistan using Radon Thoron Monitor (RTM1688-2). The results of the study showed that the radon concentrations in the water samples ranged from 1.895 to 17.097 Bq/l. The study found that the highest radon concentration was observed in the samples collected closest to the fault, while the lowest concentration was observed in the samples collected further away. The statistical analysis between the radon concentration and the distance from the fault showed a strong inverse relationship (R2=0.73). The study also found that 68% of the sampling sites had radon concentrations that exceeded the maximum contamination level (MCL) set by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The higher radon concentrations in the springs water suggest the probability of earthquake, which in turn poses potential health risks for the local population. The findings suggest that the measurement of radon concentration in water can be used as a tool for identifying seismically active faults in the region.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging environmental pollutants worldwide, posing potential health risks. Moreover, MPs may act as vectors for other contaminants and affect their fate, transport, and deposition in the environment. Therefore, efficient and economical techniques are needed for the removal of contemporary MPs and contaminants from the environment. The present research study investigated the sorption of phosphorus (P) and ammonium (NH4+) onto date palm waste-derived biochar (BC) from an aqueous solution in the presence of polyamide (PA) and polyethylene (PE) MPs. The BC was prepared at 600 °C, characterized for physio-chemical properties, and applied for P and NH4+ removal via isotherm and kinetic sorption trials. The results of the sorption trials demonstrated the highest removal of NH4+ and P was obtained at neutral pH 7. The highest P sorption (93.23 mg g-1) by BC was recorded in the presence of PA, while the highest NH4+ sorption (103.76 mg g-1) was found with co-occurring PE in an aqueous solution. Sorption isotherm and kinetics models revealed that P and NH4+ removal by MP-amended BC followed chemisorption, electrostatic interaction, precipitation, diffusion, and ion exchange mechanisms. Overall, co-existing PA enhanced the removal of P and NH4+ by 66% and 7.7%, respectively, while co-existing PE increased the removal of P and NH4+ by 55% and 30%, respectively, through the tested BC. Our findings suggested that converting date palm waste into BC could be used as a competent and economical approach to removing P and NH4+ from contaminated water. Furthermore, microplastics such as PE and PA could assist in the removal of P and NH4+ from contaminated water using BC.
