RESUMO

In this report, two polymeric matrix systems at macro and nanoscales were prepared for efficacious fungicide delivery. The macroscale delivery systems used millimeter-scale, spherical beads composed of cellulose nanocrystals and poly(lactic acid). The nanoscale delivery system involved micelle-type nanoparticles, composed of methoxylated sucrose soyate polyols. Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.), a destructive fungus affecting high-value industrial crops, was used as a model pathogen against which the efficacy of these polymeric formulations was demonstrated. Commercial fungicides are applied on plants frequently to overcome the transmission of fungal infection. However, fungicides alone do not persist on the plants for a prolonged period due to environmental factors such as rain and airflow. There is a need to apply fungicides multiple times. As such, standard application practices generate a significant environmental footprint due to fungicide accumulation in soil and runoff in surface water. Thus, approaches are needed that can either increase the efficacy of commercially active fungicides or prolong their residence time on plants for sustained antifungal coverage. Using azoxystrobin (AZ) as a model fungicide and canola as a model crop host, we hypothesized that the AZ-loaded macroscale beads, when placed in contact with plants, will act as a depot to release the fungicide at a controlled rate to protect plants against fungal infection. The nanoparticle-based fungicide delivery approach, on the other hand, can be realized via spray or foliar applications. The release rate of AZ from macro- and nanoscale systems was evaluated and analyzed using different kinetic models to understand the mechanism of AZ delivery. We observed that, for macroscopic beads, porosity, tortuosity, and surface roughness governed the efficiency of AZ delivery, and for nanoparticles, contact angle and surface adhesion energy were directing the efficacy of the encapsulated fungicide. The technology reported here can also be translated to a wide variety of industrial crops for fungal protection. The strength of this study is the possibility of using completely plant-derived, biodegradable/compostable additive materials for controlled agrochemical delivery formulations, which will contribute to reducing the frequency of fungicide applications and the potential accumulation of formulation components in soil and water.

This study aimed to identify the optimum level of supplementary feeds on the carcass traits and meat quality of Jamuna basin lambs. Forty selected lambs were divided into four treatments such as T0 (no concentrate supplementation), T1 (1% concentrate feed), T2 (1.5% concentrate feed) and T3 (2% concentrate feed) having ten lambs per treatment. The data were analyzed through Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with SAS software. Hot carcass, dressing percentage, head, leg, neck, loin, heart, and spleen weight were showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher values with increasing concentrate feed. The crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE) and ash values were significantly increased (p < 0.001) except T2 treatment. The ultimate pH was significantly increased except T2 and cooked pH was significantly decreased (p < 0.001) except T3 treatment. Drip loss and cooking loss (CL) % had significantly reduced (p < 0.001) except T3 treatment. The water holding capacity (WHC) % was significantly increased (p < 0.001) except T3 treatment. The score of color, juiciness and tenderness were significantly different (p < 0.001). Flavor and overall acceptability score were significantly increased (p < 0.05) in different treatments. The color values L* and b* had significantly changed (p < 0.001) and a* value was found significantly higher (p < 0.05) in all treatments. Hence, 12 months of aged lambs with 1.5% concentrate feed showed better performances on carcass, nutritional, physicochemical, sensory and instrumental color values to increase the carcass and the meat quality of lambs.

Diabetes is a common metabolic disease indicated by unusually high plasma glucose level that can lead to major complications such as diabetic neuropathy, retinopathy, and cardiovascular diseases. One of the effective therapeutic managements of the disease is to reduce postprandial hyperglycemia through inhibition of α-glucosidase, a carbohydrate-hydrolyzing enzyme to retard overall glucose absorption. In recent years, a plenty of research works have been conducted looking for novel and effective α-glucosidase inhibitors (AGIs) from natural sources as alternatives for the synthetic AGI due to their unpleasant side effects. Plants and herbs are rich with secondary metabolites that have massive pharmaceutical potential. Besides, studies showed that phytochemicals such as flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, anthocyanins, glycosides, and phenolic compounds possess significant inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase enzyme. Malaysia is a tropical country that is rich with medicinal herbs. In this review, we focus on eight Malaysian plants with the potential as AGI to develop a potential functional food or lead compounds against diabetes.

In order to remove the residual nitrogen from the secondary-treated milking centre wastewater, the electrochemical reaction including NH4-N oxidation and NOx-N reduction has been known as a relatively simple technique. Through the present study, the electrochemical reactor using the Ti-coated IrO2 anode and stainless steel cathode was optimized for practical use on farm. The key operational parameters [electrode area (EA) (cm(2)/L), current density (CD) (A/cm(2)), electrolyte concentration (EC) (mg/L as NaCl), and reaction time (RT) (min)] were selected and their effects were evaluated using response surface methodology for the responses of nitrogen and colour removal efficiencies, and power consumption. The experimental design was followed for the central composite design as a fractional factorial design. As a result of the analysis of variance, the p-values of the second-order polynomial models for three responses were significantly fit to the empirical values. The nitrogen removal was significantly influenced by CD, EC, and RT (p < .05), whereas colour removal was significantly governed by EA, CD, RT, the interaction of EA and EC (p < .05). For higher efficiency of nitrogen removal over 90%, the combination of [EA, 20 cm(2)/L; CD, 0.044 A/cm(2); EC, 3.87 g/L as NaCl; RT, 240 min] was revealed as an optimal operational condition. The investigation on cathodic reduction of NOx-N may be required with respect to nitrite and nitrate separately as a future work.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have already become major killers in Bangladesh. Once NCDs are developed, they become chronic health and economic problems. Their primary prevention is linked to their common risk factors. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of NCD risk factors with a focus on their clustering in Bangladeshi adults. METHODS: This nationally representative study was done in 4,073 (1,812 men and 2,261 women) adults aged 25 years or older selected from rural and urban households. Multistage cluster sampling design was used. Selected variables were in line with steps I and II of WHO stepwise surveillance except alcohol. RESULTS: Forty-four percent used tobacco in any form. Almost 93% did not consume adequate fruit and vegetables (5 servings or more). Thirty eight percent had low physical activity level (<600 MET-minutes/week). One-quarter (26%) were overweight (body mass index > =25 kg/m^2). Twenty-one percent had hypertension (blood pressure > =140/90 mmHg or medication) and about 5% had documented diabetes. Upon examination of risk factor clustering, we observed that 38% had at least three risk factors. After this threshold, clustering suddenly dropped down to a fairly low level. Using this threshold as a cut-off, clustering of risk factors was associated with age, male gender, urban residence, educational levels and quality of house in multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION: Prevalence of NCD risk factors is fairly high in Bangladeshi adults with a tendency of clustering. If a risk factor such as hypertension is detected, a closer look for other risk factors has to be given in both at clinical and public health settings. Clustering raises risk by more than a summation of risk factors. Our findings, therefore, suggest that Bangladesh could expect a significant increase in NCDs in near future.

Cinnamon bark ( CINNAMOMUM ZEYLANICUM) is used extensively as an antimicrobial material and currently is being increasingly used in Europe by people with type II diabetes to control their glucose levels. In this paper we describe the action of cinnamon oil, its major component, TRANS-cinnamaldehyde, and an analogue, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy- TRANS-cinnamaldehyde against bacterial acetyl-CoA carboxylase in an attempt to elucidate the mechanism of action of this well-known antimicrobial material. These natural products inhibited the carboxyltransferase component of ESCHERICHIA COLI acetyl-CoA carboxylase but had no effect on the activity of the biotin carboxylase component. The inhibition patterns indicated that these products bound to the biotin binding site of carboxyltransferase with TRANS-cinnamaldehyde having a K (i) value of 3.8 ± 0.6 mM. The inhibition of carboxyltransferase by 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy- TRANS-cinnamaldehyde was analyzed with a new assay for this enzyme based on capillary electrophoresis. These results explain, in part, the antibacterial activity of this well-known antimicrobial material.

The stem bark of Feronia limonia (Fam. Rutaceae) yielded (-)-(2S)-5,3'-dihydroxy-4'-methoxy-6",6"-dimethylchromeno-(7,8,2",3")-flavanone along with several known compounds including an alkaloid, five coumarins, a flavanone, a lignan, three sterols and a triterpene. The structures of these compounds were determined by spectroscopic methods, mainly 1D and 2D NMR. The antimicrobial screening of compounds by a microdilution technique resulted in MICs in the range 25-100 microg/ml. Other biological activities of the known compounds are also discussed.
