RESUMO

Public transportation plays a critical role in meeting transportation demands, particularly in densely populated areas. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of public health measures, including the need to prevent the spread of the virus through public transport. The spreading of the virus on a passenger ship is studied using the Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) model and Monte Carlo simulation. A particular focus was the context of Bangladesh, a populous maritime nation in South Asia, where a significant proportion of the population utilizes passenger ships to meet transportation demands. In this regard, a turbulence model is used, which simulates the airflow pattern and determines the contamination zone. Parameters under investigation are voyage duration, number of passengers on board, social distance, the effect of surgical masks, and others. This study shows that the transmission rate of SARS-CoV-2 infection on public transport, such as passenger ships, is not necessarily directly proportional to voyage duration or the number of passengers onboard. This model has the potential to be applied in various other modes of transportation, including public buses and airplanes. Implementing this model may help to monitor and address potential health risks effectively in the public transport networks.

Corn is an economically important yet frost-sensitive crop, injured at the moment of ice nucleation. However, the influence of autumn temperatures on subsequent ice nucleation temperature is unknown. A 10-day chilling treatment under phytotron conditions ("mild", 18/6°C) or ("extreme", 10/5°C) generated no-visible damage but induced changes in the cuticle of the four genotypes in this study. The putatively more cold hardy Genotypes 884 and 959 leaves nucleated at colder temperatures compared to the more sensitive Genotypes 675 and 275. After chilling treatment, all four genotypes displayed warmer ice nucleation temperatures, with Genotype 884 expressing the largest shift to warmer nucleation temperatures. Cuticular hydrophobicity reduced while cuticular thickness remained unchanged under the chilling treatment. By contrast, under five-week field conditions, cuticle thickness increased in all genotypes, with Genotype 256 expressing a significantly thinner cuticle. FTIR spectroscopy revealed increases in the spectral regions of cuticular lipids in all genotypes after phytotron chilling treatment, while those spectral regions decreased under field conditions. A total of 142 molecular compounds were detected, with 28 compounds significantly induced under either phytotron or field conditions. Of these, seven compounds were induced under both conditions (Alkanes C31-C33, Ester C44, C46, ß-amyrin, and triterpene). While clear differential responses were observed, chilling conditions preceding a frost modified physical and biochemical properties of the leaf cuticle under both phytotron and field conditions indicating this response is dynamic and could be a factor in selecting corn genotypes better adapted to avoiding frost with lower ice nucleation temperature.

OBJECTIVE: This paper explored the factors that influence the timely initiation of antenatal care (ANC) in Bangladesh. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional survey. SETTING: This study conducted in two rural subdistricts and one urban area from three Northern districts of Bangladesh from August to November 2016. PARTICIPANTS: Women who had a live birth in the last 1 year prior to data collection were enrolled for this study. In each study area, around 900 women were interviewed, and finally, we completed 2731 interviews. PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was timely first ANC from a Medically Trained Provider (MTP). RESULTS: About 43% of pregnancies were detected at their earliest time. The majority of participants (82%) received at least one ANC from an MTP. Only 11% received timely first ANC from an MTP as per the WHO FANC model. The women who detected pregnancy earlier were more likely (adj.OR 1.99, 95% CI 1.31 to 3.01) to receive the timely first ANC. The urban women were more likely (adj.OR 1.78, 95% CI 1.13 to 2.80) to receive the timely first ANC from an MTP than those of the rural women. Besides, their husbands' educational status (adj.OR 1.61, 95% CI 1.0 to 2.60) was significantly associated with the timely first ANC. CONCLUSION: Apart from sociodemographic factors, early pregnancy detection was strongly associated with the timely first ANC visit. Timely initiation of ANC is an opportunity to adhere to all the WHO recommended timely ANC visits for a pregnant woman. The findings suggest maternal, neonatal, and child health programmes to focus on the early detection of pregnancy to ensure universal ANC coverage and its timeliness.

Cuticular waxes are a mixture of hydrophobic very-long-chain fatty acids and their derivatives accumulated in the plant cuticle. Most studies define the role of cuticular wax largely based on reducing nonstomatal water loss. The present study investigated the role of cuticular wax in reducing both low-temperature and dehydration stress in plants using Arabidopsis thaliana mutants and transgenic genotypes altered in the formation of cuticular wax. cer3-6, a known Arabidopsis wax-deficient mutant (with distinct reduction in aldehydes, n-alkanes, secondary n-alcohols, and ketones compared to wild type (WT)), was most sensitive to water loss, while dewax, a known wax overproducer (greater alkanes and ketones compared to WT), was more resistant to dehydration compared to WT. Furthermore, cold-acclimated cer3-6 froze at warmer temperatures, while cold-acclimated dewax displayed freezing exotherms at colder temperatures compared to WT. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis identified a characteristic decrease in the accumulation of certain waxes (e.g., alkanes, alcohols) in Arabidopsis cuticles under cold acclimation, which was additionally reduced in cer3-6. Conversely, the dewax mutant showed a greater ability to accumulate waxes under cold acclimation. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) also supported observations in cuticular wax deposition under cold acclimation. Our data indicate cuticular alkane waxes along with alcohols and fatty acids can facilitate avoidance of both ice formation and leaf water loss under dehydration stress and are promising genetic targets of interest.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the prevalence and determinants of calendar literacy and last menstrual period (LMP) recall among women in Bangladesh. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. SETTINGS: Two rural subdistricts and one urban area from three Northern districts of Bangladesh. PARTICIPANTS: We interviewed 2731 women who had a live birth in the last 1 year. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome variable was LMP recall and the secondary outcome was calendar literacy. RESULTS: The majority of participants (65%) correctly mentioned the current date according to the English calendar while 12% mentioned according to the Bengali calendar. During the interview sessions, we used three different calendars: Bengali, English and Hijri to assess calendar literacy. We asked women to mark the current date using the calendar on the day of the interview. Almost 61% women marked the English calendar, 16% marked the Bengali calendar and 4% marked the Hijri calendar correctly. Sixty-three per cent women were found as calendar literate who marked any of the calendars. Among the participants, 58% had calendars available at their home and only 10% of women used calendars to track their LMPs. Overall, 53% women were able to recall their recent LMP. Among the calendar literate, 60% could recall their LMPs. Factors found associated with recalling LMP were: completed eight or more years of schooling (adj.OR 1.39), primigravida (adj.OR 1.88), the richest wealth quintile (adj.OR 1.55) and calendar literacy (adj.OR 1.59). CONCLUSIONS: Despite having reasonable calendar literacy and availability, the use of calendars for tracking LMP found very low. Calendar literacy and sociodemographic characteristics were found as the key factors associated with LMP recall. Maternal, neonatal and child health programmes in low-resource settings can promote a simple tool like calendar and target the communities where ultrasound is not available to ensure accurate LMP recall for early pregnancy registration and timely antenatal care coverage.

OBJECTIVE: There is dearth of information on the timeliness of antenatal care (ANC) uptake. This study aimed to determine the timely ANC uptake by a medically trained provider (MTP) as per the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations and the country guideline. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey was done with 2,731 women having livebirth outcome in last one year in Dinajpur, Nilphamari and Rajshahi districts, Bangladesh from August-November,2016. RESULTS: About 82%(2,232) women received at least one ANC from a MTP. Overall, 78%(2,142) women received 4 or more ANCs by any provider and 43%(1168) from a MTP. Only 14%(378) women received their first ANC at the 1st trimester by a MTP. As per 4 schedule visits by the WHO FANC model and the country guideline 8%(203) and 20%(543) women respectively received the first 2 timely ANC by a MTP; where only 1%(32) and 3%(72) received the first 3 visits timely and 0.6%(17) and 1%(29) received all the four timely visits. Factors significantly associated with the first two timely visits are: 10 or above years of schooling of women [adj. OR 2.13 (CI: 1.05, 4.30)] and their husbands [adj. OR 2.40 (CI: 1.31, 4.38)], women's employment [adj. OR 2.32 (CI: 1.43, 3.76)], urban residential status [adj. OR 3.49 (CI: 2.46, 4.95)] and exposure to mass media [adj. OR 1.58 (CI: 1.07, 2.34)] at 95% confidence interval. According to the 2016 WHO ANC model, only 1.5%(40) women could comply with the first two ANC contacts timely by a MTP and no one could comply with all the timely 8 contacts. CONCLUSION: Despite high coverage of ANC utilization, timely ANC visit is low as per both the WHO recommendations and the country guideline. For better understanding, further studies on the timeliness of ANC coverage are required to design feasible intervention for improving maternal and child health.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are a class of plant steroidal hormones that play essential roles in plant growth and development. Systematic studies had first been undertaken concomitantly to determine both the effects of exogenous BR on stress phenotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica napus (rapeseed) seedlings and the expression of stress marker genes in BR-treated and untreated seedlings. When reproducible and convincing evidence of the role of BR in stress tolerance had been obtained, molecular mechanisms underlying the ability of BR to confer tolerance against heat, cold, drought, and salt stress, as well as pathogen resistance were studied with several molecular approaches and tools. The results of these studies have together provided valuable insights into how BRs, through their control of many basic cellular processes and stress responses, promote vigor in plants and prepare the plant to mount a dynamic response upon environmental challenges. Protocols to assess BR effects on abiotic stress tolerance in Arabidopsis and rapeseed seedlings are described here and they can be fine-tuned and adapted for other plant species.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although Bangladesh has made significant progress in reducing maternal and child mortality in the last decade, childbirth assisted by skilled attendants has not increased as much as expected. An objective of the Bangladesh National Strategy for Maternal Health 2014-2024 is to reduce maternal mortality to 50/100,000 live births. It also aims to increase deliveries with skilled birth attendants to more than 80% which remains a great challenge, especially in rural areas. This study explores the underlying factors for the major reliance on home delivery with Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA) in rural areas of Bangladesh. METHODS: This was a qualitative cross-sectional study. Data were collected between December 2012 and February 2013 in Sunamganj district of Sylhet division and data collection methods included key informant interviews (KII) with stakeholders; formal and informal health service providers and health managers; and in-depth interviews (IDI) with community women to capture a range of information. Key questions were asked of all the study participants to explore the question of why women and their families prefer home delivery by TBA and to identify the factors associated with this practice in the local community. RESULTS: The study shows that home delivery by TBAs remain the first preference for pregnant women. Poverty is the most frequently cited reason for preferring home delivery with a TBA. Other major reasons include; traditional views, religious fallacy, poor road conditions, limited access of women to decision making in the family, lack of transportation to reach the nearest health facility. Apart from these, community people also prefer home delivery due to lack of knowledge and awareness about service delivery points, fear of increased chance of having a caesarean delivery at hospital, and lack of female doctors in the health care facilities. CONCLUSIONS: The study findings provide us a better understanding of the reasons for preference for home delivery with TBA among this population. These identified factors can inform policy makers and program implementers to adopt socially and culturally appropriate interventions that can improve deliveries with skilled attendants and thus contribute to the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity in rural Bangladesh.

The plant hormone brassinosteroid (BR) plays essential roles in plant growth and development, while also controlling plant stress responses. This dual ability of BR is intriguing from a mechanistic point of view and as a viable solution for stabilizing crop yields under the changing climatic conditions. Here we report a time course analysis of BR responses under both stress and no-stress conditions, the results of which establish that BR incorporates many stress-related features even under no-stress conditions, which are then accompanied by a dynamic stress response under unfavourable conditions. Found within the BR transcriptome were distinct molecular signatures of two stress hormones, abscisic acid and jasmonic acid, which were correlated with enhanced endogenous levels of the two hormones in BR-treated seedlings. The marked presence of genes related to protein metabolism and modification, defence responses and calcium signalling highlights the significance of their associated mechanisms and roles in BR processes. Functional analysis of loss-of-function mutants of a subset of genes selected from the BR transcriptome identified abiotic stress-related roles for ACID PHOSPHATASE5 (ACP5), WRKY33, JACALIN-RELATED LECTIN1-3 (JAC-LEC1-3) and a BR-RESPONSIVE-RECEPTOR-LIKE KINASE (BRRLK). Overall, the results of this study provide a clear link between the molecular changes impacted by BR and its ability to confer broad-range stress tolerance, emphasize the importance of post-translational modification and protein turnover as BR regulatory mechanisms and demonstrate the BR transcriptome as a repertoire of new stress-related regulatory and structural genes.

BACKGROUND: Brassinosteroids (BRs) play crucial roles in plant development and also promote tolerance to a range of abiotic stresses. Although much has been learned about their roles in plant development, the mechanisms by which BRs control plant stress responses and regulate stress-responsive gene expression are not fully known. Since BR interacts with other plant hormones, it is likely that the stress tolerance conferring ability of BR lies in part in its interactions with other stress hormones. RESULTS: Using a collection of Arabidopsis mutants that are either deficient in or insensitive to abscisic acid (ABA), ethylene (ET), jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA), we studied the effects of 24-epibrassinloide (EBR) on basic thermotolerance and salt tolerance of these mutants. The positive impact of EBR on thermotolerance in proportion to wild type was evident in all mutants studied, with the exception of the SA-insensitive npr1-1 mutant. EBR could rescue the ET-insensitive ein2 mutant from its hypersensitivity to salt stress-induced inhibition of seed germination, but remained ineffective in increasing the survival of eto1-1 (ET-overproducer) and npr1-1 seedlings on salt. The positive effect of EBR was significantly greater in the ABA-deficient aba1-1 mutant as compared to wild type, indicating that ABA masks BR effects in plant stress responses. Treatment with EBR increased expression of various hormone marker genes in both wild type and mutant seedlings, although to different levels. CONCLUSIONS: These results together indicate that the redox-sensitive protein NPR1 (NONEXPRESSOR OF PATHOGENESIS-RELATED GENES1), a master regulator of SA-mediated defense genes, is likely a critical component of EBR-mediated increase in thermotolerance and salt tolerance, but it is not required for EBR-mediated induction of PR-1 (PATHOGENESIS-RELATED1) gene expression; that BR exerts anti-stress effects independently as well as through interactions with other hormones; that ABA inhibits BR effects during stress; and that BR shares transcriptional targets with other hormones.
