Pycnogenol (PYC) is a concentrate of phenolic compounds derived from French maritime pine; its biological activity as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial suggests its use in the treatment of open wounds. A bioadhesive film, loaded with PYC, was prepared by casting, starting with a combination of two biopolymer acqueous solutions: xanthan gum (1% wt/wt) and sodium alginate (1.5% wt/wt), in a 2.5/7.5 (wt/wt) ratio. In both solutions, glycerol (10% wt/wt) was added as plasticizing agent. The film resulted in an adhesive capable to absorb a simulated wound fluid (~ 65% wt/wt within 1 h), therefore suitable for exuding wounds. The mechanical characterization showed that the film is deformable (elastic modulus E = 3.070 ± 0.044 MPa), suggesting adaptability to any type of surface and resistance to mechanical solicitations. PYC is released within 24 h by a sustained mechanism, achieving a maximum concentration of ~ 0.2 mg/mL, that is safe for keratinocytes, as shown by cytotoxicity studies. A concentration of 0.015 mg/mL is reached in the first 5 min after application, at which point PYC stimulates keratinocyte growth. These preliminary results suggest the use of PYC in formulations designed for topical use.

18ß-glycyrrhetinic acid (Gly), a natural compound obtained from licorice, is known both for the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities and for this reason useful for wound treatment. Due to its poor solubility, Gly is not suitable for formulations used in conventional topical products such as gels, foams and creams. Polymeric bioadhesive microparticles (MP), loaded with Gly, were developed to be introduced in the wound bed and swell, once in contact with the exudate, to form a hydrogel in situ able to close the wound. The MP were prepared by spray drying method from the polymeric solution of polysaccharide sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and copolymer Soluplus® (SL). Soluplus® introduction in MP composition, using a 3:1 ratio (CMC/SL wt./wt.), allowed to stabilize Gly in non-crystalline form, favoring the improvement of water solubility, and to obtain a spherical with rugged surface MP morphology. Ex vivo studies showed these MP maintain high swelling capability and are able to form in situ a hydrogel for wound repair. The controlled release of Gly from the hydrogel stimulates keratinocyte growth, potentially supporting the physiological healing processes.

Anti-caries activity of fluoride ions is due to the protection against demineralization and the enhancement of remineralization of tooth enamel. Dentifrices available on the market contain sodium fluoride, sodium monofluorophosphate, stannous fluoride, and amine fluoride as source of these ions. A new compound working both as fluoride ion source and as abrasive was projected. Hybrids based on F- ions intercalated between the lamellae of hydrotalcite-like compounds (HTlc-F), namely MgAl-HTlc-F and ZnAl-HTlc-F, were prepared and characterized. Then, three different percentages (2, 3, and 4%) of both HTlc-F compounds were assayed. After the rheological characterization, the dentifrices containing 3 and 4% of MgAl-HTlc-F and ZnAl-HTlc-F, respectively, resulted to be the most suitable ones. Two novel in vitro methods, "rotary toothbrush method" and "manual brushing method," were developed and used in order to study the F- ions release from the prepared dentifrices. The obtained results showed that the dentifrice containing ZnAl-HTlc-F (4%) was the most effective in releasing fluoride ions. The "rotary toothbrush method" resulted to be the most suitable as the simulation of the brushing movements is standardizable and reproducible.

A concise synthesis of the sulfonic acid-containing MIL-101 MOF catalyst was reported using commercially available materials. A series of characterization of as-synthesized MIL-101-SO3H including SEM, XRD, FTIR, BET and TGA was also demonstrated. Using MIL-101-SO3H as a catalyst, an efficient Nozaki-Hiyama allenylation reaction was achieved to generate various polyfunctionalized α-allenic alcohols in high yield and good selectivity. Taking advantage of the high acidity of the MIL-101-SO3H MOF structure, such transformations were also achieved under mild reaction conditions and short reaction times. Based on our observed evidence during this study, a mechanism was proposed involving a substrate activation/γ-nucleophilic addition reaction sequence. In addition, the MIL-101-SO3H catalyst can be recycled ten times during the Nozaki-Hiyama allenylation reaction without compromising the yield and selectivity.

A novel one-pot aerobic oxidation/Knoevenagel condensation reaction system was developed employing a Cu(ii)/amine bifunctional, basic metal-organic framework (MOF) as the catalyst. The sequential aerobic alcohol oxidation/Knoevenagel condensation reaction was efficiently promoted by the Cu3TATAT MOF catalyst in the absence of basic additives. The benzylidenemalononitrile product was produced in high yield and selectivity from an inexpensive benzyl alcohol starting material under an oxygen atmosphere. The role of the basic functionality was studied to demonstrate its role in the aerobic oxidation and Knoevenagel condensation reactions. The reaction progress was monitored in order to identify the reaction intermediate and follow the accumulation of the desired product. Lastly, results showed that the yield was not significantly compromised by the reuse of a batch of catalyst, even after more than five cycles.

RESUMO

Chiral diols and biphenols catalyze the multicomponent condensation reaction of phenols, aldehydes, and alkenyl or aryl boronates. The condensation products are formed in good yields and enantioselectivities. The reaction proceeds via an initial Friedel-Crafts alkylation of the aldehyde and phenol to yield an ortho-quinone methide that undergoes an enantioselective boronate addition. A cyclization pathway was discovered while exploring the scope of the reaction that provides access to chiral 2,4-diaryl chroman products, the core of which is a structural motif found in natural products.

RESUMO

The volatile fraction from the aerial part of Alchemilla xanthochlora Rothm. (Rosaceae) was obtained by hydrodistillation, and the chemical composition of the obtained oil was determined by GC/FID and GC/MS. Several compounds were found, belonging to the classes of aldehydes, alcohols, terpenes, esters, acids and hydrocarbons. The major constituents were cis-3-hexenol (11.20+/-0.02%), linalool (10.36+/-0.75%), oct-1-en-3-ol (8.98+/-1.43%), and nonanal (7.83+/-0.93%), followed by myrtenol (4.65+/-0.40%), hexadecanoic acid (4.59+/-0.79%), cis-3-hexenyl acetate (3.92+/-0.15%) and alpha-terpineol (3.10+/-0.26%).

RESUMO

The composition of the volatile fraction of two important forage legumes from Italian sub-alpine N.E. pastureland, namely Trifolium pratense L. subsp. pratense (red clover) and T. repens subsp. repens (white clover) were investigated. The volatile oil was obtained from the fresh aerial parts by steam distillation and analyzed by GC/FID and GC/MS. The oil yield was 0.018 and 0.021% (weight/fresh weight basis) for T. pratense and T. repens, respectively. Several classes of compounds were found in both the oils, including alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, terpenes, esters, hydrocarbons, phenolics and acids. Qualitative and quantitative differences were found.
