RESUMO

The Cecropia genus is widely distributed in Latin America including at least 60 species, and some of them are commonly used in traditional medicine for the treatment of several diseases. We used Cecropia pachystachya Trécul to search for quorum sensing (QS) inhibitors compounds and found that the aqueous extract of C. pachystachya leaves is a promising source of substances with this activity. Using as biosensor Chromobacterium violaceum ATCC 31532 and Escherichia coli pSB403, the compounds chlorogenic acid (2), isoorientin (3), orientin (4), isovitexin (6), vitexin (7), and rutin (9) were identified as QS inhibitors. None of these compounds inhibited the growth of neither the used biosensors nor the microorganisms Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 23591, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, used here as growth inhibition controls. Along with the rutin, here we presented for the first time the QS-inhibition potential of the C-glycosyl flavonoids. The prospective of this evidence lead to the use of these compounds as antipathogenic drugs or antifoulants.

RESUMO

Oviposition and predation levels by Speciomerus revoili bruchid beetles were quantified on fruits and seeds of the macaúba palm, Acrocomia aculeata, collected from below mother-trees within the Sarah Kubitschek Park of Brasília, DF, Brazil. A maximum of 12 eggs per fruit were found, with high variations observed between samples. No clear pattern was found for the distribution of the number of eggs per fruit, perhaps due to the artificial conditions of the study area, the absence of dispersers and/or the plasticity in the oviposition behavior of the insect. The number of eggs per fruit was not related to fruit size, but was associated with their availability under the tree-mother. This suggests that the density of eggs per fruit is a balance between the availability of this resource and the number of females in the beetle population. The observed mortality rate, from the egg phase to the final larval stages, was over 75%. About 40% of the seeds of Acrocomia aculeata were predated by Speciomerus revoili.

RESUMO

"Puerto Rico provides an alternative destination for immigrants from the Spanish-speaking Caribbean because the culture is similar to that in the source country. In this study, we use the 1980 [U.S.] Census of Population to examine the importance of relative earnings and culture in the choice of destination. The main finding is the similar pattern of choice of location for immigrants from the Dominican Republic and Cuba. The more educated and more professional immigrants are found in either Puerto Rico or outside the enclave on the [U.S.] mainland. Within this group, those with less time remaining in the labor market and lower English ability are found in Puerto Rico. We find that not all differences in location decision are attributable to differences in reward structure by location."

RESUMO

Nineteen Puerto Rican patients with malignant melanomas in volar and subungual areas were evaluated to define their clinical and histologic characteristics. Ten were male and nine female, with an age span of 36 to 113 years and a median age of 71 years. Sixteen of the lesions were located on the soles or heels of the feet, and three were subungual. Histologically, all nineteen patients exhibited a radial growth phase diagnostic of acral lentiginous melanoma, and twelve of nineteen were Clark's level IV or V. Tumor thickness fluctuated between 0.27 mm and 13.6 mm, with a total of twelve lesions greater than 6 mm. Eleven patients had regional lymph node enlargement at the time of diagnosis; two had regional skin metastasis and one had metastasis to the liver. Survivals ranged from 7 months to 7 years, with an average duration of 2.76 years and an overall mortality of 66% in those patients after a 3-year follow-up. Based on this study, we conclude that the biologic behavior of acral lentiginous melanoma in Puerto Ricans is similar to that reported in other series, with most of the lesions being deeply invasive and correlating with a poor prognosis.
