RESUMO

The use of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) is a cost-effective route to treat sulfate- contaminated waters and precipitate metals. The isolation and characterization of a SRB strain from an AMD in a Brazilian tropical region site was carried out. With a moderately acidic pH (5.5), the C.1 strain began its growth and with continued growth, modified the pH accordingly. The strain under these conditions reduced sulfate at the same rate as an experiment performed using an initial pH of 7.0. The dsrB gene-based molecular approach was used for the characterization of this strain and its phylogenetic affiliation was similar to genus Desulfovibrio sp. The results show an SRB isolate with unexpected sulfate reducing capacity in moderately acidic conditions, bringing new possibilities for the treatment of AMD, as acid water would be neutralized to a mildly acidic condition.

RESUMO

The splanchnic aneurysms, which are complicated by rupture in 25% of cases with a mortality of 25-70%, are usually a surprise during diagnostic tests for other abdominal pathologies or emergency laparotomies. 10 cases treated (8 in elective and 2 in emergency surgery) are presented here: the aneurysm was in celiac trunk (1 patient), common hepatic artery (1 pt.), hepatic artery (2 pts.), gastroduodenal artery (1 pt.), superior mesenteric artery (1 pt.), inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery (1 pt.), right colic artery (1 pt.) and inferior mesenteric artery (1 pt.). There were 1 case of Marfan syndrome and 9 cases of atherosclerosis, 4 of which arteries presenting hyperdynamic flow consequent to occlusions of the superior mesenteric artery and/or the celiac trunk. The 2 cases operated on for hemoperitoneum underwent aneurysmectomy and ligation of the inflow vessels (1 death from pulmonary embolism on 5th postoperative day), whereas the 8 cases electively treated (with no deaths and I case of transient diarrhoeal syndrome) underwent 4 aneurysmal resections with end-to-end arterial reconstruction, 3 PTFE-graft substitutions and 1 autologous saphenous vein substitution. At follow-up (12-74 months; mean 30.6) all the reconstructions resulted successful. These data confirm the consistent indications of the recent Literature suggesting the indication to the surgical treatment of the incidental aneurysms in the splanchnic area.

RESUMO

In a series of 2,538 cases of cirrhosis seen at laparoscopy there were 140 primary liver carcinomas and 19 cases of metastases to a cirrhotic liver out of a total of 167 extrahepatic neoplasms associated with cirrhosis. In an autopsy series of 1,073 cases of cirrhosis there were 190 primary liver carcinomas and 22 cases of metastases to a cirrhotic liver out of a total of 98 extrahepatic neoplasms. In another autopsy series of 498 cases of cirrhosis there were 71 primary liver carcinomas and 18 cases of metastases to a cirrhotic liver out of a total of 58 extrahepatic neoplasms. The laparoscopy series showed a predominance (31.8%) of esophageal tumors associated with cirrhosis, but these tumors rarely gave rise to liver metastases (3.7%); in the autopsy series there was a predominance (35.3%) of tumors of the portal territory, giving rise to metastases in cirrhotic livers in 35.2% of cases.

RESUMO

The presence of hepatitis B surface (HBsAg) and core (HBcAg) antigens was investigated by immunofluorescence in specimens of liver tissue obtained at necrospy in 107 patients with primary hepatic carcinoma. HBsAg was detected in the cytoplasm of liver cells in 16 cases, and in eight of them the antigen was also found in malignant cells. HBcAg, which was present in the nuclei of liver cells in eight cases, was detected in the nuclei of tumour cells in six of these and also in two other cases showing HBsAg, but not HBcAg, in the nonneoplastic tissue. Although most of the primary hepatic carcinomas studied were associated with cirrhotic changes in the non-neoplastic tissue, HBsAg and HBcAg were also detected in the absence of underlying cirrhosis. Hepatitis B virus markers were demonstrated in non-neoplastic tissue, mainly in patients with a well-differentiated carcinoma, and only in these cases were they found also in the neoplastic tissue. These results show that hepatitis B virus antigens, including HBcAg, can be detected in the neoplastic cells of well-differentiated carcinoma of the liver. Although these cells could have been infected after the malignant transformation, a direct oncogenic role of the virus cannot be excluded.
