RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Stress associated with fishing is known to trigger consumption of alcohol and tobacco among fishermen. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of tobacco and alcohol consumption among fishermen in Udupi Taluk in the state of Karnataka, India, and to study associations with health status and job stress. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted among 825 fishermen in Udupi Taluk of Karnataka between January-June 2015, using a two stage cluster sampling procedure. Associations between variables of interest were assessed using multivariable analysis and logistic regression models. RESULTS: The prevalences of consumption of tobacco, alcohol and either of these substances were 64.2%, 45.6% and 86.9% respectively. There was a positive association between alcohol and any form of tobacco consumption with income but none with respondent's job stress and health status. CONCLUSIONS: Our study concluded that fishermen with poor health status are seen more among tobacco and alcohol users.

RESUMO

A small, focussed library of condensed 2H-4-arylaminopyrimidines, with 3-diversity points, based on an initial design by molecular docking study of this scaffold at the active site of the fungal enzyme of cytochrome P450 family, lanosterol 14α-demethylase (CYP51) was synthesized through a one-pot green chemical synthetic protocol. The screening of the synthesised compounds for antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumigatus &Aspergillus niger revealed activity in many of the compounds as comparable to that of fluconazole. Based on the antifungal activity and physicochemical property data of these derivatives, a meaningful SAR has been proposed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) is a common finding with different prevalence rate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of DH and associated risk factors. MATERIALS & METHODS: This cross-sectional survey was done among patients coming to dental hospital. The diagnosis of DH was made as the result of both clinical examination and patient's response. A self-administered structured questionnaire was used to know demography profile, self-reported DH, the activating factors, preventive measures and frequency. Descriptive statistics were obtained and frequency distribution was calculated using Chi square t test at p value <0.05. RESULTS: The total population compromised of 960 patients including 528 males and 432 females. The prevalence of dentine hypersensitivity in this sample was 42.5% and more common among male population (60.8%) and the peak age was between 30 to 39 years (39.2%). Lower anteriors were commonly involved (35.8%) and cold drinks (25.8%) are the main aggravating factor. 6.5% experience it all the time but still some do not take preventive measures. CONCLUSION: There is high prevalence rate of DH and mainly among males. Some of the patients had it all the time but still they do not want to control the problem. RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The percentage of general dental practitioners is very common in India, so the purpose of this study was to assess attitude of general dental practitioners toward root canal treatment (RCT) procedures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 178 dentists (96 males and 82 females) were surveyed using a selfadministered, structured questionnaire pretested through a pilot survey. The questionnaire collected information regarding RCT procedures among participants. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 15. Frequency and percentage distributions were calculated. RESULTS: In the present study most of the participants, i.e. 86.4% reported that they perform (RCT) procedures in posterior teeth. Isolation is mainly done with cotton rolls only (74.6%) and very few are using rubber dam in their practice (3.2%). Radiographs were not taken after every step in most of the cases. Rotary instruments were used in less number of cases and K-files were the most popular instruments (66.2%). Also single sitting RCT was not commonly seen. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This study indicates that most of the general dental practitioners' do not comply with quality standards guidelines such as use of rubber dam as isolation. So dentist should update their knowledge and practices with current techniques and materials through CDE programs.

RESUMO

A major problem commonly observed in denture wearer is the detachment of artifcial tooth/teeth from acrylic denture base. The problem was grave when porcelain teeth used along with the then available denture base materials. The bond formed was purely mechanical and hence debonding of teeth from denture base was a frequent occurrence. Inspite of chemical union between acrylic resin teeth and acrylic denture base material, detachment of teeth particularly anterior teeth is a frequent observation. The objective of the study is to study the effect of change in the surface treatment and surface confguration of ridge lap surface of the teeth on retention of cross-linked acrylic teeth on cross-linked acrylic resin denture base. Sixty specimens were tested for the shear compressive bond strength using instron universal testing machine in KN. Statistical analysis is used. The fndings were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and 't' test. Slight modifcation in the ridge lap surface of artifcial teeth alters the strength of the shear compressive bond. Sand papering of ridge lap surfaces improves the shear compressive bond then the one without any modifcation. Maximum shear compressive bond strength can be increased by application of monomer.
