RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) prevalence in Indian adults who completed 24-Hour Holter monitoring. METHODS: A total of 23,847 patients (36.9 % women) were analyzed for AF duration using a software algorithm. RESULTS: AF was diagnosed in 4153 (17.4 %) patients with a median AF duration of 13 min and 55 s. CONCLUSION: AF prevalence was high and largely untreated. The short duration of AF episodes indicates a low likelihood of detection during clinical visits, highlighting its potential underestimation in Indian healthcare.

The intensive agriculture practices improved the crop productivity but escalated energy inputs (EI) and carbon foot print (CF) which contributes to global warming. Hence designing productive, profitable crop management practices under different production systems with low environmental impact (EI and CF) is the need of the hour. To identify the practices, quantification of baseline emissions and the major sources of emissions are required. Indian agriculture has diversified crops and production systems but there is dearth of information on both EI and CF of these production systems and crops. Hence the present study was an attempt to find hot spots and identify suitable strategies with high productivity, energy use efficiency (EUE) and carbon use efficiency (CUE). Energy and carbon balance of castor, cotton, chickpea, groundnut, maize, rice (both rainfed and irrigated), wheat, sugarcane (only irrigated), pigeon pea, soybean, sorghum, pearl millet (only rainfed) in different production systems was assessed. Field specific data on different crop management practices as well as grain and biomass yields were considered. Rainfed production systems had lower EI and CF than irrigated system. The nonrenewable sources of energy like fertilizer (64 %), irrigation (78 %), diesel fuel (75 %) and electricity (67 %) are the major source of energy input. Rainfed crops recorded higher CUE over irrigated condition. Adoption of technologies like efficient irrigation strategies (micro irrigation), enhancing fertilizer use efficiency (site specific nutrient management or slow release fertilizer), conservation agriculture (conservation or reduced tillage) rice cultivation methods (SRI or Direct seeded rice) were the mitigation strategies. These results will help policy makers and stake holders in adoption of suitable strategies for sustainable intensification.

Soil microbial communities are important drivers of biogeochemical cycling of nutrients, organic matter decomposition, soil organic carbon, and Greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs: CO2, N2O, and CH4) and are influenced by crop and soil management practices. The knowledge on the impact of conservation agriculture (CA) on soil bacterial diversity, nutrient availability, and GHG emissions in semi-arid regions under rainfed conditions is vital to develop sustainable agricultural practices, but such information has not been systemically documented. Hence, studies were conducted for 10 years in rainfed pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L.)-castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) cropping system under semi-arid conditions to assess the effects of tillage and crop residue levels on the soil bacterial diversity, enzyme activity (Dehydrogenase, urease, acid phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase), GHG emissions, and soil available nutrients (Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium). Sequencing of soil DNA through Illumina HiSeq-based 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing technology has revealed that bacterial community responded to both tillage and residue levels. The relative abundance of Actinobacteria in terms of Operational Taxonomic Unit (OTUs) at phyla, class as well as genera level was higher in CA (NTR1: No Tillage + 10 cm anchored residue and NTR2 NT + 30 cm anchored residue) over CT (conventional tillage without crop residues). CA resulted in higher enzyme activities (dehydrogenase, urease, acid phosphatase, and alkaline phosphatase) and reduction in GHG emissions over CT. CA recorded 34% higher and 3% lower OC, as compared to CT, and CTR1, respectively. CA recorded 10, 34, and 26% higher available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium over CT and CTR1, respectively. NTR1 recorded 25 and 38% lower N2O emissions as compared to CTR1 and CTR2, respectively. Whereas only NT recorded 12% higher N2O emissions as compared to CT. Overall, the results of the study indicate that CA improves the relative abundance of soil bacterial communities, nutrient availability, and enzyme activities, and may help to contribute to the mitigation of climate change, and sustainability in rainfed areas.

Hypertension guidelines recommend measuring blood pressure (BP) in both arms at least once. However, this is seldom done due to uncertainties regarding measurement procedure and the implications of finding a clinically important inter-arm BP difference (IAD). This study aimed to provide insight into the prevalence of clinically important IADs in a large Indian primary care cohort. A number of 134678 (37% female) unselected Indian primary care participants, mean age 45.2 (SD 11.9) years, had BP measured in both arms using a standardized, triplicate, automated simultaneous measurement method (Microlife WatchBP Office Afib). On average, there were clinically minor differences in right and left arm BP values: systolic BP 134.4 vs. 134.2 mmHg (p<0.01) and diastolic BP 82.7 vs. 82.6 mmHg (p<0.01), respectively. Prevalence of significant mean systolic IAD between 10 and 15 mmHg was 7813 (5.8%). Systolic IAD ≥ 15 mmHg 2980 (2.2%) and diastolic IAD ≥ 10 mmHg 7151 (5.3%). In total, there were 7595 (5.6%) and 8548 (6.3%) participants with BP above the 140/90 mmHg threshold in only the left or right arm, respectively. Prevalence of participants with elevated BP on one arm only was highest in patients with a systolic IAD ≥ 15 mmHg; 19.1% and 13.7%, for left and right arm, respectively. This study shows that a substantial prevalence of IAD exist in Indian primary care patients. BP is above the diagnostic threshold for hypertension in one arm only for 6% of participants. East Indian Sandalwood (Santalum album L.) is highly valued for its heartwood and its oil. There have been no efforts to comparative study of high and low oil yielding genetically identical sandalwood trees grown in similar climatic condition. Thus we intend to study a genome wide transcriptome analysis to identify the corresponding genes involved in high oil biosynthesis in S. album. In this study, 15 years old S. album (SaSHc and SaSLc) genotypes were targeted for analysis to understand the contribution of genetic background on high oil biosynthesis in S. album. A total of 28,959187 and 25,598869 raw PE reads were generated by the Illumina sequencing. 2.12 million and 1.811 million coding sequences were obtained in respective accessions. Based on the GO terms, functional classification of the CDS 21262, & 18113 were assigned into 26 functional groups of three GO categories; (4,168; 3,641) for biological process (5,758;4,971) cellular component and (5,108;4,441) for molecular functions. Total 41,900 and 36,571 genes were functionally annotated and KEGG pathways of the DEGs resulted 213 metabolic pathways. In this, 14 pathways were involved in secondary metabolites biosynthesis pathway in S. album. Among 237 cytochrome families, nine groups of cytochromes were participated in high oil biosynthesis. 16,665 differentially expressed genes were commonly detected in both the accessions (SaHc and SaSLc). The results showed that 784 genes were upregulated and 339 genes were downregulated in SaHc whilst 635 upregulated 299 downregulated in SaSLc S. album. RNA-Seq results were further validated by quantitative RT-PCR. Maximum Blast hits were found to be against Vitis vinifera. From this study, we have identified additional number of cytochrome family in high oil yielding sandalwood accessions (SaHc). The accessibility of a RNA-Seq for high oil yielding sandalwood accessions will have broader associations for the conservation and selection of superior elite samples/populations for further genetic improvement program.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension is a progressive cardiovascular condition arising from complex aetiologies. Progression is strongly associated with functional and structural abnormalities that lead to multi-organ dysfunction. Stroke and myocardial infarction are two of the major complications of hypertension in India. Various anti-hypertensive drugs, such as calcium channel blockers (CCBs), beta-blockers, diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers, have been the medications of choice for disease management and are known to be effective in reducing the complications of hypertension. CCBs, such as amlodipine, are also currently being used and proven to be effective, although their beneficial effects in the management of complications of hypertension like stroke and myocardial infarction (MI) have yet to be proven. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the effect of amlodipine on stroke and MI in hypertensive patients. METHODS: A systematic search of English electronic databases was performed for studies with sufficient statistical power that were published between 2000 andl 30 August 2020, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria. A total of 676 papers were screened, and 13 were found eligible to be included in the meta-analysis. Studies that included patients who suffered from MI or stroke and were under amlodipine treatment were included in the analysis. The odds ratio and the risk ratio of amlodipine compared to active control/placebo were noted from the studies and statistically analyzed. RESULTS: Amlodipine had a significant effect in reducing stroke and MI in hypertensive patients. Similar to results published in reports, this systematic review proved that the hazard ratio for amlodipine was < 1 for stroke (0.69-1.04) and MI (0.77-0.98), showing that amlodipine accounted for better prevention of stroke and MI. CONCLUSION: In the pooled analysis of data from 12 randomised controlled trials and one double-blinded cohort study measuring the effect of CCBs, we found that the CCB amlodipine reduced the risk of stroke and MI in hypertensive patients. Superior results for amlodipine were found in ten of the 13 studies included in this meta-analysis.

Fruit flies are the most serious economic insect pests of mango in India and other parts of the world. Under future climate change, shifts in temperature will be a key driver of ecosystem function especially in terms of insect pest dynamics. In this study, we predicted the voltinism of the three economically important fruit fly species viz., Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), Bactrocera correcta (Bezzi) and Bactrocera zonata (Saunders) of mango from 10 geographical locations in India using well established degree day approaches. Daily minimum and maximum temperature data were generated by using seven General Circulation Models (GCMs) along with their ensemble, in conjunction with the four representative concentration pathways (RCPs) scenarios (RCP 2.6, RCP 4.5, RCP 6.0 and RCP 8.5) and three time periods (2020, 2050 and 2080) generated from MarkSim® DSSAT weather file generator. Historical data from 1969-2005 of these 10 locations were considered as baseline period. Under future predicted climates, model outputs indicates that all three fruit fly species will produce higher number of generations (1-2 additional generations) with 15-24% reduced generation time over the baseline period. The increased voltinism of fruit fly species due to increased temperature may lead to ≃5% higher infestation of mango fruits in India by the year 2050. Analysis of variance revealed that 'geographical locations' explained 77% of the total variation in voltinism followed by 'time periods' (11%). Such increase in the voltinism of fruit flies and the consequent increases in the infestation of mango fruits are likely to have significant negative impacts on mango protection and production.

Sandalwood (Santalum album L; family Santalaceae) is a highly significant aromatic oil yielding tree. It is valued for two important traits, heartwood and essential oil obtained from the heartwood. This study was proposed to assess the morphological and genetic variability of sandalwood accessions. For this, genotypes were randomly selected (n = 177) from the 14 populations from three states in southern India. The total heartwood oil content and quality was estimated by UV method and GC-MS. Total 14 oil-specific genic SSR markers were procured to evaluate the genetic diversity among the sandalwood accessions. Total core size, heartwood content, and oil of S. album ranged from 4.4 to 19.1 cm; 0.0 to 17.3 cm; and 0.0 to 5.96% with covariance 27.61, 85.25, and 73.12% followed by mean 9.74, 3.77, and 2.71, respectively. Genetic diversity estimates were highly polymorphic in terms of Na 7.28, Ne 5.89, He 8.0 PIC 0.891, with little Ho, and F-0.922. AMOVA revealed that minimal genetic variation among populations and highest variation was found among individuals with Nm (58.4). The UPGMA reveals the cluster favored the grouping pattern by the PCA analysis. Structure and PCA analysis clustered the entire populations into two major groups with F ST 0.046 in which population of Kerala and Karnataka were pure and Telangana accessions were found admixtures. No significant correlation (r 2 = 0.23, P = 0.00) was observed between heartwood oil and genetic structures. A high degree of transferability of genic markers would facilitate the assessment of novel genotypes for future tree improvement and conservation of Sandalwood populations.

The growth, development and consumption of four successive generations of semilooper, Achaea janato reared on castor (Ricinus communis L.) foliage grown under elevated carbon dioxide (550 and 700 parts per million ) concentrations in open top chambers were estimated at Hyderabad, India. Significantly lower leaf nitrogen, higher carbon, higher relative proportion of carbon to nitrogen (C: N) and higher polyphenols expressed in terms of tannic acid equivalents were observed in castor foliage under elevated CO2 levels. Significant influence on life history parameters of A. jonata viz., longer larval duration, increased larval survival rates and differential pupal weights in successive four generations were observed under elevated over ambient CO2 levels. The consumption per larva under elevated CO2 increased from first to fourth generation. An increase in approximate digestibility and relative consumption rate, decreased efficiency of conversion of ingested food and digested food and relative growth rate of the four generations under elevated CO2 levels was noticed. Potential population increase index was lower for successive generations under both elevated CO, over ambient. The present findings indicated that elevated CO2 levels significantly alter the quality of castor foliage resulting in higher consumption and better assimilation by larvae, slower growth and longer time to pupation besides producing less fecund adults over generations.

Intercropping is one of the important cultural practices in pest management and is based on the principle of reducing insect pests by increasing the diversity of an ecosystem. On-farm experiments were conducted in villages of semi-arid tropical (SAT) India to identify the appropriate combination of castor (Ricinus communis L.) (Malpighiales: Euphorbiaceae) and intercropping in relation to pest incidence. The diversity created by introducing cluster bean, cowpea, black gram, or groundnut as intercrops in castor (1:2 ratio proportions) resulted in reduction of incidence of insect pests, namely semilooper (Achaea janata L.), leaf hopper (Empoasca flavescens Fabricius), and shoot and capsule borer (Conogethes punctiferalis Guenee). A buildup of natural enemies (Microplitis, coccinellids, and spiders) of the major pests of castor was also observed in these intercropping systems and resulted in the reduction of insect pests. Further, these systems were more efficient agronomically and economically, and were thus more profitable than a castor monocrop.

AIM: This investigation aimed to assess the hepatoprotective effect of saponin fraction isolated from the fruit pericarp of Sapindus mukorossi on carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced hepatotoxicity. METHODS: Fruit of S. mukorossi was collected and authenticated, and dried pericarp powder subjected to extraction with cold ethanol (70%) by maceration followed by isolation of total saponin fraction. Hepatoprotective activity was demonstrated in the CCl(4)-damaged primary monolayer culture. In in vivo studies, pretreatment with total saponin fraction (50,100 and 150 mg/kg per os once a day for 4 days before CCl(4) introduction and continued afterward for 3 days) attenuated the CCl(4)-induced acute increase in serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase, serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, and alkaline phosphatase activities and considerably reduced histopathological alterations. Further, saponin fraction reduced thiopentone-induced (4 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) sleeping time in rats. RESULTS: Saponin fraction pretreatment improves bromsulphalein clearance and also increases cellular viability. Saponin administration replenished depleted hepatic glutathione and superoxide dismutase by improving the antioxidant status of the liver and liver function enzymes. These effects substantiate protection of cellular phospholipids from peroxidative damage induced by highly reactive toxic intermediate radicals formed during biotransformation of CCl(4). CONCLUSION: The above findings lead to the conclusion that the saponin fraction of S. mukorossi has a protective capability both in vitro on primary hepatocyte cultures and in vivo in a rat model of CCl(4)-mediated liver injury. Hence, we suggest that the inclusion of this S. mukorossi fruit pericarp in the management of liver disorders is justified.

Three-component coupling of aldehyde, indole and kojic acid has been achieved using a catalytic amount of InCl(3) under solvent free conditions to produce a novel series of 2-substituted aryl(indolyl)kojic acid derivatives in good yields and with high selectivity. These compounds are found to exhibit potent antifungal properties.

A series of 1-aryl-4-methyl-3,6-bis-(5-methylisoxazol-3-yl)-2-thioxo-2,3,6,10b-tetrahydro-1H-pyrimido[5,4-c]quinolin-5-ones (6a-h) have been synthesized by cyclization of ethyl-3-aryl-4-(2-chlorophenyl)-6-methyl-1-(5-methylisoxazol-3-yl)-2-thioxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidine-5-carboxylates 4a-h with 3-amino-5-methylisoxazole 5. Compounds 4a-h were obtained by Biginelli reaction, by condensation of aromatic aldehyde 1, ethyl acetoacetate 2, and isoxazolyl thioureas 3 in a one-pot reaction catalyzed by ceric ammonium nitrite (CAN). Compounds 6a-h were tested for their antibacterial and antifungal activities against various bacterial and fungal strains. The results showed that these compounds exhibited good antibacterial and antifungal activity compared with that of standard antibiotics. Mosquito larvicidal activity of the newly synthesized compounds 6a-h is also studied against fourth instar larvae Culex quinquefasciatus. Some of the compounds are proved to be lethal for mosquito larvae.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Climatic attributes have been associated with relative mosquito abundance and transmission of mosquito borne infections in many parts of the world, especially in warm and tropical climatic regions. The main objectives of this study were to assess the change in seasonal pattern of Japanese encephalitis (JE) vectors, their density, to elucidate whether the lagged climate variables (precipitation, temperature and humidity) are associated with JE vector density, and to determine if temperature and precipitation are similarly important for the rise in the number of potential mosquito vectors for JE virus in the temperate climate of Andhra Pradesh, India. METHODS: Mosquito samples were collected from Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh using hand catch and light-trap methods during 2002 to 2006. The type and abundance of recovered species were compared to ecological correlates. In each geographic area, temperature and precipitation are the two possible proxy variables for mosquito density, in conjunction with other seasonal factors for JE epidemics. RESULTS: Out of the various mosquito species collected, Culex gelidus and Cx. tritaeniorhynchus were noticed in high numbers. There was considerably high prevalence of Cx. gelidus (68.05%) in urban area than in rural areas whereas, Cx. tritaeniorhynchus (57.51%) was found to be more in rural areas than in the urban area. It is noticed that the factors such as rainfall and temperature were found to be correlated with the per man hour (PMH) density, whereas the humidity was inversely correlated with the PMH. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION: The environmental and eco-climatic factors are assisting in enhancing the breeding of these mosquitoes in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, India. Both Cx. tritaeniorhyncus and Cx. gelidus are quite adaptable to these environmental conditions and this necessitates immediate control measures in both rural and urban areas of Kurnool district.

RESUMO

A prenylated chalcone 2 named crotaorixin, has been isolated from the aerial parts of the Crotalaria orixensis. Its structure has been established by extensive 1D and 2D NMR measurements. In vitro antimalarial activity of crotaorixin as well as few prenylated chalcones isolated from C. medicagenia and C. ramosissima were evaluated at three concentrations (50, 10 and 2 microg/ml) against Plasmodium falciparum (Strain NF-54). Compound 3 has exhibited 100% inhibition of schizont maturation at 2 microg/ml concentration.
