RESUMO

The objective of this research was to determine whether diet composition, or adding probiotic or symbiotic feed additives to broiler diets can modify the N composition of the excreta and the dynamics of ammonia volatilization from the manure. A total of 574 one-day-old Ross 308 broiler chickens were fed four different diets. The treatments included a corn and soybean meal-based control diets (C), wheat-based and wheat bran containing diets (W), a multi-strain probiotic treatment (Broilact®; Br), and a symbiotic additive containing Bacillus subtilis, inulin, and Saccharomices cerevisiae (Sy). Feeding the wheat-based diet significantly improved the weight gain and FCR of chickens. Treatment W also significantly increased the dry matter content of the excreta compared with the probiotic and symbiotic treatments. Both Br and Sy tended to decrease the amount of excreted uric acid, which is the main substrate of ammonia. Treatment Sy reduced the urinary N ratio of the excreta in comparison with treatment W. The symbiotic additive resulted in significantly higher ammonia emission in the first two hours. On the other hand, the dynamics of the emission was slow at the beginning and increased steeply after 15 h when the wheat-based diets were fed. Based on our results, the wheat-based diets, containing soluble arabinoxylans, and the symbiotic treatments of broiler diets have an impact on the urinary and faecal nitrogen composition of the excreta, and also on the dynamics of ammonia release from the manure.

RESUMO

The study reported here aimed to determine whether correlations can be found between the intestinal segment-related microbiota composition and the different growing intensities of broiler chickens. The bacterial community structures of three intestinal segments (jejunum chymus-JC, jejunum mucosa-JM, caecum chymus-CC) from broiler chickens with low body weight (LBW) and high body weight (HBW) were investigated. Similar to the previous results in most cases, significant differences were found in the bacteriota diversity and composition between the different sampling places. However, fewer body weight (BW)-related differences were detected. In the JM of the HBW birds, the Bacteroidetes/Firmicutes ratio (B/F) was also higher. At the genus level significant differences were observed between the BW groups in the relative abundance of Enterococcus, mainly in the JC; Bacteroides and Ruminococcaceae UCG-010, mainly in the JM; and Ruminococcaceae UCG-013, Negativibacillus, and Alistipes in the CC. These genera and others (e.g., Parabacteroides and Fournierella in the JM; Butyricoccus, Ruminiclostridium-9, and Bilophila in the CC) showed a close correlation with BW. The co-occurrence interaction results in the JC revealed a correlation between the genera of Actinobacteria (mainly with Corynebacterium) and Firmicutes Bacilli classes with different patterns in the two BW groups. In the JM of LBW birds, two co-occurring communities were found that were not identifiable in HBW chickens and their members belonged to the families of Ruminococcaceae and Lachnospiraceae. In the frame of the co-occurrence evaluation between the jejunal content and mucosa, the two genera (Trichococcus and Oligella) in the JC were found to have a significant positive correlation with other genera of the JM only in LBW chickens.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Adipose mesenchymal stem cells (AMSCs) are a type of stem cell employed to repair damaged organs. This study aimed to see how effective AMSCs are at treating gentamycin- induced hepatorenal damage in rats. METHODS: 18 male Wister rats were assigned into three groups; control, Gentamycin (GM), and GM+AMSCs. GM induced hepatorenal toxicity through daily injection (100 mg/kg, i.p.) for eight days. On day 9, AMSC (106 cells/ml/rat) was injected intravenously. RESULTS: Creatinine, urea, uric acid, AST, ALP, ALT, TNF-, and MDA levels decreased, whereas IL-10, GSH, and CAT levels increased, indicating the therapeutic potency of intravenous injection AMSCs. CONCLUSION: The current study demonstrated the simultaneous therapeutic efficacy of adipose mesenchymal stem cells on the liver and kidney in the treatment of Gentamycin-induced hepatotoxicity. These data show that AMSCs could be a feasible therapy option for liver and kidney disease.

RESUMO

In order to maintain a good environmental status of surface waters, an assessment of water quality carried out at specific intervals to monitor the changes of water quality in function of time. Human knowledge and experience are currently focused on using assessment methods, especially the integration of multiple constraining factors and considering them in conjugation with the correct decision-making process concerning the environment. When surface water is highly exposed to human activities, either from recreational or economic activity, the degree of vulnerability is high, and the quality of surface water is highly compromised. In case of Lake Balaton, there are many activities that can disrupt water dynamics. The first goal of this study is to determine the location of the least and most polluted sites around Lake Balaton. The processing of data was carried out by using multi-criteria decision techniques and environmental impact assessment method based on physical-chemical parameters in comparison with the limiting parameters. Based on the results of those methods water quality needs to be improved in western parts of the lake by using several geoengineering treatment techniques. This work covers a novel approach to comparing methods based on sum of ranking differences, whereas many method comparison studies suffer from ambiguity or from comparisons not being quite fair. This problem can be avoided if there are differences between ideal and actual rankings.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) combined with selected physical therapy exercise program on male patients with pudendal neuralgia. DESIGN: A double-blinded randomized controlled study. SETTING: Out-patient setting. PARTICIPANTS: Fifty-two male participants with pudendal neuralgia (30-50 years) were allocated randomly into two groups; study and control. The same physical therapy exercises were applied to all participants, plus the same prescribed analgesic medication (Etodolac). Participants in the study group received additional TENS and sham TENS were given to those in control group. INTERVENTION: Intervention lasted for 12 weeks, three sessions per week (60 minutes/session). OUTCOME MEASURES: Numerical pain rating scale and daily Etodolac intake dose were measured before and after intervention. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences were detected in numerical pain rating scale and daily Etodolac intake in favor of the study group (P < 0.05). After 12 weeks of intervention, the mean ± SD for numerical pain rating scale and daily Etodolac intake were 4.25 ± 1.9 and 259.25 ± 84.4 mg, in the study group, and 6.22 ± 2.22 and 355.55 ± 93.36 mg in the control group, respectively. The mean difference (95% CI) for numerical pain rating scale and daily Etodolac intake was -1.97 (-3.09: -0.83) and -96.3 (-144.9: -47.69), between groups post treatment, respectively. CONCLUSION: Adding TENS to physical therapy exercise program is more effective than physical therapy program alone in improving pain in male patients with pudendal neuralgia as measured by numerical pain rating scale and daily analgesic intake dose.

RESUMO

Lake Nasser is one of the largest man-made lakes on earth. It has a vital importance to Egypt for several decades because of the safe water supply of the country. Therefore, the water quality of the Lake Nasser must be profoundly investigated, and physico-chemical parameter changes of the water of the Lake Nasser should be continuously monitored and assessed. This work describes the present state of the physico-chemical (nitrate-nitrogen, nitrite-nitrogen, orthophosphate, total phosphate content, dissolved oxygen content, chemical oxygen demand, and biological oxygen demand) water parameters of Lake Nasser in Egypt at nine measurement sites along the Lake Nasser. The algorithm was devised at the University of Pannonia, Hungary, for the evaluation of the water quality. The aquatic environmental indices determined alongside the Lake Nasser fall into the category of "good" water quality at seven sampling sites and exhibited "excellent" water quality at two sampling sites according to Egyptian Governmental Decree No. 92/2013. In light of the tremendous demand for safe and healthy water supply in Egypt and international requirements, the water quality assessment is a very important tool for providing reliable information on the water quality. The protocol for water quality assessment could significantly contribute to the provision of high-quality water supply in Egypt. In conclusion, it can be stated that the parameters under investigation in different regions of Lake Nasser fall within the permissible ranges and the water of the Lake has good quality for drinking, irrigation, and fish cultures according to Egyptian standards; however, according to European specifications, there are steps to be accomplished for future water quality improvement.

RESUMO

Herbal remedies have been used for centuries to ameliorate complications of diabetes mellitus (DM). The aim of this study is to compare the effects of the oral curcumin supplement versus parenteral administration of turmeric extract on diabetic complications in a streptozocin (STZ) diabetic model. STZ DM rats received low and high doses turmeric extract intraperitoneally as well as oral curcumin. Curcumin and turmeric extracts significantly reduced blood glucose and creatinine levels, but not urea, and caused an increase in uric acid. Low dose improved liver enzymes, while higher dose and oral administration caused an increase in the ALT and AST. All groups showed an improvement in the serum cholesterol, while the triglycerides were not improved in the high and oral treatment. Histological evaluation showed islet cell protection. High-dose injection showed almost intact renal corpuscles as well as tubular structures with minimal degeneration. Treatment showed limited protection of Liver tissue. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Curcumin has been heavily marketed as a protective agent. The current study shows some potential risk of curcumin use. Oral and injectable curcumin should be used with caution. Turmeric extract and oral curcumin supplement showed protective effects on pancreatic, and renal structure and function. Although both did show some improvement in liver function, higher doses caused disturbance in liver enzymes and did not show histological evidence of liver tissue protection.
