Taurodontism is a morphological anomaly of multirooted molars characterized by apical displacement of the pulp chamber, shortened roots, and the absence of constriction at the dentoenamel junction. It can negatively impact the outcome of dental treatment plans. This study aimed to compare the prevalence of taurodontism among contemporary and historical populations from Radom, Poland. Five hundred eighty-two panoramic radiographs of contemporary patients and 600 radiographs of historical individuals were analyzed using the Shifman and Chanannel index. Group differences were determined with Pearson's chi-square tests according to sex, site, tooth group, and historical period. The study also evaluated the degree of severity of taurodontism in relation to dental groups, gender, and the periods from which contemporary patients as well as historical individuals originated. In the contemporary population, taurodontism was observed in 34% of individuals. In the historical data, the highest prevalence of taurodontism (31%) was observed among individuals from the 18th and 19th centuries, while earlier periods exhibited considerably lower prevalence rates. Across contemporary and historical populations, the maxillary molars were the most commonly affected teeth. Hypotaurodontism was the most prevalent form of taurodontism. The prevalence of taurodontism has gradually increased from the 11th century to the current day. The results of the research are of great importance for the clinician in terms of planning comprehensive dental treatment.

Pain related to temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is a common problem that can significantly influence a patient's quality of life. Laser photobiomodulation (PBM) has been reported as a promising method in medicine for wound and bone healing, pain relief, and treatment of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Our clinical case aimed to demonstrate the effectivity of PBM using 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser for the treatment of pain and restricted mandible movement in a patient with anterior disk displacement of the left TMJ, using subjective (pain on visual analogue scale - VAS) and objective outcome measures [dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)]. PBM was performed on the left condyle in four sessions using a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser with a flat-top handpiece. Results after 10 weeks showed an increase in mouth opening and a painless joint on palpation, with no reported adverse effects. An MRI of the TMJ confirmed the left disk displacement, however, with no signs of inflammation or effusion and with less pronounced disk deformity as compared with the first MRI examination. Use of PBM with Nd:YAG laser may be an efficient method for the management of orofacial pain in patients with acute and chronic TMJ disk displacements and may reduce the recovery time.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the work was to trace possible changes in the frequency of taurodontism in individuals who inhabited historical Radom from the early Middle Ages to modern periods. DESIGN: The research was based on the analysis of X-ray images of 640 molars of individuals from the 11th/12th c. (n = 120), 14th/17th c. (n = 76), and 18th/19th c. (n = 444). Radiological images were made with the use of a portable X-ray machine, and the results were biometrically analysed using the Shiffman and Chanannel index. RESULTS: The highest frequency of taurodontism was observed in the 18th/19th c. (31 %, 138/444). In the 11th/12th and 14th/17th centuries, this percentage was significantly lower (22 %, 26/120 vs. 16 %, 12/76). In subsequent chronological periods, no statistically significant differences between sexes in the occurrence of taurodontism were observed. The highest number of taurodontal teeth was observed among the second and first upper molars (73 % and 52 %, respectively), and the lowest number was observed among the first and second lower molars (16 % and 23 %, respectively). In all historical periods, hypotaurodont forms were most often observed. CONCLUSIONS: Variations in the frequency of taurodontism may result from many reasons, for example environmental factors. However, it cannot be ruled out that the observed differences result from the increased migration of people to Radom in the 18th/19th century.

Taurodontism is a morphological anomaly involving multirooted teeth that is characterized by a vertical shift of the pulp chamber and shortening of the roots. The literature was analyzed to determine the impact of a diagnosis of taurodontism on dental treatment. A total of 85 full-text publications from the years 2005-2021 were analyzed and 20 publications were included in this research. The endodontic treatment of a taurodont tooth is challenging due to the apical displacement of the pulpal chamber floor and the incorrect configuration of the root canal system, or the presence of additional canals. In terms of prosthetics, the use of taurodont teeth as abutments is not recommended as they lack stability due to shorter roots. The extraction of taurodont teeth can be complicated due to an apical shift of the root furcation. In periodontology, taurodont teeth can have a better prognosis as there is less chance of furcation involvement. From an orthodontic point of view, it is important to note that taurodont teeth are not sufficiently embedded in the alveolus and have a greater tendency for root resorption. With regard to genetic diseases, it has been reported that this anomaly can exist as an isolated feature. However, the majority of authors agree that taurodontism is associated with conditions such as Down syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, cleft lip and palate, hypodontia, amelogenesis imperfecta, and others. From a clinical standpoint, it is very important to diagnose taurodontism before treatment. A diagnosis of taurodontism can be important in the early diagnosis of malformations that commonly occur with this condition.

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of dimensional distortion and its changes with modification of exposure setting parameters on the measurements of peri-implant bone margin. Ten titanium dental implants (InKone Primo, Global D, Paris, France) were placed in two prepared bovine ribs. Two bone models and an implant-with-transfer model were scanned with 3shape E4 (3shape, Copenhagen, Denmark) laboratory scanner. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of two bone models were taken with different values of voltage (60, 70, 80, 90 kV), tube current (4, 10 mA) and voxel size (200, 300 µm). All the data were superimposed using planning software, and the measurements of buccal bone thickness in two selected regions were performed both using CBCT and scan cross-sections. The mean squared error (MSE) being the squared differences between measurements was used in the accuracy assessment of the CBCT device. A one-way ANOVA revealed significant differences between voltage and MSE (p = 0.044), as well as implant position and MSE (p = 0.005). The distortions of measurements depend on bone margin thickness, and the higher the distance to measure, the higher the error. Accurate measurements of buccal bone thickness (MSE below 0.25) were achieved with voltage values of 70, 80, and 90 kV.

BACKGROUND: To meet the remote-learning constraints imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Digital Science Platform was developed. Human anatomy courses require practical classes that involve working on prepared specimens, although access to such specimens has been restricted. Therefore, the aim was to prepare appropriate-quality, scanned 3D model databases of human bone specimens and an interactive web application for universal access to educational materials. MAIN BODY: The database is located on the pcn.cnt.edu.pl website and contains 412 three-dimensional osteological models created via a structured light scanner, tomography and microtomography. The webservice contains a search engine and enables interactive visualization of the models. The database can be accessed, without restrictions, by any student or researcher wishing to use the models for noncommercial purposes. The stored models can be visualized with the open-source VisNow platform, which is also available to download from the webservice. The MariaDB backend database was deployed, and an Apache server with a personal home page (PHP) frontend was used. CONCLUSION: The models in the database are unique due to the specific digitalization process and skeleton specimen origin. Further development of the Digital Science Platform is foreseen in the near future to digitize other valuable materials.

This study presents an accurate biexponential weighted stochastic conjugate direction (WSCD) method for the quantitative T2-mapping reconstruction of magnetic resonance images (MRIs), and this approach was compared with the non-negative-least-squares Gauss-Newton (GN) numerical optimization method in terms of accuracy and goodness of fit of the reconstructed images from simulated data and ruptured Achilles tendon (AT) MRIs. Reconstructions with WSCD and GN were obtained from data simulating the signal intensity from biexponential decay and from 58 MR studies of postrupture, surgically repaired ATs. Both methods were assessed in terms of accuracy (closeness of the means of calculated and true simulated T2 values) and goodness of fit (magnitude of mean squared error (MSE)). The lack of significant deviation in correct T2 values for the WSCD method was demonstrated for SNR ≥ 20 and for GN-SNR ≥ 380. The MSEs for WSCD and GN were 287.52 ± 224.11 and 2553.91 ± 1932.31, respectively. The WSCD reconstruction method was better than the GN method in terms of accuracy and goodness of fit.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) amounts to an excellent diagnostic tool to evaluate the peri-implant bone thickness in all dimensions. Despite the unquestionable advantages of CBCT, potential artifacts around dental implants might disturb the proper assessment of the surrounding structures. The artifacts may mask osseointegration, shallow bone defects, and other types of radiolucency, which make it difficult to establish an early diagnosis of bone loss. Proper diagnosis of bone defect is necessary to decide about surgical intervention. The aim of this literature review is to assess the CBCT exposure causing artifacts on the peri-implant structures. An electronic search of MEDLINE (PubMed) database includes studies published before July 2021 and supplemented by manual research. Clinical, ex vivo, in vitro, and animal studies evaluating the relationship between exposition parameters and occurrence of artifacts around the dental implant in CBCT studies were included. A literature review revealed that kilovoltage, tube current, and field of view may affect the occurrence of artifacts around dental implants, all of which would compromise radiological evaluation. Therefore, it is feasible to reduce the incidence of artifacts and improve the image quality by appropriate modification of the exposure parameters. However, the reduction of artifacts is often associated with a significant increase in radiation exposure; hence, an effort should be made to minimize the radiation dose in line with the ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principle.

In this study, we aimed to assess the potential impact of temporomandibular disk displacement on anatomical structures of the stomatognathic system using biexponential T2 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) maps. Fifty separate MRI scans of the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) of 25 patients were acquired with eight echo times. Biexponential T2 maps were created by weighted reconstruction based on Powell's conjugate direction method and divided into two groups: the TMJ without (32 images) and with (18 images) disk displacement. The disk, retrodiscal tissue, condylar bone marrow, masseter muscle, lateral and medial pterygoid muscles and dental pulp of the first and second molars were manually segmented twice. The intrarater reliability was assessed. The averages and standard deviations of the T2 times and fractions of each segmented region for each group were calculated and analysed with multiple Student's t-tests. Significant differences between groups were observed in the retrodiscal tissue, medial pterygoid muscle and bone marrow. The pulp short T2 component showed a trend toward statistical significance. The segmentation reliability was excellent (93.6%). The relationship between disk displacement and quantitative MRI features of stomatognathic structures can be useful in the combined treatment of articular disk displacement, pterygoid muscle tension and occlusive reconstruction.

The aim of this study was to assess the reliability of the artificial intelligence (AI) automatic evaluation of panoramic radiographs (PRs). Thirty PRs, covering at least six teeth with the possibility of assessing the marginal and apical periodontium, were uploaded to the Diagnocat (LLC Diagnocat, Moscow, Russia) account, and the radiologic report of each was generated as the basis of automatic evaluation. The same PRs were manually evaluated by three independent evaluators with 12, 15, and 28 years of experience in dentistry, respectively. The data were collected in such a way as to allow statistical analysis with SPSS Statistics software (IBM, Armonk, NY, USA). A total of 90 reports were created for 30 PRs. The AI protocol showed very high specificity (above 0.9) in all assessments compared to ground truth except from periodontal bone loss. Statistical analysis showed a high interclass correlation coefficient (ICC > 0.75) for all interevaluator assessments, proving the good credibility of the ground truth and the reproducibility of the reports. Unacceptable reliability was obtained for caries assessment (ICC = 0.681) and periapical lesions assessment (ICC = 0.619). The tested AI system can be helpful as an initial evaluation of screening PRs, giving appropriate credibility reports and suggesting additional diagnostic methods for more accurate evaluation if needed.

OBJECTIVES: New solutions for the dynamic assessment of the moving structures of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), such as the intra-articular disc and the head of the mandible, are required for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Therefore, we propose a simple, graded bite block for dynamic MRI examination of the TMJ. METHODS: The bite block consists of three main functional elements: a groove for the biting edges of the upper incisors, steps with bite surfaces for the biting edges of the lower incisors and a handle for easy placement and control of the device. The block is easily manufactured using commercially available 3D printers. The closed-mouth part of the study was performed without the bite block. The patient was instructed to place the central incisors' biting edges in the upper groove. The lower incisors' biting edges were placed consecutively on the first step, second step, and so on, in increasing order, until maximal opening was reached. RESULTS: Ninety-five MR examinations of TMJs were performed. The graded opening bite block was successfully applied in all but two patients. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the simple and easy-to-use graded bite block may be a useful addition to the armamentarium of a radiologist performing MRI scans of the TMJ.

The COVID-19 epidemic propagation computational models generate datasets that exhibit multi-level and time granulation. The Predictive Modelling of the Spatial Propagation of the COVID-19 Pandemic Project (ProME) has produced multi-scenario, multi-agent models for decision making support assessing the impact on the healthcare and the general population. In this paper we present the interactive software developed for models' calibration and visual analysis, addressing the needs of all aspects of data analytics and modeling that arise within ProME system. In order to deal with the Project's tasks we developed the application based on multi-modal, open-source VisNow platform.

This study was intended to evaluate the relationship between secondary alveolar bone grafting (SABG) timing and the alveolar volume in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). The material consisted of CTs of 35 patients (17 males, 18 females) with UCLP who underwent a one-stage primary cleft repair at a mean age of 8.4 months and SABG at different timings ranges of 1.8-18.8 years. The mean age at CT was 17.2 years. The relative coefficient (Ꞷ) which was independent from factors such as individual maxillary size, gender or age at the CT was introduced in order to compare volumes of the cleft-side in relation to the non-cleft-side alveolus. Pearson correlation coefficient r between Ꞷ coefficient and SABG timing was weak negative (r = -0.34, p = 0.045). The multiple regression analysis implied that the dependent variable-Ꞷ coefficient was associated with independent variables (cleft repair and SABG timings and age at CT) with r2 = 0.228. Only patient's age at SABG explained the dependent variable (p = 0.003). The study cautiously indicates a tendency to larger alveolar volume following earlier timing of SABG. Nevertheless, the further research on a larger group of patients should be performed before formulating any clinical indications.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess whether analyzed groups from two historical periods: Late Medieval (LMP), and Modern (MP) from Radom varied in the number of tooth roots and root canal system morphology. METHODS: Root morphology of 229 permanent human teeth were analyzed using Cone Beam Computed Tomography. Additionally, the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of 29 individuals from the LMP and 31 from the MP was analyzed. RESULTS: In LMP, the maxillary first premolars were dominated by one root, while in MP second and third roots also appeared. Maxillary first molars in LMP presented three roots, while two-rooted forms occurred in MP. All mandibular first molars from the LMP and almost all (98%) from MP presented two roots. The greatest diversity in terms of root canal number occurred in one-rooted maxillary first premolars, the mesiobuccal root of the maxillary first molars, and the mesial and distal roots of the mandibular first molars in both groups. A few haplogroups from outside Europe (C, N, and R) were recorded in the MP Radom population. Moreover, this population had substantially higher haplogroup diversity compared with the LMP population. CONCLUSION: Odontological research indicates an increase in the diversity in the number of roots and the shape of root canals in MP. This information corresponds to genetic research, which also indicates an increase in the diversity of haplogroups during the MP.
