RESUMO

In the present work, a simple, reliable and cost-effective approach to functionalize cotton fabrics with Ag-TiO2 nanoparticles strongly bound to the fibres and with visible-light-responsive photo-activity is presented. The hybrid cotton-Ag-TiO2 fabrics were characterized by Raman, AFM, FE-SEM, TGA, XPS GSDR, and LIL to confirm the generation of metallic Ag nanoparticles and crystalline TiO2 and investigate how the concentration of Ag and TiO2 precursors affected the morphology and the luminescence properties of the nanostructured layer grafted on the cotton fibres. The photocatalytic activity of the cotton-Ag-TiO2 hybrid systems was evaluated by the discoloration of Remazol Brilliant Blue R in water under a xenon lamp irradiation (sunlight simulator) equipped with selective filters. The extended photocatalytic activity to the visible is here explained by a synergistic effect of both the excitation of the Ag NPs plasmon resonance by visible light and a delayed electron-hole recombination rate caused by Ag NPs, as it can be observed by UV absorption.

RESUMO

Stable film-forming nanocomposite particles with diameters ranging from 120 to 300 nm, based on polybutylmethacrylate (PBMA) and cellulose whiskers in water dispersions, were successfully synthesized in one step through mini-emulsion polymerization. The nanocomposite dispersion with a solid content of 25 wt.% and up to 5 wt.% of nanofiller loading was prepared by in situ polymerization, in the presence of the whiskers using dodecylpyridinium chloride (DPC), as a cationic surfactant, and 2,2-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN), as initiator. The electrostatic interaction between the positively charged droplets and negatively charged whiskers ensured the anchoring of the nanofiller around the polymer particles. The ensuing dispersions were characterized by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), ζ-Potential Measurements, and Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM). After the film formation process, the nanocomposite film exhibits a high transparency, denoting the good dispersion of the whiskers throughout the matrix.

RESUMO

Ultrathin films of cellulose were functionalized with iron protoporphyrin IX (FePP). Spin-coating allows the production of silylated cellulose films in a controlled way. Cellulose regeneration is achieved through the hydrolyzation of the silane groups, exposing the film to acidic vapors. To enhance the reactivity of the cellulose surface to the protoporphyrin, carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) was used as an activator. The effect of different spacers on the porphyrin grafting such as 1,8-diaminooctane and 1,4-phenylenediamine was studied. The highest level of cellulose functionalization with FePP was achieved when both the cellulose film and FePP were activated by CDI and a diaminoalkane was used as a spacer between the surface and the FePP. ATR/MIR (attenuated total reflection in multiple internal reflections) was performed in situ to follow the kinetics of the different chemical reactions with the cellulose surface. ATR/MIR proved again to be a powerful tool for probing the surface reaction. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy permitted the elemental analysis of the cellulose surface after the chemical modification.
