RESUMO

The Japanese eel population has dramatically declined since the 1970s. In order to conserve this species, the background genetic structure affecting these populations should be well documented. Previous genetic studies of this species have produced seemingly conflicting results, ranging from no detectable heterogeneity to small, but statistically significant variance. This study investigates the population structure of Japanese glass eels collected from 10 localities in China in 2009 using a mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region and 19 polymorphic microsatellite loci. Results revealed evidence of low genetic differentiation using both mtDNA (FST = 0.001, P = 0.291) and microsatellite data (FST = 0.003, P = 0.008). Pairwise F-statistic values generated from mtDNA and microsatellite DNA were similar, showing little evidence of significant genetic differentiation. The minimum spanning haplotype network constructed using mtDNA control regions produced no clear phylogeographic structure. The Mantel test revealed no significant correlation with distances for both mtDNA and microsatellite DNA. Therefore, our results suggest a panmictic population of Japanese eels in China, which should be conserved as a single management unit.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a reversible cholestatic liver disease of undefined etiology and pathogenesis. It is likely associated with dyslipidemia. However, the explanation for the role of dyslipidemia is not clear. We hypothesized that an increased oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) and lectin-like oxidized LDL receptor-1 (LOX-1) may play a crucial role in the development of the disease. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the plasma oxLDL level and LOX-1 expression in placentas from women with ICP. METHODOLOGY: The plasma oxLDL level and LOX-1 expression were detected in 94 intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy patients (ICP group) and 94 healthy pregnant women (control group). The placental LOX-lexpression was detected by Western blotting; the plasma oxLDL was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: The placental LOX-1 expression in the ICP group was higher than that in the control group (p < 0.05), whereas the plasma oxLDL did not differ significantly between the patients with ICP and healthy pregnant women. CONCLUSIONS: LOX-1 may play a crucial role in the pathophysiological processes of ICP caused by over-apoptosis of trophocytes. Moreover, LOX-1 could be a potential target for therapeutic intervention.

RESUMO

The results of an experimental study in rats fed with Equisetum hyemale and hyperlipid food have proved that inhibiting effects on the elevation of triglyceride and cholesterol can be obviously observed in both high and low doses of Equisetum. The study also shows that Equisetum hyemale can antagonize the hyperlipemia in rats. The acute toxic test has proved its low toxicity.
