Background and purpose: Active breathing motion management in radiotherapy consists of motion monitoring, quantification and mitigation. It is impacted by associated latencies of a few 100 ms. Artificial neural networks can successfully predict breathing motion and eliminate latencies. However, they require usually a large dataset for training. The objective of this work was to demonstrate that explicitly encoding the cyclic nature of the breathing signal into the training data enables significant reduction of training datasets which can be obtained from healthy volunteers. Material and methods: Seventy surface scanner breathing signals from 25 healthy volunteers in anterior-posterior direction were used for training and validation (ratio 4:1) of long short-term memory models. The model performance was compared to a model using decomposition into phase, amplitude and a time-dependent baseline. Testing of the models was performed on 55 independent breathing signals in anterior-posterior direction from surface scanner (35 lung, 20 liver) of 30 patients with a mean breathing amplitude of (5.9 ± 6.7) mm. Results: Using the decomposed breathing signal allowed for a reduction of the absolute root-mean square error (RMSE) from 0.34 mm to 0.12 mm during validation. Testing using patient data yielded an average absolute RMSE of the breathing signal of (0.16 ± 0.11) mm with a prediction horizon of 500 ms. Conclusion: It was demonstrated that a motion prediction model can be trained with less than 100 datasets of healthy volunteers if breathing cycle parameters are considered. Applied to 55 patients, the model predicted breathing motion with a high accuracy.

BACKGROUND: Many patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) have moderate-to-severe persistent AR. Meda Pharma's AzeFlu (MP-AzeFlu®) is an intranasal AR treatment comprising a novel formulation of azelastine hydrochloride and fluticasone propionate in a single device. METHODS: This prospective observational study of 214 adults and adolescents in Austria with moderate-to-severe persistent AR assessed the effectiveness of MP-AzeFlu (one spray/nostril twice daily; daily doses: azelastine hydrochloride 548 µg; and fluticasone propionate 200 µg) for AR control in clinical practice using the visual analog scale. Symptom severity was reported on days 0, 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42. Patient demographics, AR phenotype, allergen sensitization, symptomatology, AR treatments in the previous year, and the reason for the MP-AzeFlu prescription were recorded. RESULTS: MP-AzeFlu treatment was associated with a rapid and statistically significant reduction in the visual analog scale score from baseline to each timepoint measured, including day 1 (all p < 0.0001). Mean (standard deviation) visual analog scale score was 53.5 mm (26.3) at baseline, 25.3 mm (21.0) on day 28, and 19.6 mm (17.4) on day 42, a mean overall reduction from baseline of 41.4 (23.9) mm for completers. Results were consistent irrespective of patient age, gender, severity, or traditional AR phenotype. Prior to MP-AzeFlu prescription, congestion was considered the most bothersome symptom. The majority of patients reported using at least two AR therapies in the past year, including oral antihistamines, intranasal corticosteroids, and intranasal antihistamines. CONCLUSIONS: Many patients in Austria live with uncontrolled persistent AR despite treatment. MP-AzeFlu provides effective and rapid control of persistent AR in a real-world Austrian setting.

INTRODUCTION: The Severe Asthma Registry, founded by German Asthma Net (GAN) in 2011, is a prospective registry recording clinical parameters from participating centers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This article presents the baseline characteristics of severe asthma patients from Austrian centers. METHODS: We analyzed the baseline visit data of all patients recruited to the GAN Severe Asthma Registry from participating Austrian centers. RESULTS: Baseline visit data were available for 214 Austrian severe asthma patients from 6 Austrian centers from 2013 to 2022. Mean age was 53.7 years. Mean BMI was 26.4 kg/m2. More than a third (37.4%) of all patients had daily daytime asthma symptoms at baseline and had to use their reliever medication at least once per day. Forty-one percent of patients were classified as uncontrolled according to GINA and 24.8% as partially controlled at baseline visit. The median annual exacerbation frequency was 3 in the previous 12 months. At the time of baseline visit, 23.4% of all patients had regular treatment with oral corticosteroids. Furthermore, 23.9% had received any severe asthma monoclonal antibody prior to the baseline visit. There were no notable differences in baseline characteristics between patients categorized by smoking history or measurable type 2 inflammation. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides the first multi-center characterization of Austrian severe asthma patients. Patients in this cohort had better asthma control and less frequent exacerbations compared to most international registries.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate how the efficiency of the treatment planning processes of a university radiation oncology department (2,500 new patients/year) could be improved by constructing and implementing a workflow-monitoring application. METHODS: A web-based application was developed in house, which enhanced the process management tools of the clinic's oncology information system. The application calculates the days left for the next task in the treatment planning process and visualizes the information on a browser-based whiteboard. Workflow monitoring considers tumor types (breast, prostate, lung, etc) and treatment techniques and is backward planned from the planned start of treatment. The effect of introducing this application was analyzed over four phases: (1) baseline data without the workflow-monitoring application, (2) after introducing workflow visualization via a browser-based whiteboard, (3) after upgrading the whiteboard and introducing backend rules, and (4) after updating these rules on the basis of data from the previous phase. RESULTS: Implementing the workflow-monitoring application and the introduced measures significantly reduced delays and, consequently, stress and a negative working atmosphere in the treatment planning process. Most notably, the amount of last-minute physics checks (on the day of the treatment start) could be reduced by 50%. CONCLUSION: The study showed what measures can help organize and prioritize the treatment planning workflow. The increased efficiency is believed to improve the quality and reduce the risk of human error.

Purpose: To investigate the sensitivity of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) to detect treatment-related side effects in patients with breast cancer undergoing external beam photon radiotherapy. Methods: As part of daily clinical care, an in-house developed PROM tool was used to assess side effects in patients during a) whole-breast irradiation (WBI) to 40 Gy, b) WBI with a sequential boost of 10 Gy, and c) partial-breast irradiation (PBI) to 40 Gy. Results: 414 patients participated in this prospective study between October 2020 and January 2022, with 128 patients (31 %) receiving WBI, 241 (58 %) receiving WBI followed by a sequential boost, and 50 patients (12 %) receiving PBI. Significant differences in the reported toxicities (itching, radiation skin reaction, skin darkening, and tenderness and swelling) were reported between the WBI cohorts with and without boost (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, and p = 0.002, respectively). The comparison of PBI with WBI (no-boost) yielded significant differences for radiation skin reaction (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The results highlight the high sensitivity of PROMs to detect treatment-related side effects in patients with breast cancer. Thus, PROMs may be a valuable tool for quality control and may support evidence-based learning from real-world data originating from daily routine care.

Medical imaging phantoms are widely used for validation and verification of imaging systems and algorithms in surgical guidance and radiation oncology procedures. Especially, for the performance evaluation of new algorithms in the field of medical imaging, manufactured phantoms need to replicate specific properties of the human body, e.g., tissue morphology and radiological properties. Additive manufacturing (AM) technology provides an inexpensive opportunity for accurate anatomical replication with customization capabilities. In this study, we proposed a simple and cheap protocol using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology to manufacture realistic tumor phantoms based on the filament 3D printing technology. Tumor phantoms with both homogenous and heterogeneous radiodensity were fabricated. The radiodensity similarity between the printed tumor models and real tumor data from CT images of lung cancer patients was evaluated. Additionally, it was investigated whether a heterogeneity in the 3D printed tumor phantoms as observed in the tumor patient data had an influence on the validation of image registration algorithms. A radiodensity range between -217 to 226 HUs was achieved for 3D printed phantoms using different filament materials; this range of radiation attenuation is also observed in the human lung tumor tissue. The resulted HU range could serve as a lookup-table for researchers and phantom manufactures to create realistic CT tumor phantoms with the desired range of radiodensities. The 3D printed tumor phantoms also precisely replicated real lung tumor patient data regarding morphology and could also include life-like heterogeneity of the radiodensity inside the tumor models. An influence of the heterogeneity on accuracy and robustness of the image registration algorithms was not found.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is associated with high morbidity and mortality resulting from a direct or indirect injury of the lung. It is characterized by a rapid alveolar injury, lung inflammation with neutrophil accumulation, elevated permeability of the microvascular-barrier leading to an aggregation of protein-rich fluid in the lungs, followed by impaired oxygenation in the arteries and eventual respiratory failure. Very recently, we have shown an involvement of the Gq-coupled P2Y2 purinergic receptor (P2RY2) in allergic airway inflammation (AAI). In the current study, we aimed to elucidate the contribution of the P2RY2 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ARDS mouse model. We found that the expression of P2ry2 in neutrophils, macrophages and lung tissue from animals with LPS-induced ARDS was strongly upregulated at mRNA level. In addition, ATP-neutralization by apyrase in vivo markedly attenuated inflammation and blocking of P2RY2 by non-selective antagonist suramin partially decreased inflammation. This was indicated by a reduction in the number of neutrophils, concentration of proinflammatory cytokines in the BALF, microvascular plasma leakage and reduced features of inflammation in histological analysis of the lung. P2RY2 blocking has also attenuated polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) migration into the interstitium of the lungs in ARDS mouse model. Consistently, treatment of P2ry2 deficient mice with LPS lead to an amelioration of the inflammatory response showed by reduced number of neutrophils and concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines. In attempts to identify the cell type specific role of P2RY2, a series of experiments with conditional P2ry2 knockout animals were performed. We observed that P2ry2 expression in neutrophils, but not in the airway epithelial cells or CD4+ cells, was associated with the inflammatory features caused by ARDS. Altogether, our findings imply for the first time that increased endogenous ATP concentration via activation of P2RY2 is related to the pathogenesis of LPS-induced lung inflammation and may represent a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of ARDS and predictably assess new treatments in ARDS.

We report the first long-term follow-up of a randomized trial (NCT04978259) addressing the effects of remdesivir on recovery (primary outcome) and other patient-important outcomes one year after hospitalization resulting from COVID-19. Of the 208 patients recruited from 11 Finnish hospitals, 198 survived, of whom 181 (92%) completed follow-up. At one year, self-reported recovery occurred in 85% in remdesivir and 86% in standard of care (SoC) (RR 0.94, 95% CI 0.47-1.90). We infer no convincing difference between remdesivir and SoC in quality of life or symptom outcomes (p > 0.05). Of the 21 potential long-COVID symptoms, patients reported moderate/major bother from fatigue (26%), joint pain (22%), and problems with memory (19%) and attention/concentration (18%). In conclusion, after a one-year follow-up of hospitalized patients, one in six reported they had not recovered well from COVID-19. Our results provide no convincing evidence of remdesivir benefit, but wide confidence intervals included possible benefit and harm.

BACKGROUND: Real-time tumor motion monitoring (TMM) is a crucial process for intra-fractional respiration management in lung cancer radiotherapy. Since the tumor can be partly or fully located behind the ribs, the TMM is challenging. PURPOSE: The aim of this work was to develop a bone suppression (BS) algorithm designed for real-time 2D/3D marker-less TMM to increase the visibility of the tumor when overlapping with bony structures and consequently to improve the accuracy of TMM. METHOD: A BS method was implemented in the in-house developed software for ultrafast intensity-based 2D/3D tumor registration (Fast Image-based Registration [FIRE]). The method operates on both, digitally reconstructed radiograph (DRR) and intra-fractional X-ray images. The bony structures are derived from computed tomography data by thresholding during ray-casting, and the resulting bone DRR is subtracted from intra-fractional X-ray images to obtain a soft-tissue-only image for subsequent tumor registration. The accuracy of TMM utilizing BS was evaluated within a retrospective phantom study with nine different 3D-printed tumor phantoms placed in the in-house developed Advanced Radiation DOSimetry (ARDOS) breathing phantom. A 24 mm craniocaudal tumor motion, including rib eclipses, was simulated, and X-ray images were acquired on the Elekta Versa HD Linac in the lateral and posterior-anterior directions. An error assessment for BS images was evaluated with respect to the ground truth tumor position. RESULTS: A total error (root mean square error) of 0.87 ± 0.23 mm and 1.03 ± 0.26 mm was found for posterior-anterior and lateral imaging; the mean time for BS was 8.03 ± 1.54 ms. Without utilizing BS, TMM failed in all X-ray images since the registration algorithm focused on the rib position due to the predominant intensity of this tissue within DRR and X-ray images. CONCLUSION: The BS algorithm developed and implemented improved the accuracy, robustness, and stability of real-time TMM in lung cancer in a phantom study, even in the case of rib interlude where normal tumor registration fails.

BACKGROUND: MR-based methods for attenuation correction (AC) in PET/MRI either neglect attenuation of bone, or use MR-signal derived information about bone, which leads to a bias in quantification of tracer uptake in PET. In a previous study, we presented a PET/MRI specific MR coil with an integrated transmission source (TX) system allowing for direct measurement of attenuation. In phantom measurements, this system successfully reproduced the linear attenuation coefficient of water. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to validate the TX system in a clinical setting using animals and to show its applicability compared to standard clinical methods. METHODS: As test subject, a 15-kg piglet was injected with 53 MBq of 18F-NaF. The µ-map obtained with the TX system and the reconstructed activity distribution were compared to four established AC methods: a Dixon sequence, an ultra-short echo time (UTE) sequence, a CT scan, and a 511 keV transmission scan using a Siemens ECAT EXACT HR+ as the reference. The PET/MRI measurements were performed on a Siemens Biograph mMR to obtain the µ-map using the TX system as well as the Dixon and UTE sequence directly followed by the CT and ECAT measurements. RESULTS: The reconstructed activity distribution using the TX system for AC showed similar results compared to the reference (<5% difference in hot regions) and outperformed the MR-based methods as implemented in the PET/MRI system (<10% difference in hot regions). However, the additional hardware of the TX system adds complexity to the acquisition process. CONCLUSION: Our porcine study demonstrates the feasibility of post-injection transmission scans using the developed TX system in a clinical setting. This makes it a useful tool for PET/MRI in cases where transmission information is needed for AC. Potential applications are studies using larger animals where state-of-the-art atlas-based or artificial intelligence AC methods are not available.

PURPOSE: This study's objective was the comparison of external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) and I­125 seed brachytherapy regarding clinical outcome and development of side effects. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In all, 462 localized intermediate-risk prostate cancer patients treated between 2000 and 2019 at our department using either I­125 seed brachytherapy or EBRT with a dose of 74 or 78 Gy were included: 297 patients were treated with EBRT and 165 with seeds. Biochemical no evidence of disease (bNED) rates according to Phoenix definition as well as late gastrointestinal and urogenital side effects (EORTC/RTOG) were assessed. RESULTS: Patients were followed up yearly with a median follow-up of 54 (3-192) months. Observed bNED rates for 74 Gy, 78 Gy and seeds were 87, 92, and 88% after 5 years and 71, 85, and 76% after 9 years, respectively. No significant differences were found comparing seeds with 74 Gy (p = 0.81) and 78 Gy (p = 0.19), as well as between 74 and 78 Gy (p = 0.32). Concerning gastrointestinal side effects, EBRT showed significantly higher rates of RTOG grade ≥ 2 toxicity compared to seeds, but at no point of the follow-up more than 10% of all patients. However, genitourinary side effects were significantly more prevalent in patients treated with seeds, with 33% RTOG grade ≥ 2 toxicity 12 months after treatment. Nevertheless, both types of side effects decreased over time. CONCLUSION: Favorable intermediate-risk prostate cancer patients can be treated either by external beam radiotherapy (74/78 Gy) or permanent interstitial seed brachytherapy.

Dupilumab is a monoclonal antibody against the IL-4 receptor alpha which has shown efficacy in T2 high severe asthmatics in phase 3 randomized controlled trials. The purpose of this real-life study is to demonstrate the real-life effectiveness of dupilumab in Austrian severe asthma patients. We retrospectively analyzed all patients receiving dupilumab at our severe asthma clinic. Thirteen patients have so far received dupilumab at our center. The primary outcome, asthma control questionnaire 6-item scale at 2 weeks, improved by 0.57 points (p = .014), which is statistically and clinically significant. Similarly, the asthma control test at 4 weeks improved by 3.91 points (p = .024), also statistically and clinically significant. Improvements in forced expiratory volume in 1 s at 2 weeks were neither statistically, nor clinically significant. Improvements at 4 weeks (+220 ml, p = .041), and 3 months (+229 ml, p = .006), were statistically significant and clinically borderline significant. No severe adverse events or hypereosinophilia were observed. No adverse events led to treatment discontinuation. Most patients (85%) had previously received monoclonal antibody treatment for severe asthma. Previous monoclonal antibody treatment had been discontinued in these patients due to a lack of clinical response. Dupilumab is effective and safe in Austrian real-life severe asthmatics. It provides a possible treatment strategy for T2 high severe asthmatics who do not qualify for anti-immunoglobulin E or anti-IL5/IL5R monoclonal antibody treatments or do not adequately respond to these.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence of the efficacy of single-inhaler triple therapy in COPD patients inferred from RCTs has not been assessed in a real-world setting in Austria. In this non-interventional study (NIS) tolerability and effectiveness of extrafine beclometasone-dipropionate, formoterol-fumarate and glycopyrronium (Trimbow® 87/5/9 µg) was evaluated in COPD patients. METHODS: A prospective NIS was conducted over 52 weeks in 24 sites in Austria. Eligible COPD patients had an indication for treatment with single-inhaler BDP/FF/G. In this study tolerability, lung function, exacerbation rate, symptom scores and CAT scores were recorded. RESULTS: 265 patients with moderate to very severe airflow limitation (GOLD Grade 2-4: 96.2%) and persistent symptoms (GOLD B: 62.3%, GOLD D: 34%) according to the 2018 GOLD Report were included. After 52 weeks, a significant improvement was detected in lung function (FEV1, FEV1% predicted and FVC; p < 0.001) and symptoms (cough, sputum and shortness of breath; p < 0.001). A clinically relevant improvement in CAT score observed at 12 weeks persisted after 52 weeks in GOLD B and GOLD D patients (p < 0.001), paralleled by a significant reduction of moderate and severe exacerbations by 57.4% and 27.3%, respectively (p < 0.001). After 52 weeks, 93.7% of the patients continued the treatment. Of 21 adverse events reported 16 were non-serious, five were serious, none were deemed drug related. CONCLUSIONS: The present results support the tolerability and effectiveness of extrafine BDP/FF/G in COPD patients in a real-world setting, showing an improvement in lung function, symptom control and a significant reduction in exacerbations.

INTRODUCTION: Only little is known about COVID-19 in patients with asthma. There is no data on COVID-19 in patients with severe asthma or patients with asthma who are treated with monoclonal antibodies. CASE STUDY: Here, we present the case of a severe eosinophilic asthmatic in whom benralizumab treatment, an anti-IL-5R monoclonal antibody, was initiated 2 years ago. Prior to benralizumab treatment, every viral infection had resulted in a prolonged course of oral corticosteroids (OCS). Since initiation of benralizumab, the patient has had good asthma control. Mid-March 2020, the patient developed high fever. RESULTS: A SARS-CoV-2-PCR (nasopharyngeal swab) was positive. The patient's symptoms subsided after few days. No OCS was needed. The asthma control questionnaire 6-item scale worsened moderately in the week of the infection and returned to normal levels thereafter. The asthma control test, measuring longer term asthma control, showed no decline. CONCLUSION: The course of COVID-19 was very mild in this particular patient with severe eosinophilic asthma. So far, there is no evidence that would suggest a more severe course of COVID-19 in patients with asthma. It is worth noting, that prior to the initiation of benralizumab this patient had multiple exacerbations per year triggered by viral infections (4/year), which all required OCS. Whilst only anecdotal, this case study provides the first evidence to support the current recommendation of continuing monoclonal antibodies in patients with severe asthma during the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: A significant number of patients with moderate asthma remain symptomatic despite treatment with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). These patients do not yet meet the criteria for oral corticosteroids (OCS) and monoclonal antibodies. The new anti-chemokine oral drug XC8 could represent an alternative treatment option for these patients. The objective of this trial was to evaluate the effect of different doses of the XC8 in patients with partly controlled asthma in a phase 2a clinical trial. METHODS: A double-blind, parallel-group, randomized, multicenter, phase 2a trial was conducted at 12 sites in Russia. Patients with asthma were randomized into four groups (n = 30 each) to receive XC8 at 2 mg, 10 mg, 100 mg or placebo once-daily for 12 weeks in addition to low-dose ICS with or without LABA. Efficacy and safety parameters were evaluated at weeks 0, 2, 6, and 12. RESULTS: No statistically significant difference between the treatment arms in the number of patients with adverse events was observed. The primary endpoint, improvement of forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) % predicted over 12 weeks compared to placebo, was not statistically significant. The treatment of patients with XC8 (100 mg) resulted in statistically and clinically significant improvements in FEV1 compared to baseline (7.40% predicted, p < 0.001). Patients with elevated peripheral blood eosinophil count (PBEC, > 300 cells/µl) or serum interferon-γ (IFN-γ) level (> 100 pg/mL) treated with XC8 (100 mg) achieved a statistically significant improvement in FEV1 (11.33% predicted or 8.69% predicted, respectively, p < 0.05) as compared to the baseline versus the placebo. The strongest effect was observed in patients with both high PBEC and IFN-γ level. Pharmacodynamic engagement was demonstrated through the reduction of serum levels of C-C motif ligand 2 (CCL2) and C-X-C motif chemokine 10 (CXCL10). Treatment with XC8 (100 mg) alleviated resistance to maintenance ICS therapy in patients with elevated IFN-γ level. CONCLUSIONS: Given the high safety, oral route of administration, and efficacy, XC8 may provide a promising treatment option for patients with mild-to-moderate asthma. Scientific Members of the Austrian Society of Pneumology describe the expected development in respiratory health and provide guidance towards patient-oriented and cost-efficient respiratory care in Austria.Methods: In November 2017, respiratory care providers (physicians, nurses, physiotherapists) together with patient's advocacy groups and experts in health development, collaborated in workshops on: respiratory health and the environment, bronchial asthma and allergy, COPD, pediatric respiratory disease, respiratory infections, sleep disorders, interventional pneumology, thoracic oncology and orphan diseases.Results: Respiratory disease is extremely prevalent and driven by ill-health behavior, i.e. cigarette smoking, over-eating and physical inactivity. For the majority of respiratory diseases increased prevalence, but decreased hospitalizations are expected.The following measures should be implemented to deal with future challenges:1. Screening and case-finding should be implemented for lung cancer and COPD.2. E-health solutions (telemedicine, personal apps) should be used to facilitate patient management.3. Regional differences in respiratory care should be reduced through E­health and harmonization of health insurance benefits across Austria.4. Patient education and awareness, to reduce respiratory health illiteracy should be increased, which is essential for sleep disorders but relevant also for other respiratory diseases.5. Respiratory care should be inter-professional, provided via disease-specific boards beyond lung cancer (for ILDs, sleep, allergy)6. Programs for outpatient's pulmonary rehabilitation can have a major impact on respiratory health.7. Increased understanding of molecular pathways will drive personalized medicine, targeted therapy (for asthma, lung cancer) and subsequently health care costs.

BACKGROUND: Mepolizumab was effective in several randomized clinical trials (RCTs) in patients with severe eosinophilic asthma, but evidence for symptom control in a real-world population is scarce. OBJECTIVE: To assess asthma symptom control, lung function, use of oral corticosteroids, and biomarkers after mepolizumab initiation in real-world clinical practice. METHODS: Thirty-five adult patients with severe eosinophilic asthma and inadequate asthma symptom control, including former smokers and patients with cardiac disease, were enrolled in a prospective single-arm real-world study. Asthma control tests (ACT), exacerbations, spirometry (pre-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 s [FEV1]), and oral corticosteroid doses were documented. Further assessments included peripheral blood eosinophil counts and adverse events. RESULTS: After mepolizumab initiation asthma symptom control was significantly improved with the median ACT score of 12.5 at baseline (interquartile range [IQR ]10.5-19.5) rising to 19 (15-22.5) after 4 weeks. The improvement was maintained throughout the observation period of 20 weeks. Likewise, exacerbations were reduced. After 8 weeks of mepolizumab daily OCS doses were reduced from 6.25 mg daily (0-20) at baseline to 2.5 mg daily (0-11.9) at week 8 (P < 0.001). FEV1 remained generally unchanged during the course of the study. Eosinophil counts rapidly declined and remained at a low level during the observation period. No new safety signals were observed in this study. CONCLUSION: Mepolizumab improved asthma symptom control and had a steroid-sparing effect. Efficacy in this real-world study was comparable to RCTs, despite a history of smoking and comorbidities in many of the patients included.
